Just wondering... do schools etc close in such cold conditions?

Yes, they sometimes do Bobbie.  The superintendent of the city schools decided to keep the schools open yesterday morning.  I was very surprised that they did not close them.

Here In N.H. they have a 2 hour delay-so instead of -4 it is -8 degrees !!

Some schools here have closed or had a 2 hour delay!

It's the frozen tundra out there!  Soooooooo cold!  Thank goodness there is no wind.  6,000 people with no power in the area.  Be very careful if you have to go out this morning and bundle up!   :natale3:

Rochester woke up to a lot of snow this morning with more to come.  I barely got out of my driveway and was more than happy to follow three plows going 17 mph down Mt Read Blvd.  Be safe and warm everyone!

Mis-measured here looking out the window-it was actually 10 inches!

The roads were slippery & snow covered but passable. My only problem was the guy riding my bumper the whole way. He didn't back off even after he almost hit me when I had to slow down for some deer crossing the road! Yutz!

Minus 6 (F) on the Rfalconcam thermometer.  It's colder than that in some places around Rochester.  900 people without power in Greece (NY).  Wind chills of 20 to 25 below zero expected.  It's a big brrrrr out there.  The roads were snow covered on my way into work, but as long as you take it slow and easy, you should be able to get where you're going safely.  It helps that there are a lot of people off for Presidents Day  Take care everyone and keep warm!!!   :natale3:

Another cold, frigid day in Rochester, NY, with yet another wind chill warning in affect (until 7am tomorrow morning).  When I left for work this morning, it was +9 degrees (F).  It's now +3 degrees and the weather folks say the temps will plummet during the day.  Stay warm and be safe!  Each day Spring gets a little closer.   :cool-045:

It's a heatwave here in Rochester, NY!  When I woke up this morning for work, it was 20 degrees ABOVE zero and snowing.  25 degrees warmer than it was at that time yesterday morning.   :clap:

The snow made for some sloppy travel this morning.  But traffic was still moving, a little slower than usual, but that's ok.  Slow and easy gets you where you're going.

Temps are expected to drop during the day, and we might get a bit of sun later on.  I'm all good with that!

We finally made it to March!  February, the coldest one on record here in Rochester, NY, is finally behind us!  Woohoo!   :yahoo:

It was 22 degrees ABOVE Zero when I drove into work today around 6 am with a light snow falling.  They say it won't get much higher than that.  But, I'm not complaining.  +22 is much better than what we've had.  The roads are a little slick, but as long as you take it easy, it's all good.

I think one more day above freezing would finish off that snow. Won't be tomorrow-high temp of only 16(F). Starting Saturday we will have the start to a meltdown of all this snow-temps above freezing for at least 10 days!!! Then you cam watchers will be busy watching Beauty and DC.  ;)

Well, here we are, back in the teens.  Our temps in the 30's yesterday helped to melt some of the snow from the nest box.  Both Beauty and Dot.ca were quite active in the scrape, digging it out.   :clap:

The weather folks are calling for a warm up early next week.  I for one cannot wait!  I know that most of us are very winter weary.  Spring will be here before we know it!  Enjoy the day and stay warm!   :wave:

Saw that snow-free nest-box, Carol P. They can stop excavating, it seems. Interesting to note that the falcons - and many other species (?) - are triggered by daylight rather than temps.

Springtime comes earlier here, and the Corvids are already flying about with hulking great logs. But our Robins are still fighting over territory. I await the first signs of Courtship Feeding, which is always so charming - and a sure sign that Nature is on the turn.

Whew!  I always get a little nervous when I see one of them on the third ibeam of OCSR.  It often means trouble.  He's still there, but he's facing the building and he looks calm, plus B is accounted for, so all is right in the Rochester falcon world.

Could be the weather change.  Cold and snow this morning.  Plus a lot of Peregrines out and and about right now.  I had a feeling that was her earlier, when I posted the pic, but couldn't tell for sure and didn't want to say.

Something very strange about today! Seeing B in the middle of deck this am had me a bit worried. Maybe chasing out rogues!!

If I am able, I plan on stopping downtown after work to check on the falcons.  I definitely had a Peregrine at KPW yesterday, which is where Unity was located.

Ok phew, both in nest box bowing...was able to confirm B's bands.

I think this is what happens most of the time.  Dot.ca goes into the nest box first.  He's busy scraping on the left side, when Beauty arrives to supervise from the right side.  They have a little beak to beak chat session and usually Dot.ca leaves.  Beauty then does some scraping herself, getting it just right!  Then she stands over the depression, making sure it is perfect for her soon to be eggs.  Once she is happy with it, she steps out to the perch and does a little preening and snoozing.   :D

Hmmm...with M&K and B&DC, looks like it's a male-female thing.  Dads on the left, moms on the right.

That's it Bobbie.  Sometimes it is more pronounced.

Guess I wasn't paying that much attention to stuff like that back in the M&K days...

Thanks for the answers!  Sounds about right.  I had just never seen that before.  It very much resembled a parent-eyas situation, like he was feeding her pebbles.  He would go way down deep into the scrape as if to pick something up in his beak, then come up and twist his neck so his beak was under her beak.  He did this about three times in quick succession.  I'll be curious to see if he does it again.  

Sorry Pat.  I was watching Rhea Mae and Tiago together in their nest tray and they were beak to beak for about 5 mins.  Not live streaming video, but it looked the same as what Beauty and Dot.ca did.  I've seen adults do this as well as adult to eyas.

When billing, northern gannets raise their beaks high and clatter them against each other.

During courtship, mated pairs of many bird species touch or clasp each other's bills. Termed billing (also nebbing in British English), this behavior appears to strengthen pair bonding. The amount of contact involved varies among species. Some gently touch only a part of their partner's beak while others clash their beaks vigorously together.

Gannets raise their bills high and repeatedly clatter them, the male puffin nibbles at the female's beak, the male waxwing puts his bill in the female's mouth and ravens hold each other's beaks in a prolonged "kiss". Billing can also be used as a gesture of appeasement or subordination. Subordinate gray jay routinely bill more dominant birds, lowering their body and quivering their wings in the manner of a young bird food begging as they do so. A number of parasites, including rhinonyssids and Trichomonas gallinae are known to be transferred between birds during episodes of billing.

Usage of the term has spread beyond avian behavior; "billing and cooing" in reference to human courtship (particularly kissing) has been in use since Shakespeare's time,and derives from the courtship of doves.

Here's video of 2nd egg.  You can get an idea of how long active labor is for Beauty.  She gets up, moves around a little, defecates out the box, then starts actively pushing.  Egg is "delivered" around the 7:06 mark in video.  The first real good view we get of egg based on still is 10:47, but it was probably laid around 10:38 and she hovered over it to dry.

It was so funny.  He was there about 10 minutes before at corner of deck with a good sized food delivery that Beauty wasn't interested in. Appears she just wants to rest.  He came back with a little chunk, trying to get her out of the box.  He approached twice, before finally entering the box.  That got Beauty to take the chunk and leave, allowing him to settle in for a nap with his eggs. He brought his own pillow this time too!

They usually do start incubation after the third egg, last year she didn't and remember we thought she might lay 5.  I expect the cold evening temps earlier this week has them sticking to the more traditional incubation mode.  I too expect a 4th egg today...no pressure B  :angel: :lol:
