Title: Seneca (2008) Sighted at Brookpark Road Bridge with Mate (Cheyenne)!
Post by: carly on 23-Mar-10, 03:47:09 PM
Just found this breaking news over at CMNH and thought you guys would like to know!!

C&C called me and said the female is black over green 95V and she is Seneca from the 2008 Rochester nest. Unfortunately, they could not get the male's bands today.

Here is the link to the thread!

If this is the same bridge, it's nice with a stream where Seneca was spotted. Cleveland Ohio, I guess.

Oh this is so exciting to know where our falcons have gone.  Does anyone know if this bridge is an established nest site?

Thanks Carly for letting everyone know.

Posted on the CMNH board last night by Chad + Chris:

After we talked to you, Liz, we were able to confirm that it's Cheyenne here with Seneca. Saw them copulate three times and found a ledge (that looks like it could be a potential nest site) where they were going up and doing their courtship displays. Liz-- Thanks again for letting us know that you saw them here and for finding out the ID of the female so quickly after we told you the band numbers.

We'll get pics on soon.

It looks like the possible nest ledges are over the shore.  Some bridges are dangerous places to fledge from, but this one looks like a perfect spot.  I wonder whether peregrines have nested there before?  Anyhow, wow!

Thanks, Lisa.

For non-Rochesterians, here is a picture of one of the bridges over the Rochester gorge of which Seneca may well have a memory - and I think it looks a lot like where she is now.

She was very reluctant.  That summer, Mariah seemed to be really having fun with the juvies.  She took so much care with Seneca, flying with her and tending to her.  I still remember the day at the bridge when Dan S. said he thought he was watching Mariah flying and in a stoop-- and found that it was Seneca.

Carol P - is my memory correct (it often isn't) that it was Seneca who sat on the pedestrian bridge, just outside the railings, watching the people go by only inches away? So you and I, wanting to show her that she should not trust people, ran towards her to scare her away - and people thought we were just awful!

Wow! A couple of days late to the party (that's what happens, when I'm not reading the posts regulary!), but this is such wonderful news as I'm "somewhat" attached to Seneca from 2008!

I've created a little collage showing pictures from Seneca at banding day 2008, finally (f)ledging and now as an adult in Cleveland. She really grew up and is now a beautiful falcon!

Cheers

I can't remember (my memory's fading too!).  So many of the young fledglings get a little too close to people and not all people should be trusted.   :surprise:

Actually, the episode on the bridge, where the juvie sat on the bridge, just behind the blue "fence" on either side of it, as everyone walked by, most of them not even noticing her, was probably longer ago than 2008, so I guess it may not have been her. I thought I had a photo of her looking between the blue bars, but I can't find it.

I’ve always said that a Peregrine Falcon is a gift that blossoms before our eyes. From the wet, pink almost featherless newly hatched chick to the white fluff of the eyas to the awkward pin-feather covered youngsters to the dark & milk chocolate brown patterns of the fledgling. At that point, you almost get a glimpse of what they will look like when they lose their juvenile feathers. But it is a true honor to see the young fledgling we watched grow before our eyes transformed into their adult plumage. Then do we see the parents we adored.   :falcon2:

Sharing one of the most exciting falcon watches some the local watchers experienced with Seneca on July 7, 2008...

M/K - Seneca's Super Sensational Stupendous Stoop!

I was out very early this morning with Dan S, Jeanne, and Larry O.
It was mostly quiet. There had been a few food drops by Kaver, who
was on fledge watch himself, while Mariah was elsewhere. While Kaver
was relaxing on his lazyboy, I mean his lilies at the top of the
Kodak Tower, Seneca decided to take a spin around the tower, in her
turbo-charged body. You would never guess that this young Peregrine
was the last to fledge.

We all stood up, tracking Seneca's (at the time we had no idea that
it was Seneca) flight with our binoculars. She was so graceful in
the early morning, very hazy, very warm morning air. Slowly
floating, flicking a wing here, adjusting a tail feather there,
watching the gorge below, seeing something.

Something caught her attention in the gorge below. We watched in
astonishment as she folded her wings against her body, tucked in her
talons, aimed herself downward, and SHE STOOPED!

For a moment, we all questioned ourselves. Was this a fledgling or
an adult? No way was a fledgling stooping like that. It had to be
Kaver coming off of the lilies and passing by his daughter. No way!

We watched in amazement as she stooped from the tower into the
gorge. None of us were able to see what she may have been after.
All I saw was a gull trying to get out of her way.

She pulled up and landed beneath the bridge. Larry, Jeanne, Dan and
I ran down to where we last saw her. We were able to get a very good
view of her and she abliged us by showing off her pretty silver
band. Yep, this stupendous stoop was done by young Seneca.

I have NEVER seen a fledgling/juvie, stoop like this before. It was
incredible!

Carol P.

Try to refresh it maybe?  Sometimes depending on speed of your connection, it doesn't load properly.  I get that sometimes too.

No I have cable, it loads fast but this says done but nothing is there. Something is blocking it. I have Firefox and never had a problem with this site. Oh boy.

Donna:  Can you get to the main page of the site: http://www.falconcam-cmnh.org/news.php

If you can, click on Forum under the main menu; then select Cuyahoga County Falcons

and then Brookpark Rd. Bridge 2010  for Seneca's site.

It's working OK for me in firefox, but I just did a new upgrade last night v 3.6.3...

Anyway-until you get it figured out, a sample...

Nope, can't get that either Carly. I don't know why...I always got on that page. I upgraded to the new Firefox and still nothing. All it says is Done with nothing there.

Have you tried clearing out your cookies &/or restarting your computer?  I'm noticing my cookies are getting clogged up faster with all the nest activity and browsing the new main cam archive...

I am getting the same blank page/done on that site. Have never had any problems before. I, too, am on Firefox 3.6.3 (on Mac) but think my problem started shortly before that upgrade.

I miss checking that site and seeing C&C's photos.

I can't get it in Firefox or IE.  This is what comes up in IE:

"The website declined to show this webpage

   Most likely causes:
This website requires you to log in.
This error (HTTP 403 Forbidden) means that Internet Explorer was able to connect to the website, but it does not have permission to view the webpage."

May have figured out a possible issue -- the problem shows up on my desktop Mac with processor that is NOT Intel-based. But the site comes up fine on my MacBook that is Intel-based.

From the CMNH forum...Chad & Chris...

The news here today is... Seneca and Cheyenne have their first egg! We couldn't see it until Cheyenne rolled it out from behind the build-up of concrete in the middle of the cubby. And not long after that they had to start defending again. Joyce, you mentioned past Easter battles in Rochester-- well, we had one here today. They drove out a first-year female with Cheyenne taking on the main role as attacker. We'll describe more and post some photos tomorrow night (as it's too late again)!

Just posted by Chad & Chris on the CMNH forum (http://www.falconcam-cmnh.org/e107_plugins/forum/forum_viewtopic.php?49383.60)

Thanks to you both, Dumpsterkitty and Joyce-- appreciate you providing a link to CMNH for this great website that they host!

Catching up from yesterday-- here are some pics of Cheyenne and Seneca with their first egg. The first shot shows Cheyenne on one of his favorite perches to the right of the nest as Seneca is in the nest. We didn't know there was an egg up there and couldn't see it here, but then Cheyenne flew up later and rolled it out from behind the concrete mound (in the next four shots). The last two shots show Seneca with the egg...

Great pics and thanks for posting, as I can't see the page. I'm kind of worried about the nest...there's really no gravel and nothing to hold the eggs in place. This is concerning, especially for a new mom like Seneca. Any thoughts on this?

Thanks Ei

It certainly isn't ideal, but it looks like there's enough stuff up there to keep the eggs from rolling too far.  Remember, before the neat little nest boxes we're used to they regularly nested on almost bare rock ledges-still do in most cases-we just don't get to see it.

Just a quick update here-- Seneca had a second egg as of Tuesday. As of Thursday they have been incubating. There could be another egg in there, but we have only been able to see two because of the concrete mound in the cubby. Hopefully they have more than two eggs-- sometimes a pair in their first year of nesting will have a smaller than average clutch. We'll get some more pics on sometime over the weekend.

New pictures on the CMNH Forum (http://www.falconcam-cmnh.org/e107_plugins/forum/forum_viewtopic.php?49383.90) from Chad & Chris of Seneca & Cheyenne

And for those with viewing problems...

"Joyce-- we only know that there are two eggs for sure. We could see them when they were a little more in view to the right of the concrete build-up. They are incubating directly behind the concrete build-up and even at our highest viewing point, the concrete blocks the eggs, even during an exchange when they are off of them.

We've been able to see alot at this nest site, so we're going to post a bunch of pics. In this first sequence, Seneca is coming out of the nest cubby with food that Cheyenne brought in to her... "

They are a gorgeous pair and I always thought Seneca was so striking as a juvie-so dark like Kaver.  My favorite pic of her is by Lou which he put on one of his great postcards.

Chad and Chris at the CMNH website have posted some fantastic new shots of Seneca and Cheyenne. If you can access it, it's worth the visit.  Some of the pics show the "remarkable" flying ability of Seneca (she had very good teachers!) when they sighted a cat near the scrape! It also shows closeups of their 2 eggs.

I still can't access that page or the Cleveland falcon page. I don't get it. I've been on those pages for years til now.  :(

Not all the pics, but a nice selection for those who can't access it...thanks to Chad & Chris & CMNH (http://www.falconcam-cmnh.org/e107_plugins/forum/forum_viewtopic.php?49383.110)

Here's a sequence where we tried a different angle to try to see the eggs a little better. Even while they were off briefly we could only see two for sure, so maybe that's all. Here Cheyenne flew up, but then he took off before Seneca. She took off after him and then Cheyenne went back up on the eggs a short time later. In the second to last pic it looks like they are getting ready to race...

And here's Cheyenne flying with food (what looked to us like a yellow-bellied sap-sucker)-- he flew by the nest a couple times, probably wanting her to fly out for a food exchange. But then he landed, ate some, and flew out again before taking it up to the nest cubby...

Here's a sequence where the pair saw a cat walking on the bank under the road fairly close to the nest site and both started "intimidating" the cat into leaving the area. They showed their remarkable flight abilities, especially Seneca with some upside-down flying as she kept her head and eyes fixated on the cat. Neither of them came very close to the cat, as he couldn't have gotten to the nest ledge, and he escaped untouched. Here's Seneca displaying a graceful flip manuever (notice her big crop)...

Cheyenne mostly circled and cruised around, but dove at the cat as it was departing (couldn't capture it, though), and then darted back in to the nest...

No idea.  Like you, I used to go to that site all the time and I've been a member for a long time.  I was able to get in when it was first announced that Seneca was there.  Saw the pics and the posts and then wham!  The next time I tried, I couldn't get into the site.  Go figure.  Very frustrating.

"If someone is having a problem, they can send a PM to me with the details and we'll see if we can figure out if it's at our end or theirs.  At the moment, I'm not having any problem."

I don't have her email, so I am writing her back as a private message explaining that no one can access the forum to send her a PM.  I am forwarding Carol and Jim's email addresses, hoping she will get in touch with one of you as a representative of Rfalconcam so someone can explain the problem, and find out why our members can't access their site.

Oddly I can get to Chris and Chad's pictures that Dumsterkitty is posting on this forum.  Those thumbnails link directly to the CMNH website.  But when I try to backtrack with the URL by removing the parts of the URL that refer to the location of the photos) I get the same blank screen.

I pinged the web address www.falconcam-cmnh.org and got back its IP address, but the ping request times out.  A Tracert request to either the URL or the IP address fails as soon as it leaves my local network and heads out to the broader Internet.  To me that means the DNS servers are working ok, but there might be a problem with the ISP serving up the actual pages for the site.  That being said, I'm not well-versed in internet protocols, so I don't have a solid idea of what the problem might be.  I do know its affecting multiple computers on both home and work networks, and that clearing my browser's cookies and cached documents didn't restore my ability to access the site.  Still just getting a blank white page.

UPDATE:  on IE I'm getting an HTTP 403 error.  I think this is a problem on their side, not ours.  I can get to the main CMNH site (www.cmnh.org), but the 403 error occurs as soon as I click the Falconcam link...

I have been in contact with two of the Admins on the CMNH Forum.  I found out that if you get a blank page or Error 403... forbidden, it might be a lockout.

If someone tries unsuccessfully to log in too many times, the CMS will automatically block the IP number of the end machine to protect itself from what it perceives as an attack.

Is this only happening with people who are CMNH members trying to log in?  I told them that Jim P & Carol P were CMNH members, and was able to give them enough information so the Admin could remove the block.

Admin wrote...I don't know whether either of these people forgot their login or password or what. They tried to login multiple times with either the wrong login or the wrong password. This caused them to get locked out.  We have removed the blocks, so they can both try again. If either of them has forgotten their login or password, I can help with the login, but not the password. Carol Phillips' is CarolP.

I saw that Jim P successfully logged in after his IP was unblocked.  He told me later that he forgot his password.

Donna, Carol, Jeanne, Birdmusic, and anyone else - if this is the same issue, please send me a "personal message (http://rfalconcam.com/forum/index.php?action=pm;sa=send;u=14)" with your CMNH username.  I can get your IP address from our members list and will forward it to CMNH to unblock it.

Once they unblock your IP, you should be able to login.  If you have the correct username and don't have your password, you can click on "forget password" and reset it to enter the website.  (As MAK noted in her post, you may have to delete your cookie).

Hi! Glad everyone has gained access again.  I sent Cecilia a big thank you from all of us.

If you are not a member, I suggest you become one even if you don't intend to post.  Just don't forget your username and password. This way if there is a problem, CMNH can take care of it much quicker.

It is nice to interact with other watchers where our peregrines have taken up residency.  So glad Cleveland has a group like this.

Joyce

P.S. Donna, Birdmusic - they have no record of your being a member.  Jeanne - I'll send you confirmation of your information on file.

I'll post one, but there are four all together, and they almost look photo-shopped because Cheyenne is such a compact shape and so sharply in focus.

Simply fascinating! (And intimidating if you are the target! :scaredblue:)

Chad + Chris confirm THREE  eggs in the nest!

I told C+C that I think there are FOUR.  When I changed the zoom level on my screen, I see a tinge of rose farther back with a rounded shape in the still photo (where Cheyenne is off to the right). Then in the last photo I still see a rosy rounded form to the right of Seneca's foot.  I checked out their video that parallels the still shots, and one egg looks farther out than the others.  You can where Seneca's foot is in relation to the egg in the video, and in the still shot that's the tinge of rose I see.

Video: Seneca & Cheyenne Have Three Eggs (http://static.photobucket.com/player.swf?file=http://vid662.photobucket.com/albums/uu342/CnCSal/BPexchangeb4hatch.flv)
Does anyone see what I see?

Check out all the pics at 2010 Brookpark Rd. Bridge (http://www.falconcam-cmnh.org/e107_plugins/forum/forum_viewtopic.php?49383.last) on the CMNH forum.

Oh Boy, FOUR EGGS getting ready to hatch.  I thought it was cute...Seneca jumping the gun and bringing food to the eggs.  Maybe she was thinking, "Just in case they hatch while I am gone, I'll bring food back to the nest first before I cache it away."

We might have parallel hatching - Auntie Seneca in Ohio and her nephew Archer in Rochester.

Seneca's white spot over the cere is parted in the middle by some dark feathers...

Post by: Joyce on 22-May-10, 01:39:10 AM
This is too funny...Chad & Chris find Seneca very entertaining. And, I thought she was just doing the "Happy Dance!"

From Chad & Chris
"And here's Seneca taking off from a tree a little less gracefully than Cheyenne's dive (http://www.falconcam-cmnh.org/e107_plugins/forum/forum_viewtopic.php?49383.200) off of the pole (but very entertaining nonetheless). She was perched, then all of a sudden she got a burst of that "cat-like" energy, then started footing and biting a small stubby branch before falling sideways out of the tree still holding onto it and then releasing the branch as she was upside down..."

1.     2.     3.     4.       5.      6.     7.     8.      9.

Enjoy!
Joyce

According to Chad & Chris...

"Yep, we were very surprised when the first chick hatched at 42 days and we were even more surprised this morning when the second chick hatched at 45 days! We could tell when we got the first look at the chick here early this morning that it had just hatched (it was very pink with moist, matted downy feathers)."

A story shared today (6/2) by Elimac in Cleveland:

I went with my friend to watch the falcons at lunch today.  Seneca was sitting in the nest and only with the spotting scope on hi mag could we see the chick was sitting in front of her leaning against her.  (Aw)

Cheyenne came in to the first arch nearby with food, and softly called once.  Seneca took off out of the nest and flew to him to get the food.  Then she went back into the nest to feed.  When she was done, (and with the size of the crop on that little Warrior, not much was needed) she took the remaining food to the second arch and ate a little.  In the mean time Cheyenne flew into the nest to check on Warrior.  It was so cool, they touched beaks so sweetly.  A HUGE Awwww moment, for sure!

Our little Warrior princess is growing with leaps and bounds.  I stopped briefly yesterday AM on my drive into work, and she is already starting to flap a lot.  Seneca and Cheyenne were both on the bridge railing below the nest, about 8 feet from where we drive into work.  I plan on sharing much more about this little one, and for many years to come about Seneca.

This is an amazing comparison.  I don't think I have seen any other falcon pairs this close in size.

On June 13 Chad + Chris wrote...
"In the 12th shot, as we had thought since we first observed Cheyenne (and as Joyce has mentioned) Cheyenne appears to be a large male.  With the wings in synch you can see that their wing span is very similar (and Seneca, as the bottom bird, is actually a touch closer in this sequence)."

Check out their entire sequence of food exchange photos on CMNH (http://www.falconcam-cmnh.org/e107_plugins/forum/forum_viewtopic.php?49383.260).

Me either, they are so close in size..it's amazing!  If you zoom in you can see she is the bigger of the two but you'd be hard pressed to see that from the ground I'm thinking.

I don't believe the Department of Wildlife will band the chick.  According to Chad & Chris, they said they couldn't can't get a bucket in order to band "Warrior Princess".  No equipment was available.

Others have been asking about banding as well. I posted a couple of comments to to Chris & Chad on CMNH.

I asked if there is any possibility of someone repelling down from the bridge and if it would help if we put in a plea from Rochester?

Check to see if C+C respond on the CMNH (http://www.falconcam-cmnh.org/e107_plugins/forum/forum_viewtopic.php?49383.270) forum.

Here is a response I got from Chad & Chris posted to CNMH (http://www.falconcam-cmnh.org/e107_plugins/forum/forum_viewtopic.php?49383.280):
Joyce-- and in answer to your questions, DOW checked out this nest several times to see if they could band, but in the long run they decided not to. First, they couldn't get the snooper truck to go in from on top of the bridge, and they couldn't block off Underpass Road with a truck because it's one of the only access roads into NASA with current construction that they are doing on another road. They decided not to try repelling down, because it would require swinging in to the nest because of the cubby "roof". We certainly can appreciate the legacy of Mariah and Kaver and understand that it would be special to be able to keep track of Seneca's first youngster. Now that Warrior is at 4 weeks of age and pretty mobile, the only way that they would band is if she ends up down after fledging and we have to get her, so we'll have to wait and see.

Avian bonding?...

I feel a little sad for Warrior not having a sibling.  I'm sure she'll be just fine, but she'll miss out on all kinds of fun (and trouble) sisters and brothers get into.  Talon taggin, chasing, food tug of wars, and just plain old snuggling.  Seneca and Cheyenne will have to be not only her parents and teachers, but her partners in play and learning.

Maybe it will be like Mariah and Seneca-- Mariah spent a lot of time with Seneca because she was the last to fledge.  I hope for little Warrior, that it will be a special mom and daughter time.  It is sad that she won't be playing talon tag and having a sibling to snuggle with though.

It kind of looks like she is missing some feathers.  Is that normal.

There are periodic visits by Chad & Chris to the nest site.  I know they take 2 weeks vacation from their normal worklife to monitor so many nestsites.  Cleveland is big compared to Rochester and they have many nestsites. Watchers that live close by to a nest site will check on the falcons there.  However, in order to observe this nestsite, you have to be on NASA property. Access is restricted and no one is allowed unless they are granted permission.  I'm sure Elimac checks the site when she goes to and from work, but no one is there on a fledge watch like in Rochester.  If Warrior goes down, C+C and/or the DOW will be notified.

Hey! Those missing feathers seem perfectly symmetrical! That is so odd!!!

It's the same feather position on each side.  I know when birds molt they usually lose the same feather on each side at the same time, so feather growth is usually symmetrical. I wonder if some part of that mechanism is out of whack-either the feather didn't grow or molted prematurely or is just super slow growing.

I need to ask Mark about those missing feathers.  I know that the fact they are in sync with each other means she won't be off balance at least so that is good.  It's almost like a variation on Mariah's split wing, wonder if grandma had a similar issue when she was a young fledgling.

about Warrior she is missing the two feathers but compared to our two little ones she seems to be quite ragged from the pictures I saw earlier. I hope she is just a little slow developing

C&C have posted new photos of warrior and seneca.  Actually warrior looks pretty good, I think it's the bridge that makes her looks a bit ragged sometimes.  C&C will be out early today to check on her as in case she fledges they said, they also said her missing feathers shouldn't be a problem - and given they know their birds I trust their judgement.  Some beautiful shots up from yesterday!

YAY! I got the same information by email as posted on CMNH and thought I would share Liz' (Elimac) full post here. Finally good news after so much heartbreak in Ohio the last few days.

Warrior was on the railing of the underpass bridge this AM.

My friend Sue called me and said she thought she saw the little one on the nest ledge. She and I went over to see if we could find her, but she was not on the ledge and no one was around. We were there for about 10 minutes, and were ready to leave when both parents flew in near the railing on the north end, and there she was. Both parents were trying to encourage her to fly off that railing, but for a while she was just sitting there hollering and probably wanting to be fed. Neither parent was aggressive toward us, even though we got very close. We backed off, and the parents were swooping over her trying to encourage her to fly, but she ended up on the sidewalk. then she jumped onto the concrete barrier between the sidewalk and the road. We (mostly Sue) were trying to get traffic to slow so if she jumped into the road no one would hit her. She finally made it onto the guard rail near the buildings on the N side of Brookpark, and then went down into the dirt on the north side of the guard rail. Sue called me to come toward her, as she was near the buildings, and when I got almost to the end of the railing she said "look over" I did and Warrior was right below me on a dead branch, not 3 feet away. When she saw me she took off and flew well to either a tree very close to the bridge or to an area between the cliff and the bridge support, we could not tell, but from the way the parents were flying around and from her calls we think she was in the tree. Then one of the parents landed, and we think they brought food, for she got very quiet. We then left and went back to work.

What a nice way to start a Friday morning!

That's great story. Good watchers!!!!!  We were discussing, at our fledgewatch meeting, one's options in different kinds of situations: when to just guard them so they can rest and other people and/or cars don't hurt them or spook them (maybe they'll take off again soon), when to herd them to a safer place where they can rest or from where they can be retrieved and replaced in the scrape, and, once in a while, when it is safe to try to flush the bird. It's so scary!!!!!!

But if they are not looking for a long period of time, she might be easy to miss.  Look at us with Callidora.  We were circling the area on foot for hours and even stopped to look at the jail and still didn't see her.  If she is laying low or resting, it might be really hard to see her.

They said in the post that they weren't there during the most active times and it was hot/humid so these could all be factors too in not seeing Warrior.  Let's hope she's OK and just laying low and keeping cool.

Have not seen or heard Warrior lately, but I have not spent any time looking since a week ago Sunday. I did, however, see both adults today. Cheyenne on his normal position as lamp-post sentry and Seneca on her favorite perch on the chunk of concrete on the nest ledge. She was staring with some intensity down the river, but I could not tell what she was looking at.

I may be a Pollyanna, but I truly believe no news is good news...Warrior is alive & well until proven otherwise.

Look how many hours are spent in Rochester staring at all the usual haunts without a hint of PEFA.  Then all of a sudden, if you're lucky, you're staring at the correct corner of Xerox when a brown bump suddenly appears for a second-Callidora waking up from a nap-then right back down again.

Brookpark Rd. doesn't have anything close to the nearly full time watchers we have.  She's out there-she just hasn't been found yet.

From what I have heard, there just are not a lot of people allowed on the site (NASA owned) and some areas are prohibited.  Warrior might very well be fine but just not in an area easily accessed.  Plus, there are not a lot of watchers.  I agree with Ei.  I think no news is good news.  If the area is that restricted, and people who work there know about the birds, they would be alerted to a problem.  Still, fingers crossed!

I think a nestbox is a good idea.  Maybe those missing feathers were indicative of something on the little one.

Title: Re: Seneca Sighted at Brookpark Road Bridge with a Mate!
Post by: Paul Hamilton on 29-Jul-10, 10:32:54 AM
I'll defer to C&C's judgement, because they have spent a lot of time observing falcons in different environments, much more than I have.

However, my local site in Cabin John, MD has many similarities with the Brookpark Road Bridge site -- both are beneath major highway bridges spanning a heavily wooded rivercourse.  Between the bridge structure and all the trees, the juveniles have many places to hide.  The very hot weather gives them little incentive to fly unless they are really hungry. Usually, after I have been watching for an hour or two, one will magically appear out of nowhere and start loudly yelling for food.

I agree that there is a good chance that Warrior is dead.  However, if Warrior is alive and behaving like my juveniles, it would be easy to miss him/her, especially if observing periods were limited.

Paul

I agree Paul. You can spend hours waiting for a couple minutes of activity. Right time, right place.

Title: Re: Seneca Sighted at Brookpark Road Bridge with a Mate!
Post by: Carol P. on 29-Jul-10, 11:15:29 AM
I also agree with Paul.  Although it doesn't look good for Warrior, unless you spend hours watching, you have a really good chance of NOT seeing a falcon.  Even here in Rochester, A&B are currently visiting the nestbox, but Callidora is not.  If you kept watching the nestsite area, you wouldn't see much of Callidora at all.

Title: Re: Seneca Sighted at Brookpark Road Bridge with a Mate!
Post by: Carol P. on 29-Jul-10, 11:21:55 AM
The only way to be sure that Warrior was no longer with us is if one of the watchers at Brookpark stayed the whole day and observed the adults.  During the day, Warrior would probably make herself know, when she was hungry.  Keeping the adults in sight at all times can be a hard thing to do though.

When a fledgling is lost, the 1st Watcher rule is to observe the parents.

Title: Re: Seneca Sighted at Brookpark Road Bridge with a Mate!
Post by: jeanne on 29-Jul-10, 11:29:10 AM
Also, if areas around that nest are blocked to observers, Warrior could be there and no one would know.

Title: Re: Seneca Sighted at Brookpark Road Bridge with a Mate!
Post by: huddiecat on 29-Jul-10, 01:23:15 PM
I agree with Paul, et. al. unless one sits for an extended period, it is difficult to make a solid conclusion about the presence/absence of Warrior.  I am currently observing a fledgling crow we released last Thursday.  He is in a small area, and I still do not always see him!  Yesterday during one of my observation periods I located him by noticing a blinking eye in the leaves, otherwise I would never have seen the little guy!

As Carol said watching the adults for a period of time would also give a better indication.  I think they could use about 5 or 6 watchers watching for an entire day, and there are still areas not accessible for watching.

As Paul mentioned it has been HOT and we all know how inactive they can be when it is hot!

Suzanne

I haven't given up on Warrior yet, maybe because I am hoping he is still alive for Seneca and Cheyenne!

As I've said before, I will continue to believe that Warrior is OK until proven otherwise.

I know she's not banded, but there haven't been any reports (yet) of a downed/deceased unbanded juvie peregrine in the area.  I'm well aware of what the chances are, and I certainly respect C&C's opinion, but I've never been one to speculate about anything.  Without facts it's all a guessing game.  Maybe an educated guess, but a guess none the less.

That's my story & I'm sticking to it.

I wasn't around here during the days of M & K but I love reading the stories about them..
There is something so touching about these birds who are "birds of prey" but so gentle too.
The wisdom of the ages is in their eyes :-)

I was looking today on the CMNH Forum to see how Seneca and Cheyenne are doing and this is the report from yesterday:

I have not seen the falcons on the bridge at all since early January, and this morning there were ring-billed gulls sitting on the lights the falcons normally sit on. Plus, today was the first time I saw the RR Eagle fly by my window at work. I'm concerned about this pair now.

In looking back, the last posting of a sighting of Seneca was Dec. 20th and Cheyenne was seen and photographed on Jan. 3rd.
Hope everything is alright with them.

I wouldn't be too worried.  They could be nearby.  We don't see Falcons on the Time Square bldg very often.  They tend to either migrate or move away from a nest site.  Hopefully there will be some sightings soon.

Saw Cheyenne here by the nest briefly on Saturday with a good-sized crop. Stayed for awhile down by the river, then went up top for awhile-- no appearances by Seneca during this time.

Joyce-- we'll still be able to monitor no matter what they do with underpass road, although we may have to be further back from the nest or observing from down below.

First shot is from down by the river, and the second shot from up top...

C & C posted pics of the female tonight on the CMNH Forum.  They question whether it's Seneca because there's a mysterious black stripe around the rt leg band where Seneca has a silver band. Some characteristics do look like Seneca but no confirmation yet on who this is with Cheyenne. Any thoughts?

I looked at the pictures. You can see silver above and below the black. It looks like tape. Could she have been in someones rehab? I can't tell if its her or not. I was comparing pics from this past fall and now lot of similarities and there are differences but it could be camera angles too. Hope they can get better pics of the green and black bands only way to tell for sure. Unless she holds up a sign. :-[

I was thinking the same thing, BC, and I also thought I saw similarities but then differences in comparison pics.  We'll just have to wait for an identity confirmation from C & C.

Confirmation on the CMNH site that the female with Cheyenne is not Seneca (lots of postings and pics of the female on that site now).  The female has been positively identified -from Harrisburg, PA. 2009.  The tape on the right leg over the silver federal band was green-used for identification purposes at banding time. I wonder what happened to Seneca-hope she's OK. :(

And we'll end with some various shots of the new female. They were still keeping their distance from each other when perched today, although they were vocalizing to one another and they did fly around together a little bit. No visits to the nest site by this female that we've seen at this point.

Just want to say that we have really enjoyed watching Seneca at this nest site over the past year, and we were glad to have all of the New Yorkers so interested in following Seneca. Although we're glad Cheyenne recruited another female, we're sorry to see Seneca gone from this site, as she gave us many great moments and memories here in a short time.  from C & C

new female from Harrisburg 2009
Green girl from Harrisburg. 2009

Today we were able to read the bands. She is from Harrisburg, PA (2009) with the band numbers 49/AE (unnamed). We contacted the peregrine coordinator from PA and he confirmed that she is their bird and that green tape was used to help ID her at fledge time.

Some falcons have been known to 'vacation' during winter months - not sure where they go but it has happened and then they turn back up.  She may also have decided to find a new nest site after a failed nest site last year.  Although the area was nice, eggs rolling around on concrete is not ideal and maybe she decided to try her luck elsewhere.  I'm hoping that is all it was.  We have had falcons abandon nest sites/mates and turn up elsewhere so take heart and don't give up - she's got good strong genes!

I am disappointed and sad :'( that I may not see Seneca again.  I'm so glad that I was able to see Seneca in person with Cheyenne and little Warrior.  I was so enamored  with Seneca and Cheyenne last year.  Seneca is my profile picture...she is one beautiful falcon!  What a bonus to have all of the wonderful photos from Chad & Chris in 2010.

Perhaps she is off wandering like her sister Quest has done for over two years. With the successful re-population of peregrine falcons, it does seem to be the way of the new falcon generation.

Archers coming its just that his time table is later than what we are used to with Kaver. Both years he showed up around the same time (I remember being worried last year) he came back the same day my TV's came home and they are not back yet either. I too think Mr T is cute so he needs to go and find a lady of his own. I really don't want him and Archer to fight. He could go up to the lady on the crane by the lake.

Seneca  I hope is just touring the lakes maybe she also likes the taste of shore birds or whatever it is Quest eats up there. Little warrior was not quite right (feathers not developed correctly) maybe Seneca thinks the problem is nest location (or Cheyenne) So she is checking out all her options.

And we don't know  where Seneca was before she was seen at that nest site.  It was a failed site-- she lost little Warrior and the other little one that was disposed of.  Hopefully she will be seen again.  She has been taught by the best-- Mariah took extra care with her.

I would like to think that Seneca has moved on to a better nest site.  These Pefas are pretty smart about that.  Bad nest site and loss of young probably sent her on her way.  I truly hope she shows up at a safer nest site sometime soon. - Carol P.

I would like to think that Seneca has moved on to a better nest site.  These Pefas are pretty smart about that.  Bad nest site and loss of young probably sent her on her way.  I truly hope she shows up at a safer nest site sometime soon. - Carol P.
Given Seneca's great genes, I also believe that she has moved on to a better nest site and better life! I believe --  as Carol does-- that we will see Seneca again.  Smart  gal!

Well Cheyenne and Green Girl (from Harrisburg) have an egg. Posted on the CMNH forums.

I wish them well and wonder where Seneca is!  :(

Bad news reported about Seneca's former mate Cheyenne:

Just received some bad news about this site. After just posting the latest pics here, we checked our e-mail and were notified by Jenny from DOW that Cheyenne was brought in last night to the Back to the Wild rehabilitation facility in Castalia, Ohio after he was found with an injured wing in the parking lot of the Cleveland Hopkins Airport. He is supposed to get x-rays tomorrow, so hopefully we'll know more soon. We were at this site early this morning, and GG was on the eggs-- didn't stay very long, as we headed out to check some other sites for hatches. We're only a little over a week from the hatch date, but we'll have to see what GG does. We'll check back here tomorrow!

That is too bad about Cheyanne; I wish him well.  It is so good that he was found and is in safe hands!  We know what rehab can do for the falcons.
When is the last time Seneca was sighted?  I think it was earlier this winter?
Does anyone have any info about her?

Cheyenne update today:

Today's update on Cheyenne... Laura called after his visit to Dr. Lindstrom. He found a slight fracture of the corocoid (collar bone), which is usually not a difficult problem to heal, per Laura. However, he had a very high white blood cell count, which Laura said could be a possible sign of some poison in his system. He also had greenish defecation, which she said is an indication of a liver problem, so they're going to do a more specialized blood panel to determine more. He's on antibiotics now, and Laura said that the prognosis for releasability is good if he recovers from his sickness.

As for GG, we were there this morning and she appears to be giving up. She didn't incubate, but stayed around the nest site. She walked in to the nest cubby and began picking at one of the eggs. We couldn't tell if she broke the egg or if it had already been broken, but she began eating some of it. She then picked up the broken egg, and with yolk dripping out she carried it out of the nest to a tree. Since the egg had that much yolk in it and we didn't see a formed eyass (which there should be with only about a week to go until the hatch date) that egg wasn't any good anyway. This may have even been the egg that they inconsistently incubated for the first week or two.

The quail was still on the railing this morning. Kim-- in our experience, peregrines have not rejected quail in rehab., although they will sometimes refuse to eat when they first enter into a captive environment. Quail is actually considered very well accepted by peregrines. If we could have gotten it into one of their cache spots under the bridge, that probably would have been the best place to put it and there would have been a better chance of her taking it.

I wonder with the elevated white blood cell count and the green feces. If there is something in the environment at that nest site. That is what is making Cheyenne ill and maybe caused the problems that little Warrior had last year (he did not seem developed correctly IE feathers etc) before he disappeared. Which maybe why our girl left (or it made her so sick that she....I don't even want to go there.)  :'(

I wondered about the site also. One little one died early and then sweet Warrior. I am hopeful about Seneca though.  She was the last to fledge and Mariah did a lot of flying with her.  I think she is tough.  She may, like Quest, be searching for a nestbox.

Posted by Chad & Chris on CMNH  (http://www.falconcam-cmnh.org/e107_plugins/forum/forum_viewtopic.php?57137.last) forum.  Perhaps a reason we never heard from Seneca again.

"GG has been less consistently around the bridge over the last few days when we've checked, but was there with a full crop this evening. We can't tell if the two eggs are still up there-- they aren't in view if they are.

The news on Cheyenne is good-- he's responding very well to the antibiotics and his defecation is back to normal. He's eating well and is energetic again, per Laura. The blood panel ruled out a rodenticide, but the poison that was in his system is still unknown. Laura feels that if he continues to recover as well as he has he should be releaseable within a couple weeks.

Joyce-- you're right that the nest area makes them vulnerable. DOW really did want to get a nest tray into that cubby, but it was a conflict with the airport. We didn't get around to posting this, but we found out that they had been trapping and relocating raptors at the airport in an effort to prevent airplane/bird strikes. No way of knowing, but it could even explain how Seneca disappeared at such an odd time. They were transporting trapped peregrines all the way to Toledo (over 100 miles away). Laura met with airport officials and there is now an agreement in place that all trapped birds from the airport will be assessed (and identified, if banded) at the MRC. The resident peregrines would not be relocated if they get trapped. However, it was after that meeting that Cheyenne was transported out to Back to the Wild, so hopefully the protocol will work more efficiently in the future."

You would also think that 'by law' they should be required to record the band numbers - isn't part of the reason we band them so we can identify them?  I can't believe they would do that, wonder how many other pairs have been separated like that.

I pray she is safe and well.

I just read the CMNH Forum post about this.  I'm so glad that Cheyenne will be OK and releasable but my greatest thought is about our Seneca.  I've always been hopeful that she's alright somewhere but to think that she was trapped and relocated without being identified is so sad.  If they had just written down a band number so we knew.  :(

I am speechless.  I am trying to look at the bright side.  Chances are they trapped our sweetie and maybe it gets her out of an area that might not be healthy.

That said, what the heck were they thinking to not record bands.  Is that even legal for the to do this trapping?

Just so long as she was relocated. I wouldn't put it past these so called people to do something worse. Of course they didn't write down band numbers. Then there would be evidence of what they were doing. This being legal is highly questionable in my book.

That was my point, Toledo is not that far from Cleveland as the falcon flies. Quest has shown us that. Mariah and Milton have shown us their wish to go home after rehab no matter where they are released. I worry that those people did something else and just said the birds were relocated.  :'(

Peregrines are still listed as "endangered" in New York.  Are they in Ohio?  At the very least, they are listed as "threatened".  I cannot believe this is legal.  Has C&C or anyone in Ohio reported this to, I don't know, someone that can check into it?

This just seems so wrong in so many ways.   :(

Appreciate your continued interest in Cheyenne, Joyce! Been talking to Laura all week, but things have been very busy for her and us with fledges. Don't know if you caught it, but we've had to pick up five juvs so far at some of the Cuyahoga Co. sites, and we're trying to fit in time to watch an exciting new nest in the Cuyahoga Valley National Park with a female hatched at the TT in '09 (Strike-- from Buckeye and SW's last clutch).

What we do know about Cheyenne is that the vet thought he might have been in the flight cage a bit too soon and aggravated his slight corocoid fracture and previously dislocated shoulder. So, he was wrapped again and put into a smaller cage to heal.

I'm sure Liz will be able to fill you in on more details with the help of her friend who volunteers at the MRC, but we'll also post when we find out any additional info. Thanks Liz for getting and posting the info. C & C

Here is the latest from "Elimac" aka Liz:

"Just got this from Glenn:

Hi All,
Well, after a number of not so great weeks, Cheyenne has made a turn for the better. Turns out he just needed a little contrarian logic. Traditionally, injured birds need a place that’s relatively quiet and dark to get better. They stress out easily – especially high strung species like falcons – and, just like in people, excess stress can hinder the healing process.
Turns out Cheyenne is a real sun worshipper. We went the other direction and moved him to a more well lit enclosure where he could see the sunshine and the sky everyday and he has been really perking up ever since. We have a couple of really big birds in the big flight cages that are due for release soon and hope to get Cheyenne moved over so he can get more exercise.
It’s one of the real frustrations of working with patients who can’t talk. Sometimes you have to feel your way around a little bit to figure out what’s really bothering them.
Cheers,
Glenn.

I replied it was because Cheyenne used to spend so much time sitting on top of the light post above the nest cubby."

New update on Seneca's old mate.

"Cheyenne has been doing very well. He’s got the biggest flight cage at the Center to fly around. Laura has had some concerns that he doesn’t quite “look right” so he’s still with us. Laura is one of the top experts on Peregrines, so I would definitely trust her judgment. Unfortunately, because Peregrines are so territorial, they can only be released during migration seasons. I have not asked the questions, but assume that means he’ll be spending the winter with us."

Asked Laura for an update and she said that she plans to really start pushing him in January and will aim for a late Feb/early March release. Hoping for good things for Cheyenne!

I hope Cheyenne will make a full recovery and be releasable, but since he isn't quite ready, I'm glad that he will staying at the Medina Raptor Center for the winter.

Thanks Alison-  I also hope he will be OK for release.  I read that GG has found a new mate since Cheyenne's injury.  Life does go on and I'll always wonder whatever happened to our Seneca.

Update on Cheyenne! Chad & Chris

Thought I'd start a new thread, since we don't know if Cheyenne will end up back at the Brookpark nest site.

Stopped out to the MRC to talk with Laura about her upcoming program (side note: she'll be doing a talk on peregrines for the Rocky River Birds of Prey Weekend at the Nature Center on February 5th), and we checked out Cheyenne together as well.

The staff has been exercising him in his cage daily, breaking down food rewards so that he's worked four times a day. She's thinking he's looking good for release in the late winter, if all continues to go well. He did a few extra laps while we were in his cage-- looked good in flight and landing, and no sign of labored breathing after the workout. Here are a couple shots of him that I snapped before we left...

Thanks Kris G

Just checked CMNH and C&C have posted an update to GG and Titan and Cheyenne!!

Checked here Wednesday morning and GG was at the bridge with Titan. They weren't perched close together and appeared to be in an early stage of bonding. GG flew up near the nest ledge as Titan was perched inside the bridge above the nest-- she appeared unfamiliar with the bridge, as she tried and missed some unusual landing spots inside the bridge, and then she flew up and perched on a beam in the I-90 Bridge that runs parallel to the Hilliard Road Bridge. Titan vocalized, and flew to a couple different perches while GG stayed put. He then flew out over the valley, repeatedly sounding the alarm call and appearing to be driving out an intruding raptor below the treeline. He flew back up to the light post several times and repeated his defensive jaunts, and then stayed out. Wasn't able to stay to see if he tried bringing in food for GG, but will be there on our next off days. Meanwhile, no sightings of McKees while here.

To thicken the plot, Laura Jordan plans to release Cheyenne very soon, so it could be interesting if he returns to the area. BTW, this was the first place we were able to ID Cheyenne as a subadult male before he was driven out by Titan and moved on to nest with Seneca at the Brookpark site.

Fly free, Bandit!  You led a legendary and long life, and leave behind a wonderful legacy of peregrines to follow in your wing-path!   Cheyenne was just loosed to the skies this week, and many of your offspring are  soaring the skies.  Thank you for  the joy you brought to many who followed your life, and sympathy to your lifelong followers at CMNH and Chad and Chris.

Or with any luck he might go home to mama since he was released not far from home.  Now that his dad is gone perhaps he could take over his site.

You kinda have to wonder what she is thinking? Is she looking for him? Who knows what goes on in their minds. Feel bad for her or any animal that loses a mate.

Ohhh Boy!!!!

CMNH Forum

On to most recent news—today we witnessed an all-out battle between GG and McKees at this site! It was horrifying and incredible at the same time! We thought it was GG perched in the inside arch of the bridge until both Titan and GG returned to the bridge and the fight ensued. The two females wrestled around back inside the bridge and all we could see were wing flaps and some feathers flying until they tumbled out while locked together in one another's grasp! They fell to a shallow spot at the river’s edge underneath the bridge and engaged in battle, continuing to wrestle, taloning one another and biting with their beaks while vocalizing loudly. Then they broke apart only to reengage on the rocks across the river.

McKees finally broke away again and flew down the river as both GG and Titan chased after her. We walked the trail along the river, but saw no sign of them. When we returned GG was perched in a tree with no visible signs of injury. In our pics we could see that McKees appeared to have a wound on her chest where she was bitten by GG, and she also seemed to have some bleeding in her mouth. Since we both took shots as they were battling we have quite a few pics to go through, but we’ll get them posted soon. We just thought forum members would want the current update so we decided to post the information without pics. We’re both working tomorrow, but we’ll each have some time separately to check the site before we work, and we’ll post any additional updates as available.

Thanks Kris for sending this. Very scary, I mean really!  :(

Note* This didn't happen at the Brookpark Rd Bridge site but at the Hilliard Rd Bridge Site where Titan has been the male for sometime.

Glad to see that Titan and GG are together again this year!  I often think about Seneca and wonder whatever happened to her and I also have wondered how her mate, Cheyenne is doing.  To my knowledge, I don't think he was seen again after his release from rehab.

wasn't there a report of a falcon being "relocated" up there right at the time she disappeared. I personally think they did something else because they weren't up front about it.(I'm thinking from the airport)

I had read that birds were caught at the airport there and relocated but nobody confirmed it, if I remember right. Seneca disappeared right around Christmas and GG appeared not too long after, becoming Cheyenne's new mate.  She laid eggs, Cheyenne got hurt, went to rehab for a long time, GG abandoned the eggs, site and moved on. I always wondered if there was a battle between the females but we'll never know.
