Two reports now in from Bruce who was out to several sites yesterday. Skye was hanging out on the Harlequin building at the Duncan Mill Road nest site and one of the adults at the Yellow Pages nest site was in the old nest ledge hanging out. Thanks so much for the updates Bruce!

There's been no cam running at Quest's site for at least a couple weeks now. Today I read on the CPF site that Donna is gone from Harlequin so I wonder if this is going to impact the camera running anymore.  I've asked CPF on their FB page plus posted questions about it under comments on the Harlequin blog with no answers.  Anyone know anything about it?

Like you I was surprised to read she was gone.  I didn't know her but she was a great supporter of CPF and I've heard nothing but nice things about her.

Just googled her - she retired in December.  Here is an article I found about it and they mention CPF so maybe she'll become more involved - talons crossed.

Thanks, Carly.  Happy retirement to Donna!  Hope the new guy continues with the cam...I'm sure it's not a priority though.

I keep wondering how Kendal is doing. Does anyone have any updates on his progress?

Just lit some candles for him.

Nice pics Alison, Kendal seems to be healing well but not well enough to fend for himself against another falcon. He's flying good but needs more exercise. Will be a while before we know for sure.

Is this from the old update you posted quite a while ago or a recent update?

It's from a few weeks ago....yes. I know he's flying very well, which is why they put him in a bigger flight cage! I'll see if I can find out more.

Here's Quest's labor video.  I just uploaded it (3:10pm) and it is in the process of getting lightened so hopefully we can see the egg better once she lays it.  But you can see her pushing and the final stand after last push to allow egg to dry

Title: Re: Quest (2008) and Skye - Toronto/Don Mills
Post by: NCAFalcons on 02-Apr-14, 03:53:14 PM
Because of the shadows/lighting, I can't get the right combo of lighting, contrast, color and saturation to make it show up better.  Around 3 minutes in video, she stands up for the final time and I'm pretty sure the egg is visible at that time.  She takes really deep pushes and then lifts between pushes.  Some just stay low the entire time.  I had posted here and on BCAW that she was in labor, but then deleted my post because I wasn't sure, especially since I couldn't see an egg and her pushing technique.

Anyway, it's here. Sorry I couldn't get the picture any better for you guys.

First Egg of 2014!
It looks as if Quest and Skye are officially a couple. Quest laid her first egg of 2014 on Wednesday, April 2nd at 2:49 pm. Typically, a Peregrine falcon lays eggs every 48 hours and can lay as many as six. Last year Quest and Kendal had four eggs, which all hatched, so we can likely expect a few more. Six-year-old Quest is an experienced parent—she had her first hatchling, Harlequin, in 2011—but this is a three-year-old Skye’s first crack at fatherhood. Hopefully, he proves to be as capable a provider as Kendal.

Speaking of Kendal, everyone will remember that he was injured in a severe storm last July. After initially being cared for by the Canadian Wildlife Centre and Canadian Peregrine Foundation, Kendal is still working his way back from a fractured coracoid that prevents him from fully extending his wing at the Owl Foundation—a registered Canadian charitable organization in the Niagara Peninsula near St. Catherines, Ontario. We’ll share news on Kendal as we receive it.

In the meantime, stay tuned for more eggs, more news and more excitement….

Harlequin encourages anyone who wishes to learn more about peregrines, pledge support or discover what they can do to help this threatened species to visit the Canadian Peregrine Foundation at www.peregrine-foundation.ca (http://www.peregrine-foundation.ca)

random thought - Skye, of course, was also the name of the M-K offspring that got a transmitter -- what, in 2005?  funny coincidence.

There are three now.  Can't get a good scap as they are wiggling so much and Skye seems to be intrigued and is blocking my view half the time.

Well I finally got three heads clearly in view and got a screen shot of my post instead and now she's back on them.   :paperbag:

Several of us are thinking we may have had a fourth hatch here but it’s hard to confirm at this point.   Soon as you think you see a fourth head, another one falls in for the block!  If anyone can get a clear screen capture, send it on in to us!

Jury is still out, but I suspect there are 4. I got there late for the feeding and only got a few frames, but it looks like there are 3 standing and one laying down in front...I did see the one in front pick its head up when the others ducked.

!!! Three Hatches for RM & Tiago
May 13, 2014 - Toronto - Sheraton Centre
Kathy Reports:

It’s been a challenge trying to count heads here due to the location the falcons chose, good protection for them but hard for us to see.

Our good friend Kitty at Rfalcon managed to capture this endearing photo of mom feeding 3 little ones.  Dad was also in the photo however due to the site cutting off the edges I had to crop him out so you could see the three little heads!

Thank you Kitty and to all those who watch this site so faithfully!

And also added Don Mills of course, had to crop Tiago out - for some reason the uploader is cutting off an inch around the edges if you upload it full size.

!!! Screen Capture of Four Little Ones!!
May 13, 2014 - Toronto - Don Mills
Kathy Reports:

Kitty over at Rfalcon, the Rochester Falcon forum, captured this screen shot of a feeding and you can see 3 heads up for the meal and one little one laying down to the side.  I put little pen marks there to point them out.

In another day or so they’ll all be bigger and stronger and we should be able to get sharper photos of them!

To everyone watching the Duncan Mill Rd. falcon family.

Banding day for the chicks is set for May 28th at 10:00 AM at the Harlequin office. Should be fun to watch as sky the new father might just give our volunteer rock climber something to remember him by. Keep an eye on the web cam May 28th.

Here's the link for the rest of the Harlequin banding event-Skye, brother of Dot.Ca shows up at the end of the events with a full crop so I guess we know what he was doing the rest of the time. lol Much like his brother in that category (food) also with a very white chest and distinct heart shape on his auricular patch.

I will be posting pics from the Etobicoke/Sunlife Centre banding event where O'Connor and Jack (father of Skye and Dot.Ca) reside a bit later. Doing my best to take care of business and get these pics posted while getting other stuff done!  ;D

!!! Banding Day - 3 new hatchlings, 2 males and 2 females!
May 28, 2014 - Toronto - Don Mills
Marion Nash Reports:

Banding Day - May 28th - 2014
We would like to thank Harlequin once again for hosting the banding event this year of the young peregrine chicks produced at 220 Duncan Mill Rd nest site and all of their incredible support to both the CPF and the peregrines. This year we were joined by students from Bayview Glen School who were so excited to see the banding and meet the little young peregrine hatchlings.
A huge thank you to John Millar for going to the ledge to do the extraction (and return them), and to Donna and Christine for all of their efforts behind the scenes organizing. A big thank you to the 220 Duncan Mills tenants and board of directors for their support and allowing us to invade their facilities once again.
A huge thank you to Mark from the Aurora district of the MNR for coming in to band the hatchlings again this year.
There were 4 healthy babies all weighing in at a very healthy weight.

655 grams female 18 days old named Stormy
465 grams male 17 days old named Cosmo
710 grams female 18 days old named Rainbow-Dash
510 grams male 18 days old named Hayes

!!! Little Cosmo and sibling gets blown off the ledge! Cosmo comes to the ground!!
June 17, 2014 - Toronto - Don Mills
Mark Nash Reports:

June 17th - 2014
Day two on the fledge watch.
For the most parts, I’m told that the large part of the day was a typical day on the fledge watch for the volunteers, much like watching paint dry. But, things can change very quickly as we all know, and that’s just what happened. With Environment Canada issuing severe thunderstorm warnings, heavy rain warnings with risk of flooding, high winds and risk of tornados, things were about to change for most of Ontario very very quickly!

Well, the weather man got it bang-on right this time, as that’s just what happened in Toronto (and many other parts of Ontario)! Just after 5 pm, the storm cells barrelled in and swept through southern Ontario.

With calls streaming in on my cell phone from Rudy in Kitchener Ontario on the Kitchener Waterloo peregrine fledge watch to Tracy out in Etobicoke at the Bloor & Islington peregrine fledge watch to Helena, Donna and Bob out at the Duncan Mills fledge watch, the severe weather caused all kinds of problems for both watchers and fledglings!!

The high winds swept in with torrential rain and heavy downpours that added to the challenges as two of the young Duncan Mills hatchlings ended up coming off the nest ledge!

Thank goodness to the quick response of the Duncan Mills fledge watch team as Little Cosmo - (yellow tape) was influenced by the severe weather and ended up on the ground out in front of the nest ledge at the base of the nest building moments before the torrential rain started.

A second sibling was also influenced by the gusty high winds and also ended up out of the nest ledge. It managed to grab hold of the concrete wall face and luckily ended up on a ledge directly below the nest ledge. * see photo attached.

Ping, one of the new fledge watchers jumped into action along with several other members of the fledge watch team managed to scoop up little Cosmo before he even realized what had happened! Bob later transferred him to a larger rescue carrier for safe keeping until I arrived on site to examine him and assess the situation.

As quick as the extreme weather moved in, it departed just a quickly, but only after leaving the GTA battered with downed trees, power outages, damaged buildings and cars as a result of blowing mail boxes and other debris having been blown around and flooding all over the city. By 7:00pm, the bad weather was all over (at least for us), and the dark clouds were quickly replaced with white fluffy clouds and much clearer skies.

Cosmo was carefully examined to ensure that he hadn’t suffered any injuries or trauma as a result of his premature departure and fall from the nest ledge, * see photos attached.

Based on the much improved weather conditions, clearing skies and his very healthy condition, I made the decision to get him back to the upper roof top of the nest building and to his parents care before darkness.

Cosmo was successfully released back to the nest building roof top without incident by 8pm. The release was supervised by Quest - (his mom) who was quick to fly in to voice her opinion of my presence on the rooftop during Cosmo’s release. By 9:30pm as darkness closed in, all three hatchlings were in view and knowing that little Cosmo was on the lower upper roof elevation surrounded by a four feet retaining wall, all was well and we closed the fledge watch down for the evening.

A huge thank you to the Berkley building management group and security for both assisting and facilitating the rescue and release this evening!!

Stay tuned, as its only just begun…………

!! Fledge Watch day 3,, - Cosmo safe on the roof and little brother Hayes looses another floor!
June 18, 2014 - Toronto - Don Mills

Mark Nash Reports:

Wednesday June 18th - 2014
Quickly update as I was not here today, but received the updated highlights from Marion tonight. Sadly, I was not able to pick Marion up until after 11pm this evening as I was called to downtown Toronto after work tonight to assist Linda in the release of two of her fledglings that were rescued from the busy Toronto downtown sidewalks this morning from the Toronto Sheraton Hotel nest site. A long day again for all of us. A successful release by the way, with all four of the Toronto Sheraton hatchlings back on their nest ledge!

As for Little Cosmo at the Duncan Mills nest site, he was still on the lower roof top elevation by dark this evening and doing just fine. While he can’t be seen due to the high retaining wall that surrounds this lower roof elevation, Quest did come in with food on at least two occasions today and fed him, (food in, parent stays on the same room elevation for an extended period of time, then reappears without a full crop herself and no food in hand). Either Quest is suddenly shy about being seen eating in public, or she’s taking food into Cosmo :-) Quest also spent time throughout the day keeping a close eye on Cosmo from the same roof retaining wall.

Little Hayes lost yet another floor of height while involved in all of his ledge-hopping today, and despite both Sky’s and Quests teasing with food and screaming at him throughout the day, Hayes refused to fly,,, (preferring to run and ledge hop all day). As a result, Hayes was not fed today by either parent.

The two other siblings remained on the nest ledge all day, exercising their wings, running along the nest ledge and doing allot of resting.

By 11pm, all four hatchlings were present and accounted for.
Stay tuned……….

!!! Fledge Watch - Day 4
June 19, 2014 - Toronto - Don Mills
Mark Nash Reports:

Thursday June 19th - 2014
A good fourth day on the watch with Cosmo making seven short flights while roof-topping chasing his parents around for food, and Little Hayes finally coming to the ground, (and after a short but intense foot chase), was successfully released back to the nest building roof top.

The other two young hatchlings still remain lounging around on the nest ledge by the end of the day.

!!! Fledge Watch - Day 4
June 19, 2014 - Toronto - Don Mills

Mark Nash Reports:

Thursday June 19th - 2014
A good fourth day on the Duncan Mills fledge watch with little Cosmo finally being located on the east upper roof elevation of 240 Duncan Mill Road and made seven short flights while chasing his parents around for food, and Little Hayes finally coming to the ground, (and after a short but intense foot chase around both buildings - on both sides of the street), was successfully scooped-up and later released back to the nest building roof top.

The other two Duncan Mills hatchlings still remain lounging around on the nest ledge by the end of the day.

By 11am, the day was not sounding so good as the calls came in from two other fledge watch groups with some very sad news of mortalities. Rob from the Etobicoke fledge watch team reported that one of their young fledglings had slammed into the glass windows of one of the office towers and was killed on impact.

Tony from the Sun Life Kitchener Waterloo fledge watch team called shortly after Rob to report that one of their young fledglings had also flown into the glass windows of the office tower and also died on impact as a result of that collision. By early afternoon, the third bad news call came in from Tony at the Kitchener Waterloo fledge watch team explaining that a second KW fledgling had just been killed as a result of an impact with a building.

For us here at the Duncan Mills fledge watch, the news was, thank-goodness much better, but I must admit, I was hesitant to answer the next 14 calls that came in over the balance of the day.

Over the course of the day, little Hayes stumbled off the ledge yet again and fluttered down to a lower window ledge elevation (now only two stories from the ground) as he continued to ledge hop from one end of the building to the other while screaming most of the day at his parents for attention and food. Several of the 220 tenants came across the street to speak with us asking if there was anything that they could do for him as his screaming was almost unbearable to listen to for many of the occupants inside the building.

I gotta admit, his constant whaling throughout the day was quite un-nerving and you couldn’t help but feel sorry for the little guy.

Quest on the other hand was , spent a large part of her afternoon ignoring him, and actually spent a large part of her afternoon lounging around on the nest ledge with the Stormy and Rainbow on the nest ledge. She actually spent several hours laying down in front of the nest box with them in quite a heart warming family session of touching beaks with each other.

Sky, (the resident adult male) on the other hand, spent most of his afternoon in the shade in typical peregrine fashion, on the top of the window sil under the roof overhang on the corner of the 240 Duncan Mill road building.

By early evening,, around 8pm- (just around the falcon follies time when peregrine usually get frisky and start flying again), all of the action took place. Little Hayes finally came down to the ground and only after several foot chases and three ground rescue attempts later, was finally scooped up from the ground in the carrier safe and sound.

Little Cosmo was finally located on the upper roof elevation on the east side of 240 Duncan Mill Road after not being seen for almost two days since his release back to the 220 nest building roof top.

Cosmo was the super star of the day, as he made several very strong flights (actually eight flights) from the roof tops of 220, 240, 225 and back again while chasing both his parents around for food. He was finally rewarded and fed by Quest on the roof top of 225.

Sky did bring in several pigeons today and Quest quickly snatched his food deliveries and fed the two nest box hatchlings during the falcon follies period. Little Hayes was the only one that didn’t get food today. As a matter of fact, Hayes didn’t get food yesterday as well but not to be worried, as he is still dealing with allot of baby fat, clearly evident after the physical examination I completed prior to his release back to the roof this evening.

Stay tuned…………..

I so look forward to our own "falcon follies".   ;)

Glad to hear that Quest and Skye's fledges are doing good so far.  I had to smile when I read this in Mark's report, "Little Hayes finally coming to the ground, (and after a short but intense foot chase around both buildings - on both sides of the street), was successfully scooped-up and later released back to the nest building roof top", just imagining Mark and the other volunteers chasing Hayes around on foot.

We had a similar "almost rescue" with his mom Quest who came to ground on her fledge day.  She was able to get herself up to a low building and all was good after that.

Thanks for posting the daily reports from our friends up north Kris, Donna and Ei!

Stormy slips, falls, flies too low!!
June 20, 2014 - Toronto - Don Mills

Cathy Kerr Reports:

Never a dull day at Harlequin it seems!!!  Sue reported an exciting morning with Hayes having his first flight over to the top of 240 Duncanmill!  Way to go Hayes!!  And Cosmo returned home to the nest ledge–quite a feat!!  And there they remained for most of the afternoon with Quest hanging out with the girls and Cosmo– having afternoon naps in, on and in front of the nest box! Then they woke up!  Hayes flew to Harlequin’s top ledge, then over to the roof of the nest building.  He stayed there awhile but flew back over to 240 where he stayed and was there when we left for the night!

Now the other three were preening, wingersizing, enjoying the sun.  While Cosmo & Rainbow were doing some lovely beaking, Stormy decided to do some wingersizing and slipped off the ledge!!  She fell a few stories, then flew, very low to the building east of Harlequin where she landed on their driveway, not knowing what the heck had happened I’m sure!  We found her and after a failed attempt at grabbing her, she flew, so low she passed within a hair of my ankle, back towards the nest building only to land outside the nest on the road!!  To our horror I must add!  Our team of rescuers raced out to stop traffic and try and get her, but she would have none of it!! Back she flew, past us, to land right beside the road in front of 240.  We stopped a bus(tho to be fair he/she was slowing down–probably wondering what the heck a bunch of people were doing running down the road!!  what a sight we must of been!!) and finally, Stormy was scooped up, so to speak, by Bonnie!   Stormy was deposited in a crate and safely tucked away with Sam in the Harlequin building until she could be put back up on the roof of the nest building by Mark at dark.

Thanks to all our team, Bonnie, Bob, Ping, Madison & Jessica for an exciting rescue!!

!!! Young fledgling takes up some new hobbies :-)
June 21, 2014 - Toronto - Don Mills

Mark Nash Reports:

June 21st - 2014
Thank goodness its the weekend and the rally race they we usually see going on out on Duncan Mills road has ceased for at least a few days! A very slow say - (well at least for a while) when all kayos brakes loose! It was one of those days and started with Ann arriving in the morning and not finding anyone. Then after much searching, one by one of the peregrines were located, except for one,, Rain-bow Dash!! After an extended period of a frustrating long search around all of the buildings, parking lots and rooftop leading edges, she returns to the 225 stairs and is distracted by a small noise. As she turns, guess who is stilling at waist level on the rail several feet from where Ann was standing,, no other than Rainbow Dash,,, who was standing on the metal rail throughout her entire search period, watching all along. An was able to take some great photos.

Knowing the a rescue was not possible with her camera, Ann in a defining moment umbilically detached herself from her camera,, (I wish I had been there to get that photo) :-) As she re-approached for the second time, Rainbow decided that it was time to go and took flight very low across the road (thank goodness there was no road rally races going on) and managed to gain enough altitude to land on the first floor lower overhang on the south west corner of 220. This is where Rainbow stayed until 1:30 in the afternoon after a lazzzy day of sleeping and stretching, flapping and sleeping, sleeping more, and watching all of the silly humans take her photograph. She attracted the attention of many passer-byes that dropped in throughout the morning to take her photo.

Finally, somewhere between 1pm and 1:30pm, she took flight again, and only after colliding into the windows of the pink/bronze coloured building glass on the building next to 225, she ended up on the lower balcony rail (north west corner), and eventually couldn’t keep her balance and slipped and fell down into the balcony in a flower pot filled with some long green shrubbery. Over the next 6 plus hours, Rainbow-Dash appeared to be dissecting the long green plants while watching the “other identical twin peregrine juvenile” mimic its exact moves,, :-) - her reflection in the glass!! Hilarious is an understatement!

Debbie, Sally, Kathy and myself watched spent most of our time laughing at her lack of gardening skills and dissection this poor plant while simultaneously trying to get the “other peregrine in the glass to get of her way so she could get off the balcony. Sky, her dad, dropped in and landed on the balcony rail on at least one occasion to check up her. Finally, after more than 6 hours, Rainbow finally flew up to the balcony rail and with allot of coaxing from her parents as they proceeded to feed two of the her other siblings, she took flight and ended up on the hydro wire and hydro pole across the street. After her short inspection of the hydro wires and connections, she eventually took flight and ended up on a 5 story window ledge on the west side of 240 Dncan Mill Road where she remained until we closed off the fledge watch around 9:49pm at darkness.

The other problem child, Stormy, who was rescued from the street yesterday and had to be put back to the nest building roof, spent all day on the same elevation of the nest building roof until after 7pm. An hour before the falcon follies, she made her first real flight, (and while not a good one), she flew over to the 240 building trying to make it to the upper rooftop. Sadly, she did not even come close as she struggled to get altitude, falling far short of the upper roof ledge, and ended up on the upper window ledge with a face plant into the back concrete wall. The good news, she did manage to recover and end up on the window ledge despite her “concrete work” and stayed put.

The other two fledglings, Hayes and Cosmo were flying from roof top to roof top all day and all stayed high!! They were the ones that got most of the food all day,, (and each got food several times as they chased their parents around from roof top to roof top).

By the end of the fledge watch shift, Stormy has taken her third flight - (which no-one actually saw), and was spotted on a ledge directly above the front entrance of the pink/bronze coloured building next to 225 Duncan Mill Road.

At Dark when Bob and I finally departed, all four fledglings were accounted for and in view.
Stay tuned………

An incomplete report...cutting out the Canada Square section...but I think the pictures speak for themselves...

!!! Another day to remember. Some sad news and some good news!
June 22, 2014 - Toronto - Don Mills
Mark Nash Reports:

...Back at Duncan Mills nest site, the fledge watch team really rallied together as they once again were on site throughout the day to be therefor their peregrines. With Bob arriving around 5:30am in the morning to focus his attention on little Stormy who was left the night before perched very low on a lower ledge elevation just over the entrance of 255 Duncan Mill. He found the fledgling lower yet again, on the lip of the glass overhead canopy only several feet from the front ground at the front entrance.

Over the course of the early part of the morning, he was joined by Sally, Cathy, Luci and Richard and Debbie, followed by Tracy and I think Bonny and her husband. When I arrived, they were all poised out on Duncan Mill waiting to spring in action for little Stormy to come to the ground. By the time I arrived in the later afternoon, there was a full fledge watch team pretty much prepared to deal with anything!!!

Throughout the morning and afternoon, the other three fledglings were observed in several short flights from various roof tops to roof tops doing not too bad. Although terrible landings for the most parts, they all were holding their altitudes and staying off the ground!

By 7pm, it was quite evident that

!!! Cosmo sucessfully released back to his parents. 4 fledglings still all going strong - (well sort of).
June 23, 2014 - Toronto - Don Mills
Mark Nash Reports:

June 23rd - 2014
Last nights adventures and Cosmos collision is a grim reminder that although it would appear that the fledglings are now able to hold their altitude and stay off the ground, they are still immature inexperienced juveniles with absolutely no life skills. They are solely dependant on their adult parents for food, protection and support for the next 30 to 90 days. They are still being beak fed by Quest a it will take weeks for some of the fledglings to even figure out that its actually other birds that they been eating, let alone having no clue as to how these birds actually end up on the diner table.

While it may also appear that can all now fly, (well, sort of) :-) , like most young, they is still allot of opportunity for them to get into all kinds of trouble as they investigate their new world. We equate this period as the young 16 year old, one that has just got their drivers licence, and been given the keys to the family car for the very first time. Only in this case, the family car is a Ferrari!!! Speed does kill!!!

Remembering that these young fledgling peregrine falcons are still learning to fly,, with allot of learning to coordinate their tails and wings for elevation and direction, and equally as important, the tail and wing flare to slow down and break!! Landings are a real skill that is only mastered with lots and lots of practice, and as many of you have already observed, lots of bumps and grinds throughout the learning period.

The big difference with these birds compared to all others, is the speed. Peregrines are able to build up incredible speed almost from the get-go and its the speed along with the inexperience that usually leads to their many injuries and mortality. This in addition to having no life skills or fears, and we find them getting trapped behind glass balcony’s unable to understand why they can’t escape through the glass and get back into the air.

We rescue many fledglings each year that have been trapped behind balcony’s, pulled them out of chimneys, air conditioning chiller units and pools, air ducts, out of mechanical rooms of hi-rise buildings, garbage dumpsters, and a host of other things that get trapped in, some times weeks after they are actually flighted. And in Cosmo’s case, unconscious from the ground after colliding with windows.

So, the day at the Duncan Mills nest site was for the most parts uneventful today. Actually really boring with absolutely no activity for most of the day. Quest and Sky were inactive roosting on various elevations on 240 Duncan Mill building, with the fledglings lounging around on the upper roof of same all day! Very few flights and no teasing by the adults.

Sue joined me for a couple of hours today and was able to help keep me stay awake. Oh my goodness, what a boring slow day indeed,, (although very welcomed, as I was able to do some necessary recharging of my own batteries, relax and de-stress,, and I actually took a minute to eat). I’ve forgotten that you can actually eat during the daylight hours! Eating is good!!

With the support of Bob, Sally and Don, little Cosmo was examined once again before his release. Some great photos were taken by Sally with her camera phone of the examination. A feisty attitude indeed, with lots of energy and an aggressive fighting sprit! Rather nasty as a matter of fact, completely unappreciative of all of our efforts to care for him. :-) This is such a thankless job as far as the peregrines are concerned. lol

Cosmo was again re-hydrated with some water prior to his release and cleared for release.

With Bob, Sally and Don in position at the ground level with towels and a two way radio in hand, I attended the nest building roof top and Cosmo was successfully released without innocent. See photos at roof.

That's #7 since last week - Toronto no doubt retains the title of highest killer of birds due to glass buildings.  So many senseless, needless losses.  We brought them back from the brink so they could hit the glass and die  :(

Is it true that a lot of the building owners in Toronto don't want to use the Flap program? Too expensive, I guess. If they just did the upper half of the windows, it would  help greatly! This is so hard to swallow! I'm so sorry Carly! Just not fair!!

And the rest of the rescue net story from Sunday...

By 7pm, it was quite evident that little Stormy was simply not motivated to take flight and both Quest and Sky were not giving her any incentive to get back to a safe altitude. Given the deadness of the traffic and the available fledge watch volunteers on hand, the decision was made to capture Stormy up while we had opportunity. Knowing that the automobile traffic will be back to the usually road-rally race status tomorrow morning as everyone rushes into work Monday morning, and the huge volume of people that will be coming into this building, this was an ideal safe time to capture her-up and get her back to a safe elevation on top of the nest building roof. Bob went home to get a step ladder and an incredible long extendable painters pole, and Tracy went to her vehicle to get one of the rescue nets. With the net attached to the painters pole and the fledge watch team positioned on both sides of the street to the east and west of the front entrance in anticipation that we may not be able to get her in the net and she if she came to the ground, we were all ready.
With the ladder in position only feet below her, and the super-doper net in hand, I took the first step onto the ladder, and before I cold even look up, she took flight. We watcher fly low around the west site of 255, into the back parking lot of 225 where she was able to get enough air and altitude to make a landing on the top elevation of the above ground parking lot at the rear of 225 Duncan Mill road lot. Yaaah!! At least now she has some elevation and away from traffic!

Less than 30 minutes later, and with Quest and Sky (her parents) in flight offering some motivation, Stormy flew again, this time catching some moving air and gained enough altitude to eventually land on the upper rooftop of 240 Duncan Mill road where she joined her siblings! A very good long flight indeed!!!

You could have probably heard the cheering from all of us several blocks away!

By 8:30 pm, the falcon follies were in full swing with both resident adults flying around teasing the fledglings with food and it was chaos in the streets again trying to keep track of the four, no, six peregrines bolting and flying all over the place from rooftop to rooftop, with fledglings chasing the adults, the adults teasing with food, it was incredible.

By 9:10pm all had settled, several fledglings had been fed and darkness was closing in and pretty much everyone settled down for the evening and everything got really quiet. Most of the fledge watch team departed for home after a very long day in the streets. By 9:20pm, with Sally, Don, Sue and myself saying our good-byes, there was one last flight.

Suddenly, the quiet silence was disrupted with a loud thump and our attention and eyes were each drawn overhead to the 7th floor window of 225 directly above our heads. A spread-eagle like peregrine falcon juvenile floated spiraling down thumping on the concrete literally three feet from where we all sitting. At this very same time, Sue yelled out, oh my god, it just hit the window!

It was non-other than Cosmo, the little super-star flyer! I had only to stand up, grab my towel and walk less than four feet to pick him up. Cosmo was completely unconscious, dead looking, wings spread out, legs stiff, eyes completely closed and no movement at all. I gently wrapped him in my towel, and immediately started to massage his chest with my thumbs while I held him in my lap. What seemed to be an eternity, Cosmo finally started to breath and eventually there was movement! Minutes later, there was hissing fighting ball of fire in my hands!!!

Cosmo was later examined for other injuries and other than a small minor laceration that he sustained as a result of biting his tong as a result of his impact with the window, he checked out ok. To be safer than sorry, Cosmo spent the night in the rescue carrier, in a quiet cool environment so he cold be observed and monitored more closely. He will be released tomorrow in the daylight once he has had a final examination and cleared to be released.

A huge thank you to everyone who spent a good portion of their day out in the streets on the watch,,, (when I’m sure that most everyone would have rather been with friends and family BBQ’ing somewhere enjoying this fantastic sunny day)!!!!!! What a great team!!

By 10:00pm, I must admit, I was spent, and finally departed the Duncan Mills nest site and proceeded to the Canada Square at Yonge and Eglinton nest site to pick Marion up from her watch.
Stay tuned………..

The cam has been down now for several weeks. I had been checking it daily; thought at first it might just have been my Internet connection, but it's still down.

Oh no no no! Oh Kendal! I hope he can at least be used as an education bird. I really hate to see any falcon who has once tasted the freedom of the skies, found a mate, and raised a family stuck in a cage somewhere away from fellow raptors for the rest of his life. I really wish updates would be given now and then so I wouldn't be picturing poor Kendal trapped in some sort of miserable "half life". I will continue to light candles for him.

Definitely Quest (pink arrow)...pretty sure I see her wreath on the 1st 2 as well.

The transmitter has become increasingly difficult to see over the years. Most of the time all you can see is the antenna...which I believe is by the blue arrow.

I watched her walk around, turn around no antenna in view. Definitely would have seen it as it does stick up a bit and it's bent. If it's there then I'll be darned!!

Quest was there again, saw the green band. I still see NO antenna!  Anyone???

I watched her walk around, turn around no antenna in view. Definitely would have seen it as it does stick up a bit and it's bent. If it's there then I'll be darned!!

Maybe they finally caught her like they've been trying to and removed it?

As per Bruce when I asked if it was the 'backpack' or just the 'antenna':

As far as I could see, completely gone. Last Spring she had one piece of the Harness broken away. I guess she worked the 2nd one loose.

Quest Has Shed Her Transmitter and On Site with a Potential New Suitor   OH NO, not again!!
December 21, 2014 - Toronto - Don Mills

Bruce Massey Reports:

With the nest camera back online and showing us views of the adult peregrines active around the site, I decided to venture out to do a quick check in.  One of the most conspicuous things about Quest these days is that in the camera shots taken of her at the box, the antenna of her transmitter could not be seen at all.  I set out to try and confirm whether the female was Quest and if she was now backpack free.

I found her in and around the nest box soaking up the sun and with my scope was able to get excellent looks at her back.  I can say without doubt that the backpack harness and transmitter she has been wearing for the past several years is no longer there.  Quest was looking quite fabulous, all her feathers sitting neatly preened across her back and chest.  I was also able to confirm her recovery band number as Black 96 over Green V as she sat sunbathing.  The male was also quite active in the area and the two met at the box a number of times bowing and vocalizing together.  I set the scope on the male and turned my attention to the task of confirming his identity.

He spent a great deal of time up on the Harlequin building sitting in the sun and I waited for him to do some stretching and reveal the look I was seeking.  At first glance I was able to only see the USFW band and it was covered in blue tape.  This was not consistent with Skye, the male that was with Quest this past nest season.  I continued to watch and finally got the look that I was waiting for.  The band number that I could clearly see was a solid Black Y over 72 with blue tape which turns out to be a bird hatched in 2013 at the Amexon nest site named Lucky.

We are unsure when this change took place and where Skye is currently.  We will have to wait until spring to clearly understand whether Lucky or Skye will be Quest’s mate for the 2015 nesting season.

Looks like the falcon winds of change have struck again!  Hope Skye is ok.  Welcome Lucky!   :surprise:

Quest losing her satellite transmitter and magenta vest is the best Christmas present I could hope for.  I was there to see them fit her with her transmitter and I am so very happy to see her finally without it!  She is finally free of it!

Go Quest!

!!! ICICI - Both fledglings are doing well after last weeks storm!
July 21, 2013 - International, National and Local News

CPF Postmaster Reports:

July 21st - 2013
Hi All

Finally got over to ICICI tonight! Last week I saw a juvie flying towards me at intersection of Don Mills & Eglinton –knew it was a juvie because of the clumsy attempt to get a gull!! But it was great to see–think it was Lucky but could’ve been AM-E as she one tough cookie lol!

Tonight, I wanted to see all 4. When I first got there I immediately spied an adult on the “t” on the Forester building–I think it was Mom hiding out!! Waited for a bit and then a juvie flew in to roof of nest building. A couple of minutes later, in came their sibling and they both flew around the building. I was thrilled to see them both!! I walked around the building and there they were, sitting on the ICICI bank sign. They were waiting, and they didn’t have to wait long. Adult came in with food and off they all went to the roof, where they were as night fell (& Mom never left the “t”!!). Great to see our little family safe and sound.

Cathy

Though I was heartbroken when Tracy informed me last night that Skye is MIA, it's one of those bittersweet moments.

Lucky - is the son of Chester at ICI (now known as Amexon).  Chester if you may remember is the son of Haven and the former male Irving whom Stormin replaced.  Chester also once courted Quest before he settled in his new home.

Anyway for me another generation carrying Irving's bloodline is great news.  I remember seeing him flying with the 'bend' in his wing - he had been in rehab in the US for awhile and when he was released he made his way to Canada.  He found a mate, established a brand new falcon site for us and then sadly was killed in the second year.

So it's hard to be sad when you see his legacy now living on, he was an amazing tiercel and I'm so happy his legacy is continuing on.

I hope so too.  I am grateful he had 4 offspring with Quest.  For years I kept hoping one of Jack and Angel's kids would meet up with one of Mariah and Kaver's..lol.  I was tickled when it finally happened, two strong genetic lines and what beautiful kids they made

Life as a pefa isn't easy as we know but at least if something has happened, he's left some beautiful babies behind, one or more of whom may hopefully carry the legacy forward.

Could Skye have migrated? DC did his first year! Maybe he will be back but when that happens, 1 always loses!

He certainly could have migrated. I thought of that too since as you reminded us so did DC.  We'll just have to wait and see.

I expect we'll see more change here this year - we have a few falcons that are up there so I won't be surprised to see at least 2 more new pairs this year.  There are other opportunities out there for them and I wouldn't be surprised to hear that Skye has taken advantage of one of them.  He is after all the son of a rascal

As we know, Beauty and Pigott both had other suitors when Dot.ca migrated, and at least one of the UTs was very good at keeping a low profile when Dot.ca came back.  The situation here ended peacefully, as far as we know.  I hope Skye is okay and that Quest, Skye, Lucky and Kendal all have a good 2015.

There's a video on BCAW, that was posted Jan. 19th, that shows Quest in the nest box and a tiercel interacting with her.  It looked like they were kind of bowing until he hopped into the box..then it looked like she might have squawked at him and he got out fast.  I wonder if Skye migrated and Lucky is making a move?

Terka posted a photo of the two of them on January 25th over at CMNH. Here is the link - scroll down a bit and you can see them.  As to why he's not around more, I'm not sure..his age? Not all falcons mature at the same rate and he is still young.   His hormones may not be turned 'on' yet but maybe as the days lengthen that will change.

If there isn't now I'm sure there will be one in due time. Toronto is prime real estate.

They must be following the warm front coming in up the coast.  Viper may be back at Lansing and Mintake came home at Woodman yesterday.  The latter two resulted in nasty nest box fights Friday and yesterday which are posted on Facebook.

And you had an unbanded at BS yesterday as per Carol..so expect some fireworks in the next few days at various sites..the falcons are coming home.

I could, if I had any pics which showed an egg. I've been watching, but so far today I only have pics of the first egg and of Quest in the scrape, hiding any possible egg from view. I'll keep checking the cam.

Now here's a puzzlement. Quest should have laid another egg Saturday afternoon if she keeps to her usual clockwork 48 hours. I finally got a good look just now and it really does look like 2. Both Q&S are there, so that's not the problem. Just weird.

We shall see...

It's very hard to see anything in that nest box. I'm not really sure when to say hard incubation started. There was an unusually long gap between eggs 2 & 3 (#2 arrived 03/26 & #3 03/30). If we count from 03/30 it should be Saturday or thereabouts.

P.S.-if a moderator could move this discussion to the Quest & Skye thread that would be great. Thanks.

I do see a white spot when Skye is rolling the eggs, but knowing what a control freak Quest is, I really doubt she'd leave him on the eggs if one is actually pipped.

Quest just had food at the nest. She left-no apparent hatch though I can't see the one at the back well. Skye came in...Quest came in &told him something & left again. He's not hard on the eggs. Might have a hatch in progress.

I was wondering that too. Or it could be a half shell. It would be pretty late for it to be a hatch, but we've seen up to a week. We'll have to wait until we have a chance to count beaks.

From CPF:

!!! Banding day
May 20, 2015 - Toronto - Don Mills

Marion Nash Reports:

A big thank you to John Miller for his help to extract the chicks and to the great folks at Harlequin for hosting the banding. There were 3 boys this year all between 500 to 540 grams at 20 and 21 days of age. they were named Berkley, Harper and Kline sounds like a law firm to me but in this case LLP stands for Lovely little Peregrines. Berkley was named after the building management company that manages the nest building, Harper the new owners of Harlequin and Kline a CPF volunteer who assisted at this years banding. Quest and Sky kept John on his toes during the extraction but no harm to John and they settled back into their routine minutes after the chicks were back in the box. The chicks should be fledging or taking their first flights very soon sometime in the next 10 to 14 days we expect.

Photos of banding to come soon stay tuned.

Congrats to Quest and Skye!

!!! Harper the “Teflon Falcon” takes flight!
June 09, 2015 - Toronto - Don Mills
Marion Nash Reports:

June 9th 2015
Arrived this morning to find Bob on site already and he had all three chicks in site. Kline was on the same level as yesterday but had ledge walked to the farthest east end on the building and his brothers were still on the nest ledge. Not long after Berkley having seen him get fed twice that morning with no leftovers for him or Harper decided to ledge walk himself and slowly made his way east along the ledge
to sit directly above Kline.

From pretty much the time I arrived little Harper wined and yelled at his parents demanding his due share of food but got none Quest has started weening.

Everyone else stayed put until just after 4:00 when Harper decided to take off for his first flight and wouldn’t you know it we were watching the other 2 and mom who just took off on a hunt so we missed him leave.

He flew in a circle from west around the Harlequin building we know this because he did not fly in front of us. He must have then hooked to the east across the back of the building and tried t to make one more turn to head back home because he ended up on the east side of the building on a lower window ledge just above the shipping doors. Again we had not seen him leave but noticed he was gone just about a minute later. We logged onto the web camera on our cell phones and saw no one home Yikes!! Where did he get to. Bob headed across the street to have a look on the west side of the nest building thinking he too was ledge walking, went the other way and around the corner. Just as Bob got to the other side of the street the grounds keeping contractors came up to us to say they just saw one of the Falcons bump into the building concrete walls and land on a window ledge on the east side of the Harlequin building. He must have tried to make one more turn and just ran out of altitude and gas. The contractor said he just bumped into the wall and slid down to land on that ledge.

With so many watching out the window or on the web cam people started texting me within minutes. Where is Harper? He is not on the ledge is he ok? I told everyone where he was and that he was ok but only about 15 feet from the ground and his next flight may bring him to the ground so I am on it. Well by 5:00 PM I had 2 move volunteers, 5:30 2 more and by 6:00 3 more Thank you all so much!!!

Bob and I stayed watching him while other volunteers went out front to keep an eye on the other 2 boys.

Our fear was that he would end up spending the night there and perhaps take another flight before we could get there in the morning so plans for a rescue from his new position started. The security guard warned me that the garbage truck would be arriving at 8:00 PM pulling in to load up from the shipping doors just below him . We thought this may scare him off and if he comes down we could then grab him up for the rescue. Well the truck came and went no luck he just sat and watched it just about 5 feet below him.

There were some plumbing contractors taking a break at this time and joined us to have a look at the bird so we asked them for a hand. We told them there was a ladder we could use in the shipping area but it was not tall enough to reach the bird but if he could use his measuring tape extended out he could perhaps coax him off the ledge to fly again and either gain more height of come to ground in the back parking that was now empty and quiet so we could rescue him.

Well that worked great he flew across the back parking all the way to a multi level parking garage about 1000 yards gaining about 2 floors of height. Unfortunately he went right into the 3 floor parking area so off we went to try again to catch him up. Kathy and Bob were well ahead of me and I decided to remain in the back parking at ground level in case he flew out before they got to him so I could see were he went. Kathy did get to him but he is obviously made of Teflon. She walked right up to him and had her rescue towel ready but he gave her the slip and flew out and headed back to the Harlequin building landing on an even lower window ledge then he was on in the first place grrrrrr!

So it was back to get the ladder and bring it around to his new ledge. I called Mark Nash and asked him to bring me a net I was not going to miss this time!

Mark arrived and seeing that I was a little tuckered out took the net and made the attempt, did I say attempt ;) Gallant try but the slippery one escaped again and flew long and strong all the way to Bayview Glen School landing on the 3rd floor.

Safe now we watched him for another half hour until it got dark and left him sleeping for the night.

Both of his brothers still on the nest building all fine and safe.

Stay tuned for chapter 3 tomorrow.

More pictures to come.

Harper takes after his mom, Quest.  We attempted to rescue her when she came to the ground in a Kodak Parking Lot close to where traffic was going through.  We feared she would be hit by a car.  Needless to say, we got very close to getting her, when she gave us the slip!  She got herself to a low roof and eventually higher and higher.  It was all good.  Seems he takes after his momma!

 All 3 boay flying well
June 11, 2015 - Toronto - Don Mills
Marion Nash Reports:

All 3 chicks were on the top of the nest building this morning so Harper must have flown back very early in the morning. it was not long after I arrived that Quest flew in and gave Kline and Berkley a small snack. shortly after his small tidbit Kline took his second flight and this time he flew great out and around the Harlequin Building to land high up on roof of the building just east of Harlequin safe and sound. Parker on the other hand stayed in the same spot all day long. Harper the show off flew back and forth from the nest building to Harlequin then over to 240 and back to the nest building.

At 6:45 Quest went on a hunt just above our heads so Bob, Sally and I watched her drive a pigeon into the window then chase it to the west side of Harlequin. A second later she flew to the roof top with it in her mitts and fed Berkley.

I assumed that since it was now 7:00 PM and had some food he would likely stay put but no he copied Kline’s flight and landed right beside his brother on the same level of the building east of Harlequin.

Ok I said I guess we can head home now everyone is up high been fed and are safe so we could make a early night of it. I say Nay Nay Berkley landed on a pyramid shaped window on the same building slipped of and fluttered down to the ground.

We went over to scoop him up but this time he knew exactly what we were up to and had no intention of being kidnaped by aliens again. He flew low over Duncan Mill Rd yikes and east of 240 hooking east then back the way he came back across Duncan Mill Rd. when we lost sight of him. In the mean time Kline had flown to the roof top at 240. Bob walked in the direction he was headed and found him on the top of the parking garage behind Harlequin on a high retaining wall that runs along the east side safe and sound. So he now know how to get altitude from ground good for him.

When we left Harper was on the window ledge on the east side of the nest building, Kline on the roof top of 240 and Berkley on the parking garage watched over by mom on the building east of Harlequin.

All is well
June 13, 2015 - Toronto - Don Mills

Marion Nash Reports:

Arrived at Harlequin at 6:45pm. For the first 15 I could only find one on the top of Harlequin. Then the screaming started and a 2nd falcon juv came in. I waited for another 30 min then packed it in. No sooner did I shut the door when the falcon witching hour started. Quest was on top of 220 on top of the white box. I then spotted harper in front of her. The two on the harlequin building were kline and berkley.

Then the flying began. Kline was the first to fly and he did a circle around the pink building come to rest on the white box where Quest was. Quest flew to the Harlequin building. Kline followed her there landing on Donna office. Quest took off agian. Now Berkley wanted in so he circled the pink building and then circled the harlequin building and landed on the 220 building. BTW they never stopped screaming. Harper was happy to just lay in the sun occasionally getting up to flap his wing. He also had a full crop.

Quest Kline and Berkley continued to fly back and forth. Only once did Kline scare me as he looked like he was heading for the window at Harlequin. Quest also noticed he did not have the height and chased him around to avoid the building.

Amazing

June 28, 2015 - Toronto - Don Mills

Ann Brokelman Reports:

Harlequin today June 28
Arrived at 3pm in the pooring rain.
Could not see any Falcons until I went behind 240. There was quest sitting in the rain. I drove to the other side and saw skye on his normal spot on 240.
Figured kids were nearby.
Went back to watch quest. Love the feathers wet when she started to preen.
Didn’t last long as Kline came flying in screaming. On Kline arrival on ledge away flew quest to the pink building. Kline complained then flew off.

Went back to parking lot at 220. Sat with Windows down watching skye preen and then take off. I heard another scream. Found Harper on the 3rd floor of 240. Skye came in to where Harper was. Did not see any food.

At this time another juv landed on 220 on the ne corner. He was there 30 seconds He Took off over the 401 with quest on his heals.

Now I decided to leave to find out my car was dead. Battery problems. Had to wait an hour for CAA so wandered looking for more Falcons.

As I walked down stairs in flew Harper on the hydro line. Not a good combination rain and hydro. Luckily he flew off very low to ground across road and landed back on 3rd floor.

Time to go home. Harper was on the 3 Rd floor facing wall.

Just read this on the Harlequin site..bummer.  :(

Harlequin Falconcam Flies the Coop

Due to network security concerns, the Harlequin Falconcam will no longer be operating.

However, our resident falcons are still very much around and we have an active interest in their well-being. Several Harlequin employees are enthusiastic participants in the annual fledge watch to ensure the safety of the juvenile birds.

To continue following the progress of Quest, Skye and their future hatchlings, please visit the Canadian Peregrine Foundation site and click on the Toronto/Don Mills location.

Harlequin encourages anyone who wishes to learn more about peregrines, pledge support or discover what they can do to help this threatened species to visit the Canadian Peregrine Foundation at Peregine-Foundation.ca.

Hi Dot, my source tells me Kendal is doing well but is not releasable due to his extensive injuries. He'll make a wonderful education bird.

Quest at the Nest with a Winter Visitor
December 27, 2015 - Toronto - Don Mills

Bruce Massey Reports:

I attended the Duncan Mill Road site on Saturday to check in on Quest and Skye.  I found Quest in the nest box doing some house cleaning, moving several pebbles around as I watched.  She stepped out into view on the porch and I was able to confirm her band number at that time in my scope.  A male was perched on 240 Duncan Mill Road and I turned the scope on him for a view.  My initial look caught red tape on the USFW that he bears on his right leg.  Knowing that this is not consistent with Skye, I called Tracy for a consultation.  I continued to focus my attention on the male and was finally able to get a read on his band number.  This male is donning a solid black recovery band marked W over 78.  This is McKenney from the Amexon nest site hatched in 2014.

Last year, Skye migrated in late fall and Quest spent the winter with a visitor then as well.  Lucky, at the time a one year old and also from the Amexon site, spent time around the territory with Quest until spring when Skye returned.  Lucky then moved on to take over the Etobicoke Sun Life nest site territory where he is currently the resident male.

It is quite possible that this is the same scenario as last year.  Skye has migrated for the winter and Quest has chosen to remain.  A young male finds his way into the territory and spends the winter until the man of the house returns.  We do believe that this is the case and we will look for Skye’s return in the spring.  This is the exact same situation that we see at the William Osler site every winter now so it is not extremely out of the ordinary.  The best news that comes out of these observations is that McKenney has come a long way from the young fledgling watched over a year ago by the Amexon team and is looking very much a dapper little man.

Duncan Mill Road update! Bruce was out to the site yesterday and had both adults on site. He was able to confirm their band numbers and Quest is happy that Skye is now home from migration! Not only were the two actively flying about the territory and visiting the nest box but copulation was on the agenda as well. Spring is on it's way!

So "singles" would still be looking for sites at this stage in the breeding season? I did not know that.

It used to be that we only saw it during breeding season and that may be because we didn't have cams to watch year round like we do now.  It seems the past few years we're seeing displacements at different times of the year.  It was assumed that they were only driven by raging hormones in the Spring when in fact securing a territory of their own may be just as strong of a motivator as producing offspring is.  I suppose when you think about it, both go hand in hand - you secure a territory and a mate and then you can produce offspring :)

I just checked in today to see how the kids were doing and just happened to see the male on cam.  Like you I saw a heart and thought..oh it's Skye but then I saw his legs and both legs were dark bands.  Then I saw other things that were different ..subtle differences.  On my work pc I just saw dark on both legs.  Wasn't until I got home tonight and onto my good home pc with the better graphic cards that I saw 'red' on one leg and black on the other.

I'm sure CPF will let us know what is going on.  It was just a fluke that I saw them on cam.  Whoever it is, she's comfortable with him.  All 4 times he was there, so was she..she was inside feeding the kids and he waited patiently outside the box for her.

I didn't know stuff was going on here save for what was posted here the other day about a falcon dive bombing Quest... I had no idea. I hope my Skye is okay, I still remember him as a juvie down on the lower roof top looking at me trying to figure out how to get back up to the nest.  :(

New update from Bruce on CPF:

With the weather and strong wind that was causing my scope to shake and my eyes to water I struggled for a band read yet I did manage to get a partial band number. The solid black recovery band was W over 7 something.  Those two alpha numerics along with the red tape that was clearly visible were enough to conclude that this was most likely McKinney, the bird I had seen on this territory in December.

Despite all of these changes Quest is taking incredible care of the chicks.  They are well fed and looked after as witnessed during my two visits there.

Tuesday May 17

I spent around 3 hrs. at the Duncan Mill nest site today watching the dynamics between the adults and confirming that the chicks were being well fed. When I arrived Quest was at the nest ledge and the chicks were all sleeping in the rear of the nest box. Saying that , one of the chicks walked up to the edge of the nest box much to the surprise of Quest as they are now getting much more mobile. Around half an hour later a male brought in some food.   It was the male I identified yesterday as McKinney with the red tape over his USFW band.  The food was accepted by Quest, taken in and fed to the chicks. He then approached the nest box but didn’t go in or on the landing platform.  In fact in the 2 days I’ve watched him he has been everywhere on the nest ledge with the exception of actually going inside the nest box.  He is also closely watched by Quest.  At times I couldn’t see her up on the Harlequin building but I could readily hear her vocalizing nearby. After she left the ledge, there was about an hour or so where the chicks were alone.  McKinney dropped in a couple of times and also went over to the Thales building and was seen hunting the valley. I found Quest nearby on the roof of 240 keeping a watchful eye over all his movements.  As I left, Quest was on the nest ledge and McKinney was hunting off the Thales Building.

Despite all of these changes Quest is taking incredible care of the chicks.  They are well fed and looked after as witnessed during my two visits there.  Again there was no sign of Skye in the area but we have put out the word and are keeping an eye out for him.

Bruce Massey

Probably both of them are the dads.  I've watched him and he's in the box a lot with the babies and shows interest in them.  Most times when new males come in and there are kids, they don't hurt them but they don't pay much attention to them either.  Quest seems to trust him with the kids too.

!!! The new male “Mac” is caught on camera feeding his adopted chicks!
May 28, 2016 - Toronto - Don Mills

Marion Nash Reports:

Saturday May 28th - 2016

Marta took a snapshot today of the new male Mac as he’s been nick-named, feeding the chicks and you can see the entire family in this shot!

This is what we have been waiting for! It appears that Mac, the new resident male at the Duncan Mill nest site has finally stepped up and is now feeding his adopted hatchlings, (as we know, Mac replaced the resident adult male Sky sometime after the eggs hatched), and although Mac has been providing food to Quest all along,, - remembering that he is still very much in courting mode,, this is the first evidence of him actually feeding the chicks. It does appear that Mac is under a very watchful eye of Quest as seen in the photo, with Quest standing just beside of the event obviously ready to jump in should things not go right.

It will be interesting to see if Mac will carry on with the fatherly duties, as it is the male that does most of the flight and hunting training with the fledglings!
Stay tuned……….

!!! Not long now!
June 01, 2016 - Toronto - Don Mills

Marion Nash Reports:

June 1st 2016
They still have white fluffy legs and a lot of down but they’re flapping up a storm and running about.

Not long now :)

It was lovely to see the photo on the CPF site showing Mac feeding a chick. I have still yet to see it whenever I’m watching! Need to have that web cam on all the time now! Yesterday he flew in with food, and Quest turned her back on him and totally shut him out. He stayed off to the side, and eventually crept over with the food. She took it, half heartedly it appeared, and there was a bit of a tug of war (quite comical) between the two. Then she flew off with it, probably to enjoy it herself. He stayed there for a while, doing what he mostly does when I happen to look over with the binocs. Just stare at the “step kids”. Then fly off. Too funny.

Lots of flapping and wing workouts
June 04, 2016 - Toronto - Don Mills

Marion Nash Reports:

Kathy, Bob and I spent a few hours on watch today just to check in on the chicks to make sure no one left the ledge earlier than expected and though there was lots of wing flapping they are not quite ready to go but very soon perhaps another couple days. All 4 seen at nest when we left and Quest just left to go hunting.

Boys will be boys….trouble lol
June 07, 2016 - Toronto - Don Mills

Cathy Kerr Reports:

What a day with 3 boys!!!  Started off fairly quietly-found Achilles on the roof with Mom, Marta in the nest box, Geddy one ledge down and Jet one ledge down from that!  Geddy & Jet had figured out how to pass the pillars, so back and forth they went!  Then Achilles took a lovely flight off the roof, over the parking lot to the south west, circled and flew back to the roof!!  Way to go Achilles!! Bob & I were joined by Irma. Now, the other boys…both were blown down a ledge lower each! Very windy day! Mom stuffed Marta–she was fed a least 5 times today!  The boys…not so lucky.  After Achilles flight, Mum rewarded with a bite. Then fed Geddy, then Marta…but not poor Jet.  Everyone settled for a wee nap, Achilles on the roof corner for abit, then jumped down on the roof out of sight.  Mom came in with MORE food for Marta, causing quite a raucus with Jet & Geddy, causing Jet to fall another floor lower…yes the lowest floor!  We had started to wonder about Achilles, so I was off looking for him, everyone else was waiting for Jet to fall when Geddy decided to try his first flight!  Unfortunatly, he hit the 5th floor window on the east side of the Harlequin building(yes that favorite spot) and came down!  Thanks to the lovely young ladies at HQ for finding him for us!  Bob got the net on him and we got him in the crate and he spent the rest of the day in quiet comfort!  So, now we have one in the nest box, one in the crate, one on the bottom floor and one MIA.   Jet spent the next 4 hours or so on that ledge.   Bob did escort some geese and their gosling to the river in the meantime lol. But still no sign of Achilles. Until I watched Quest, circle round and round, going over 240 building and HQ building.  Hmmm. Watched her float above 240, so I went over and around(Bob & I swore we heard a faint squeeing) then watched Quest land on the roof.  Next thing she is heading over to her corner at HQ….with Achilles in tow!!  They landed on her corner, then she took off over to the nest building and Achilles followed-he was home!!  Great flying!!!  He didn’t stay too long and headed back to 240! Meanwhile, Mark and Marion arrived, and Geddy was checked over and released to the roof!  He was up to the corner in no time!  By the time Mark & Bob got down from the roof, Jet was down!  He was quickly scooped up and up to the roof he went!  My cue to go home!!  Mark, Marion & Bob stayed behind til dark.  But first Geddy had to fly again, of course!  He ended up behind HQ!  Jet stayed on the roof, Marta in the nest box and Achilles, well, he took a bit of a fit and flew, and flew and flew!  Mark swears at least 5 minutes and he went FAR! Across Don Mills!!! Ended up on the Tridel building and there he was at dark.  No worries about him-his flying is spectacular and he will be home when he is ready!! So tomorrow, its Geddy and Jet’s turn for some spectacular flying–just stay up boys!

Cold, windy…and the boys loved it!
June 08, 2016 - Toronto - Don Mills

Cathy Kerr Reports:

I froze. Irma froze. Bob froze. But the boys loved the wind!  Geddy spent the night on the 2nd floor ledge of the Harlequin building and was there for a few hours in the morning.  He made a nice flight to the top of the school bldg, then went back to the nest bldg and joined his brothers!!  All three are flying well,  tho Achilles is by far the best!  The wind is serving them well and Quest and Mac have been on hand to help them out. Now Marta on the other hand,  got blown down one ledge and has spent the rest of the day there!   Around 2pm mom brought food for her but first gave her a lesson in how to prepare it! Lovely e-chup chuping as Quest taught her daughter and the feathers were flying!! Not sure if she got much as mom then took it with her!  Now there’s a lesson lol.
The boys then got fed, and all was quiet as they snoozed.  Jet and a brother hung out on the nest roof top, flying occasionally.  Jet spent most of his day on the nest roof top, always flying home!  The other two were off flying about much more-really enjoying their freedom.  At night fall, Jet and his brother(we tried hard but he wouldn’t show us his leg for id) were on the home roof, the other brother chose another rooftop nearby and “little” Marta settled in on her ledge!  More fun flying to watch tomorrow–let’s just hope for some warmer weather…and a little less wind

Marta takes flight
June 11, 2016 - Toronto - Don Mills

Marion Nash Reports:

Bob was the first one on site this morning and found that Marta had finally left the nest building. She was on the ledge 2 floors down 2 from the roof of 240 next door so we were pleased to see she had gained some height. She spent the morning there alone until the early afternoon when her brother Jet decided to drop in to visit his sister and the 2 spent time together playing, snuggling and peak touching it was very sweet but when mom flew over with food it was every fledgeling for himself and he flew off in pursuit of lunch leaving Marta flapping and yelling on the ledge.

2 of the boys got fed on the roof above her and shortly after she took another awkward flight around to the front of the building and landed on the ledge about 1 floor lower but still ok. She had not been fed the day before as the adults refused to bring food to her so low, only 2 floors up from ground so she was very eager now, flapping and yelling and running the ledge and we could see she was ging to go again so we had the net in hand ready to run to get her just in case. About 15 minutes later she took off across the street towards Harlequin and bumped a window and landed in the parking lot.

We slowly approached to try to catch her but she flew back across the street before we could get close enough to net her and again landed on the ground. We finally caught her in the net and checked her over to see if the window bump have caused any injury and found her to be just fine.

Shortly after we took her back up to the roof just above the nest to be realised just as we had for all 3 of her brothers but this time the bird bolted off the roof and across the street over my head wile I watched from below and Mark watched from the roof flew out of site well out of our site behind 255 Duncan Mill and now the search was on to find her.

Mark and I went looking for her and were joined by her name sake Marta Kline and Cathy Kerr and we looked for her well into the evening and cold not find where she had landed so we closed the evening watching the boys flying around like little F16’s hoping that from where ever she had gotten to she may see them and come to join her family but that was not to happen so if she is not back we will have to try find her again tomorrow.

(http://i63.tinypic.com/2cmw776.jpg) Here's Marta

!!! Marta Found High And Safe!
June 12, 2016 - Toronto - Don Mills

Marion Nash Reports:

June 12th - 2016
Not to much flying today with the strong wind gusts but the good news is that we found Marta!!

When we first arrived we found only one fledgling on the back upper ledge at 240 and had only one quick fly through by Quest. We could not hear any squawking when Quest flew through but there was a huge event with relay racing going on at the back parking lot of the Harlequin building with hundreds of children and adults and lots of noise so we likely could not have heard them anyway. We focused again on a massive ground search for Marta in the direction and area that we last saw her fly off too, but no luck.

With all the noise from the event the sound was bouncing off the buildings and echoing all over and Quest and her boys seemed to be keeping some distance or perhaps it was just too windy so Mark and I decided to go and get some breakfast and come back.

While we were eating Kathy and Irma came to help out and parched themselves in a spot beside Harlequin out of the worst of the wind to keep an eye on the nest building and 240.

Mark and I arrived shortly after and just as we did we saw Quest fly in and land on an upper ledge of the east side of 240 and join one of her chicks who ran over to her wings flapping with excitement. As soon as we parked I went over to have a look at who was on the ledge with her while Mark went over to talk to Kathy and Irma to get and give updates. I was not there for long when I saw Quest on yet another ledge the fledgling I had seen with her was still in the same spot and another fledgling was on a lower elevation.

I pulled out my camera hoping to get some shots of the leg bands on the 2 fledglings to get a band tape colour and see how we had there but again with the wind they were back from the edge and I just could not get a view of their bands. As I looked at both of them I could see that the one on the top ledge was larger than the one lower down so I was quite sure in my mind that it was Marta, if only I could get a look at that band!!!

I radioed over to Mark and the girls to let them know what I was seeing and Irma and Kathy came over to have a look with me bringing with them the spotting scope. We were not long together when Quest flew off her ledge past and got Marta up and moving and we were able to get a good look, It’s red shouted Irma she’s home!

I managed despite the gusty winds and my excitement to snap a quick picture and was able to confirm that yes it was indeed her. We stayed watching her for a short time until Quest came in and fed her and like Marta had always done before she ate and plopped down for a nap.

With Marta found and no more flying from anyone Kathy and Irma headed home and Mark and I closed off the day. There were a few flights by at least 2 of the boys over to the Tridel building and 1 short flight from Marta out half way to Tridel and then back to the upper ledge of 240.

By darkness, we had all four fledglings in view, all high and out of danger!!!

Sadly, we have just received a call from Lisa at the TWC that an adult peregrine with Red tape, banded with a Black Canadian Recovery band W over 78 was just received from the Toronto Animal Services moments ago after being picked up from the streets on Bayview Ave., with multiple bone breaks and fractures along with severe internal trauma. Black W over 78 turns out to be McKinney,, Quests mate!!

Unfortunately Mac, (McKinney) had to be put down, as there was absolutely no way of saving him given the extent of his injuries and internal trauma.

McKinney,, (or Mac as he was nick-named), was produced at the Don Mills and Eglinton nest site at the Amexon building in 2014. Mac re-appeared out of the blue late this season where he replaced the existing resident adult male (Sky) at the Duncan Mills nest site where Quest and Sky were already involved in full time incubation of four fertile eggs.

Incredibly, Mac, assisted Quest with both with her incubation duties of the four eggs, and then adopted the hatchlings and assisted with feeding and raising them as if they were his own!

We were all waiting and closely watching with baited breath to see if Mac would continue on with the role as a father. He proved himself and proceeded to both assist with the feeding of the four hatchlings and then carry on with the other parental duties throughout. He has in fact been flight training the four fledglings as we documented during the fledge watch several weeks ago!!

Sadly, it looks like Quest is now on her own once again to finish the flight training of her four fledglings and to teach them to hunt, (a role that is usually undertaken by the adult male).

We will be watching closely again to see if Quest will be able to keep up with the demands of her four fledglings again this season!

As you may recall, the same thing happened to poor Quest several seasons ago when her long standing mate “Kendal” was found injured and Quest was left to raise her four fledglings on her own for the balance of the season. Kendal was not able to be returned back to the wild given the severity of his injuries.

Quest was successful as a single parent that year, (although two years younger),, but there is no reason to believe that she should have any problems this time, so long as she herself stays out of the traffic and clear of the buildings!!!!

Quest sure has had a rough time of it this year. I'm very sorry about McKinley and hope Quest can handle raising her family alone.

I know this is an old topic but Cosmo is Quest and Skye's son so I put it here - feel free to move if you like.

Some fantastic news...thanks to CPF watcher Lucie!  Belle (Beauty's sister and Unity's mama) and Allens daughter Dr Jane is Cosmo's mate and they have two babies!

A new nest site in St. Mary's, Ontario, has been discovered and its family of peregrine falcons is getting a lot of attention. So much that they even made the headlines in the local newspaper! (I have attached a link)

At the time this article went to press, we knew about dad. He's COSMO (W/73), 2014 hatch at Duncan Mills, North York. He is the son of the famous Quest (from Rochester, New York) and her mate Skye (Toronto boy, from Bloor/Islington). There are two surviving juveniles, the second having fledged just a few days ago. As I observed yesterday, both juvies are flying well.

I am happy to report that after much determination, I have managed to ID the female! She is DR. JANE (32/Z), 2014 hatch from University of Toledo in Ohio. She is the daughter of Belle and Allen, and yesterday I learned the bittersweet story behind this couple and why Dr. Jane is a very special falcon. Belle (hatched in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in 2003) and Allen (hatched in Lima, Ohio in 2004) have been together since late 2006. They produced 24 offspring from 2007-2014. In 2014, Belle was attacked by another female and was seriously hurt .. while incubating her four eggs! Two eggs hatched and Belle, even in her injured state, took care of them. It was not expected that these eggs would hatch, much less thrive and fledge, but they did! And one of them, Dr. Jane, is now a mother of two in St. Mary's!

Belle never returned to the nest, and as of 2015, Allen has been with a new female, so the legacy of Belle continues with Dr. Jane as her last child. I don't know the status of Dr. Jane's brother, Tennant.

Dr Jane would be Unity's younger sister and Beauty's niece :)   Cosmo would also be DotCa's nephew through DC's brother Skye.

So ... they have to bring a gift to the house warming now

These juvies are descended from the legendary pairings of Mariah and Kaver and Dorothy and Erie.  WOW!  Super falcons!!!

I know some people don't like that the falcons are banded, but I just love to know who they are and where they come from. Thanks for this wonderful news Carly!

Happy Boxing Day from St. Mary's, Ontario! That handsome guy on the right is Cosmo, son of Quest and Skye (from Don Mills) and he's sharing a meal with his beautiful mate, Dr. Jane, daughter of Belle and Allen (from Toledo, Ohio). Looks like both are wintering together at home. The story of the newly discovered nest was posted on July 13. Thank you so much to Don and Kim Bailey from St. Mary's, who first alerted us to this new nest site, for continuing to keep watch and for these awesome photos!!!! Cheers, Lucie

Thank you Lucie!!
