Title: Quest and Her Mate Still at Pickering Power Plant
Post by: Joyce on 11-Oct-10, 12:19:36 AM
Mak and I took advantage of the holiday weekend and took a leisurely drive up to Pickering to see if we could find Quest.

In Mak's words... "We saw the Burlington falcons to start our little adventure. Beautiful area and I got pics. Next stop Toronto and Rhea Mae. We didn't see any falcons but I got pics of where the nestbox is and all the surrounding buildings. Wow what a city with all it's skyscrapers and glass. Joycie took me up to the 43rd floor of the Sheraton so I got to see the falcons birds eye view. It was a bit scary cuz I am afraid of heights but as usual the falcons compel me to do things I didn't think I could or would do!  Out of there and on to Pickering where within a few minutes I spotted a falcon, then another one showed up. They acted like a pair echupping and flying with each other. We had about 2 hrs. or so of watching them before they left us."

We definitely had two falcons on what looked like a balloon-like structure from our view point. The water tower was a long distance away on the south side of the Power Plant. We are pretty sure based on size that the male was on top of the water tower, and Quest was on the ring at the base. I don't know if I was seeing things after going through so many pictures, but I thought I saw an antenna in 2 photos out of over 300 shots taken.  At dusk the two falcons took off flying and echupping.  Wonderful sounds!  One flew north and we found the other on the stills.  That was the closest location of the day.  We got so excited to see the sun setting on the falcon.  As we watched and watched, we couldn't see any antenna, and none in the photos.  So Quest alluded us again from getting clear pictures of her.

Tomorrow is another day, and we will be up early hoping she will be there again with her mate.

Attached are 3 photos from our late Sunday watch.

#1 Both falcons together on water tower - one at top and one on the ring at base (99.9% sure it's Quest)

#2 !00% enlarged photo - am I seeing an antenna?

#3 Quest's mate.  Very dark looking Canadian tiercel.

I don't know but I almost think I see an antenna in the 2nd pic Joyce. I circled where I saw it. You have to stare at the pic for a few seconds and then the antenna will appear. For real! Good job ladies. Maybe today she will fly over you for a better shot.

This is where I see the antenna, the black line. Can't draw a straight line as I am a lefty but use a righty mouse!  :stupid:

As soon as you did the red circle, it was visable - went to Joyce's and there it was plain as day.  Go into your settings, mouse, and reverse your buttons.

Um, I can't use a lefty mouse, that's the problem. I write, bowl and eat lefty....everything else is righty...like I said... :stupid: Ed's the same, he writes lefty, uses a mouse lefty but does everything else righty.

Hi All!

We didn't want to keep you in suspense, so here is a celebration poem by MAK and a photo of Quest who hasn't been seen like this in over two years.

There once was a falcon born from the best,
Who wore a transmitter attached to a vest.

After a few weeks, they named her Quest;
She went to Cape Cod, then headed Northwest.

If you think I am kidding or acting in jest,
Just ask her followers, they'll tell you the rest.

Thanks, Joyce and MAK!  The last time I saw a photo of her she was a lot browner.  She has come a long way since her Nantucket days and looks really great in adult plumage -- not as dark as Rhea Mae, more like her Mom.

So nice to finally see a picture showing her antenna.  It was really frustrating when Shaky, Carrie, Kathy O and I visited awhile ago and found Quest at the power plant with her mate, but were unable to get pics.  Good work Joyce & MAK.

Post by: MAK on 12-Oct-10, 02:54:57 PM

Hi everybody!
First off I want to thank my friend Joyce for taking me along on this journey with her. Let me just say it's a trip I'll never forget!
We started at the Burlington bridge to get a falcon fix (as Joyce put it). It didn't take long to find them and we didn't stay long cuz it was already mid afternoon.
On to Toronto hoping to catch a glimpse of Rhea Mae and Tiago. Again we didn't stay long and never saw them but Joyce took me up to the top floor of the Sheraton to get a look at what they see. Magnificent view despite my fear of heights!
Next stop...Pickering Nuclear Power Plant in Ontario,Canada.  In less than 5 minutes I spotted a falcon on the very top of the white water tank! It took alot to convince Joyce cuz she couldn't see it at first. Then awhile later she spotted the second falcon flying in and landing on the rail at the bottom of the tank. A few minutes later they were flying together and echupping! We were high fiving and cheering for we knew one of them was Quest! We now had to get a pic of that transmitter. Quest took off northbound and her mate went to a still where we watched him 'til we left for the night.
Monday (Thanksgiving in Canada) brought us the thrill of seeing the transmitter and antenna. We found her on the communications tower where I could see the antenna with my binocs but Joyce could not. I just kept saying click away with that long lens cuz it's going to show up on the computer when you download the pics from your camera. All of a sudden she flew off the tower at first heading south then turning around and right at us. I yelled Joyce she's coming over get that camera ready! She had it attached to a relic tripod she fished out of the garbage somewhere. As Quest flew above us I turned back to see Joyce holding her camera and tripod up in the air clicking away!  What a trooper! Mission accomplished...sight and pic confirmation to go along with the satellite data.  We were jumping up and down, high fiving, fist bumping, yelling WOOHOO and generally acting like a couple of kids.lol
We stopped at a Tim Horton's on the way out of town to pick the best photo of Quests' transmitter to post right away rather than making everyone wait 'til we got home. We decided the poem should be in blue (the color of her right band).
We spoke to security guards on about 6 different occasions. All of them were very nice and interested in the falcons. We even had a local police officer stop by and chat with us.
On a final note... I can't begin to tell all of you how elated I was to see Quest live. Just thinking about this brings happy tears. Up until now I had only seen her on camera at the Kodak tower when I first started following the Rochester falcons as strictly a lurker. Guess there's alot to be said about breaking out of lurkdom!

Keep your eyes to the sky!  MAK

We are glad that we had something to share with all of you . . . and, thankful for the ground work laid by Carol P, Kathy O, Carrie, Shaky and the transmitter readings.  We saw the metal ladder where Carol P got a pic of the male, but neither falcon landed there.  We now have some favorite spots to share, so when the next group goes up to see Quest, they will know where to look as well.

It's been a real effort on everyone's part, but I think we have to thank Quest (the most) for finally settling down in one spot long enough!!

I've been bombarded with work and meetings for the past 2 days. I am still sifting through my pics, so I haven't been able to pull an album together yet.  Because of the drab gray skies, the quality of the pictures is not the best, and they have to be edited.

I sent Jess a couple more photos to add to the Imprints post -- Quest on the communication tower, and Quest flying overhead when she came out to greet her fans.

Joyce
