Morning watch 6-2-11

By Rochester falcon watcher MAK

Hi folks! Just a brief word about last nights watch at KP. As CarolP stated in her report there wasn’t much action, mostly Unity just perching and holding on in the wind to her spot on the tall still,

I had gone there to show any watchers interested the last of Beauty and Archers’ last egg that I found on the sidewalk below Times Square last Saturday morning. The DEC wants it and so I will be dropping it off at their location in Avon this week.

This morning when I arrived downtown Beauty was on the southeast  ledge of the Times Square building one level above the nestbox.

I watched the wind blow her feathers in her face for over an hour when she fixed her eyes on 2 little birdies hanging out around the nestbox. She took a shot at them and missed. The Beautyful one then flew up to the deck next to the main camera eventually going into the scrape. My camera battery quit on me so I only have the 4 pics today.

As I was waiting for her to come back out of the nestbox DebbieH stopped by on her way to work and I also saw Kelly walk by on her way to work. Soon after I spotted Beauty flying above the Wilder building. No wing flapping involved for she was gliding gracefully on the strong winds and drifted over me on Aqueduct St. and then high above the OCSR  disappearing behind it. Everyone should have a chance to see a Peregrine Falcon on the wing! Have a great day! 🙂

Falcon Watch Evening – 6/1/11 – The Winds, They Were a Blow’n

Wednesday, June 1st, 2011

From Rochester Falcon Watcher Carol P.
Usually the Falcons can’t resist high winds, but there wasn’t much flying while we were there. It was warm and very windy. Watchers Kathy O, MAK, Dana, Dan and Carol P, gathered at the Kodak Park parking lot. I arrived at about 6:30 pm. We set-up our chairs on the lawn and looked for our Peregrines.
We started with none and then Unity flew in from the east, landing on the tall still.
After awhile, at 7:30 pm, Archer zoomed in and directly into the scrape. Unity landed on the I-beam in front of it.
There wasn’t too much flying and when I left at 8:40 pm, Archer and Unity had settled down to some serious preening and stretching and scratching side-by-side on two different stills. Larry O tweeted me that he had Beauty at the Times Square Nest Box.
A beautiful evening for a Falcon Watch, good company and all three Rochester Falcons accounted for. That’s the best!

Today I first found Beauty on the 2nd arm of the Frontier Communications Tower. She was looking where else…north toward Kodak Park.

Soon after she flew off  to the Times Square building when I arrived she was on top of the main camera.

Beauty didn’t stay there for long and flew off giving me a nice show high above Times Square. When she was through she landed under the northeast wing . I had mistakenly tweeted southeast. OOPS!

Next Beauty made a flight  around the area and went to the nestbox. I could hear echupping and the next thing I knew Archer flew into view and very fast departed flying north behind the Crossroads building. He returned a couple minutes later with prey landed under the southeast wing and started plucking the feathers away. I could see the top part of Beauty up on the deck as she waited for her breakfast to be prepared.

I took video of him at this point and then somehow I hit the button and it stopped taping. When I resumed Beauty had already flown up there and the next video was of her after she grabbed it from him. Links will be at the end of this report as they are uploading right now. After Beauty took the prey Archer flew left and flew north. She began eating.

A fan of our falcons named Mary whom I met one other morning stopped by to chat and she had 2 other people with her that also watch on the forum. Forgive me for not remembering their names but they all work in the Thomson Reuters building. When the Beautyful one was done eating she flew down to the nestbox once again making quite a racket. Archer flew into view and circled Times Square before exiting once more. Beauty left and returned giving me another great aerial display high above the Wilder building out over the river and above the Times Square building before she landed under the southeast wing again.

DebbieH stopped by to get the scoop and after she left for work I stayed with Beauty until it was time to go home for breakfast. What a fantastic watch I had this morning . 🙂
