Crows and falcons already coexist in city

The writer of Saturday's letter suggesting the use of falcons to rid Rochester of its crows seems to be unaware of two points. First, the crows gather in Rochester as darkness falls and leave early in the morning, whereas falcons hunt during daylight hours. Second, we already have falcon presence in Rochester. At least one peregrine falcon, Beauty, is seen downtown on a daily basis, often pausing on or around the Mercury statue a couple of blocks from where the crows gather. Her appearances are reported on Facebook (Rfalconcam) and at rfalconcam.com.

Can you imagine releasing a non-resident peregrine in downtown Rochester? OMG!  I wouldn't want to see that battle!

Thank goodness Diana posted that.  They used to use peregrine kakking sounds to rid the birds from the Liberty pole in rochester so that might have been what the person was thinking about.

I think they should leave the crows alone.There are people downtown that I think should be ousted and I would prefer that to the crows.  Just saying :rolleyes:

I saw lightening and heard thunder seconds after in this mini blizzard we're having! It was supposed to be sunny and nice today. I never saw the sun!!!  :snow2:

I was driving home from the vet's which is about 10 minutes away from home, 15 if there is traffic.  It was sprinkling but it looked very dark as I looked ahead.  Then it started snowing-- blowing and very misty.  The weatherman said there was thunder and lightning too!

And we're getting 51 degrees! WORSE Winter EVER!!

I'd rather have the winter we are having than the one that Europe has been having.

That's what I'm thinking as the falcon is large....but I don't know her well to say.  I only know her from the photos the girls took not close up on cam like Beauty.

Likely whoever was on the main cam-after leaving the cam the trajectory was toward that ledge.  Not a bit of leg to be seen...drat!

On the refresh whoever was on the cam was gone I quickly cycled through the other views and got the same sighting on Cam 2 as you and then refresh and gone again.

She is spending a long time on the Main cam, just like Beauty did.  Is there a heat source coming from the cam that makes it desirable to perch there in cold weather?

I don't know that it's particularly warmer-that housing has collected it's share of snow over the years.  I personally think it's just an excellent perch with good sight lines around the building.

New version of ROC the Day as Canada gets invaded by 7 ladies with funny looking money, bizarre licence plates and foreign accents!!! LOL Thanks to all the girls that came up, we had a great time. I think the highlight for me was the look on MAK's face when Cheyenne coughed up the pellet in her hand!! Actually, there were too many highlights to count. Thanks for coming everyone and I hope when the nice weather comes, we can do it again. We'll have longer days, warmer weather and maybe have a picnic!

Probably the most striking difference is Beauty's chest is peachy beige colored and Unity's is white.

No, not much difference.  And Unity's chest isn't as bright white as, say, Archer.  This is really the first we've seen her this close, so it will take a while to pick out more unique marks.

Mystery male is back and Unity is bowing low to him again trying to entice him...  After Unity left, he went to the edge of the nest box.  I always feel bad for the new guy...he's hesitant and then by the time he feels safe, the resident male comes home and he gets turfed.

Thanks for all the coverage!  Cam is blocked at work so exciting to see what is going on!

That's twice this morning Unity brought in prey - 6:55 and 9:44. Wonder if it was the same or two different catches?  Is this courting behavior on the part of the female? 

heh..well usually the male will bring the female 'food gifts' as part of the courtship and perhaps he did but that part was off cam.  It's believed that this food gifting shows the female that he can and will provide for her and their offspring.

She will sometimes leave or share the leftovers with him as well.  It's hard to get the whole picture on the cam sometimes.

Someone has been on the edge of the NB for at least 20 minutes that I've been keeping an eye on it.  Is it U or the unknown male?

Sometimes it is really hard to tell.  Based on the size, I think it is Unity on the edge of the platform.

I'm glad we placed a roof above that camera. I don't recall A or B ever perching there, but these 2 would have bent the camera downward by now if we hadn't.

These 2 go where AB didn't for  sure!

Makes it interesting for the Watchers when we try to find them.  We have to check EVERYWHERE for them, although we are beginning to learn some of their favorite spots now.

We saw him at the box before we did Unity and I think we saw him inside exploring that weekend too or I may be confusing him with Unity..it's a bit of a blur now.

He's likely smart enough to not want to get cornered in there with Unity, she's a big girl  :lol:

There's a girl who works at OCSR and she is on the stream chat now. She's on the 11th floor S side and she has a great view of Mercury, nest box and Crossroads bdg. She can't see the falcons when they land on OCSR but she can see the feathers flying. I asked her to join the forum. She's going to try from work!! Donna, I am not a ROC native.  I have come to love this area, and next time you are up here, we will go to Eastman House if you have not visited there before.  I am thinking that maybe you have visted the Eastman House.  It is gorgeous, and he MADE Rochester what it is.   It should be on the list when people visit here...along with Wegmans!

Clear packing tape. Duck tape doesn't hold up well to Rochester weather.

This piece of tape needed to be longer to wrap over the side of the camera housing. It will probably come off soon. No big deal. It's only keeping the camera wires neat. We'll apply a longer piece on banding day. (knock on wood)

Not much duck tape will actually stand up to in the long run, let alone a windy perch in the winter.  Its reputation exceeds it.

It works well on keeping my tux together.

I have a question - why is it so difficult to see U's bands?    Is it because she is large, or more feathered?   Does she sit lower down on her legs?   Trying to figure it out.  She is a large bird!

Margaret - I think it's because she's all squatty and poofed up in the cold.  It is extremely cold up there right now.   I'm not sure how much bigger Unity is than Beauty.  We always thought Beauty was bigger than Mariah and Mariah was a big girl.  :-)

I thought the same thing!  Unity has to be loving this scrape.  This is the Waldorf-Astoria after all the pigeon poop piles at KP!    She is just a young 'un, and this is her first time 'movin' on up!  I just don't want anything to happen to Beauty or to Unity.   We all just want them to live and multiply in peace, love and harmony.  Is that too much to ask?

Today I was able to have the streaming video on while at work, and usually listen with headphones.  I lay them on my desk when i am busy with something.  Someone came by, heard Unity, and thought I had a mouse under my desk.

After I explained and showed her the online cam, she said Unity was a real "chatty cathy".  I thought, yep that's her....CHATTY-U. LOL

So funny that you post this, Joyce.    I will turn on the streaming video when I can (at work), but I usually turn it on in BIG SCREEN -- projected through computer on to overhead screen in my classroom  - during my study hall.  Many of the students recall having watched the Kodak cams  "when I was in second grade or maybe third"...and some of these kids are my  seniors now!  I am always amazed at how many kids know about the falcons and have watched them at some time in their educational experience.   They love hearing the stories about the falcons, and I have many pictures of all of them in the room...along with my own birds.  Today, I turned on the streaming video and sound, and was listening as I was ending my day.   A former student came in...and we left my room.  All had been pretty quiet,but as we were  walking down this LONG hall, I could hear Ms Unity start her whine, and it was loud!  All the way down the hall, her whining was following us, and I was thinking..."ok, what is everybody thinking hearing this...if you don't know what it is, it could sound a little strange."  I do find that it is a wonderful experience sharing the falcons with not only my students, but also with my colleagues at work...who have come to know the falcons.   

Margaret - Thanks for letting us know that you are sharing all of this with the children in your school.  We try to make this a big part of Rfalconcam.  Educating children.  Making them aware of species in danger.  Hoping that they will gain a respect for all creatures and nature.  Thank you!   :clap:

I am always amazed at the number of school kids who are familiar with the falcons!  I spoke with a friend's daughter from Geneseo and the kids used to watch Mariah and Kaver on the cameras!

Thank you, MAK and Carol.  You have that right!   It is important to educate our young 'uns about nature and respect for its beauty.   You are right, MAK,  about 'puters, and phones, and the next new thing and how important it seems to be to the young 'uns.  WE know  it is all about being human, and recognizing we share this big, blue, ball with many other creatures big and small, and winged, and feathered.  That is the beauty of this site.   I may not get out on the streets and chase the birds as you all do  (I am SOO jealous) but I  recognize its importance -- not only because it brings me joy -- but that I can share with others who may perhaps find that spark within themselves.   So thank YOU!

I don't think her whining scares him, I'm wondering if her whining is a communication that she is not available and that this nest box is taken???  Of course, who can tell.

In the time I've seen them together:

He brings food and I'm pretty sure she is taking it.  Can't blame her there.  Free food.

He does all kinds of fancy flying for her.  She watches, but doesn't fly with him.

When she was on the Mercury statue, he would make his approach maybe hoping that she would be receptive.  I have yet to see her lift her tail the way we've seen Beauty with Archer and Mariah with Kaver before copulation.

They do defend territory together.  I've seen this a few times, including yesterday.

We do know that Pefa pairs usually become bonded pairs for life, whether with a particular falcon or a territory, is unknown.  I do truly believe she considers Archer to be her bonded mate.

When Cabot-Sirocco did not return, Mariah took awhile to warm up to and accept Kaver as her mate.  She may have acted very like Unity right now. 

This is all just thinking out loud.  Trying to make sense of what's going on.   :confused:

I think your deductions are quite logical Carol.  No harm in keeping this guy around and at arms length either just in case the worst happens and Archer doesn't make it home, backup that feeds you is always good  ;)

I've been told that a female will not chase out a male while she is waiting for the return of her mate.  Like you said, they need to keep their options open, just in case their mate does not return.  and the gifts of food are always good!  lol

I'll start with this fabulous catch Donna alerted us to from this morning!

This is my personal opinion, so take it for what it's worth...I think Beauty is "going through the motions" of what her body is telling her she should be doing at this point in the year even though she doesn't have eggs to brood.

Someone (MAK?) found an article about an apparently infertile female doing something very similar.  Not saying Beauty's infertile-just didn't lay eggs & her hormones are out of synch.

She's acting normal the rest of the time, so...something we're learning about as we go.

DotCa’s Mate Has An Egg

Back on April 2, we reported part of the ongoing saga of the Rochester NY falcons. At that point, DotCa a male  from the Etobicoke Sunlife Centre,hatched in 2010, had taken over as the resident male with Unity as his mate. Shortly after a tragic accident occured when Unity was struck by a car and was killed. Beauty the former resident female was released from rehab almost concurrent to this and she took over the nestbox again. At first it seemed DotCa wanted her out of the box,but they came to accept one another and have now produced their first egg! DotCa has been trying to nest with another female at a 2nd site in the Brighton area of Rochester too. So far it doesnt appear there are eggs there.

Everyone from the Sun Life family of staff and watchers is excited to hear that DotCa has made it and is starting a family! We will be sure to follow he and Beauty and keep everyone informed as to their progress.

Now that I look back at DotCa in the nest box yesterday, I wonder if he knew Beauty was ready to lay an egg.  He may have been checking for it.

Poor B.  Archer did the same last year, if I remember right-didn't show up for hours to see the first egg because he was with Unity.  :(

Our first egg sitting standoff of the season!  :clap:

Had the pleasure of watching DC figure out egg-sitting this morning - it was amusing and amazing! Hopefully, someone started recording on Ustream, as I was so busy laughing, I forgot to capture the first couple of images! This episode begins at 6:30 a.m, but the real action starts at 6:46.

DC flew to top of cam 4, then immediately into the nestbox. Beauty departed immediately.

After standing over the eggs, he rolled a couple of them around, then flew out and sat on the main cam looking at them.

He disappeared for a couple minutes, then landed out on the corner, and walked the rail back into the nestbox, to figure out exactly what to do with these round things.

First, he assembled them in a relatively close proximity.

@ carly and dumpsterkitty - i'm glad you enjoyed it - it's my only way to be a 'watcher' from 40 miles away...

DC entered the box at 8:53... from 8:55 until 11:41, almost without changing position, he kept the eggs shaded from the sun with his body and wings until there was natural shade in the box...
