Hotel, foundation hatch webcam plan to keep chicks safe

What was once an urban phenomenon is now an annual tradition thanks to the Canadian Peregrine foundation.

On June 12, two peregrine falcon chicks were banded at the Toronto Sheraton Centre Hotel.

The fledglings, which nest on the forty-third floor of the hotel, were named Kevin and Dina after CITY-TV on-air personalities Kevin Frankish and Dina Pugliese, who participated in the event.

This is the fifth year that falcons have been banded at the hotel.

It’s only the tenth year where falcons have been observed to nest in Downtown high-rise buildings.

Another pair of falcons has been nesting atop the building at 18 King St. E. since 1995 and produce offspring each year.

Banding is a long established procedure by the provincial and federal wildlife resources to band the young peregrine with leg bands in an effort to assist with management and migration and monitoring of the young birds.

Mark Nash, director of the foundation, explains that after the baby falcons are banded, ”they spend about 45 days at the nest prior to them taking their maiden flight.

“They are young and overweight and because of this excessive weight, and since they have never flown before, end up coming to the ground. On the ground they are unable to gain altitude again and the foundation has been actively involved in monitoring and performing the services of a ‘Fledge watch’ at all the urban nest sites.

“Our purpose,” Nash continues, “is to work with the ministry of natural resources and rescue these baby fledglings, check them over for any obvious signs of injury and after they have been checked out we bring them back to the rooftops to repeat that scenario. We are rescuing birds from the sidewalks or roadways two or three times during their first flights.”

The Canadian Peregrine Foundation is a non-profit organization dedicated to the restoration and recovery of endangered birds of prey. They work with many partners who assist them with this program. One sponsor is the Sheraton Hotel. Hotel rep Cynthia Bond explains why the hotel is involved.

“Sheraton is proud to be foster parents of the baby falcons. In addition to giving donations, we also monitor the webcams for the falcons, and from a hotel perspective we do not allow our window washers to go anywhere near the nest when the mother is on the nest or when the baby falcons are waiting to take flight.”

Bond continues, “When we were first notified that the birds were in the building we were delighted to work with the ministry of natural resources to ensure the birds’ well-being.

“When you look at the volunteers at the foundation and see the people putting so much passion into this how can you not become involved? It’s something very special to have the birds in an urban landscape.”

The Canadian Peregrine Foundation also held a banding on June 4 at the Mississauga Executive Centre site. There are other urban sites in Etobicoke and Scarborough where they are waiting for the birds to “reclutch.”

These birds failed in their first attempt to hatch eggs but if they are successful in this “reclutch” and hatching there may be another banding event in August.

Donna, I'm confused. These were the the fledglings from 2007.  They were Tiago and Wind's only two before Rhea Mae took over the Sheraton.  

I also did a browse through some old stuff and came across this picture of Rhea Mae that I wanted to share. I only got part of her in the picture because she was right over our heads.

one juvenile which she thought had dark tape. Later she saw one on the
pipe,definetly adult as was said and also a Juvenile with a white tape on
it,which would be Osler,so likely 2 of the juvies are still in the area. Ive
already seen a juvenile Peregrine where I count migrating raptors. While the
bird seen wasnt necessarily migrating,since there is no nest in the vicinity
that was successful this season,its a wandering juvenile.  :thumbsup:

I see the ledge has been busy again, which is nice to see! I caught a couple of pictures of an adult on the standpipe Monday and today.

Today’s morning pictures show another bird ( I think an adult) on the nest tray & some bowing between the two, so I’m guessing it was Rhea Mae & Tiago.  And someone was back roosting on the standpipe this evening.

Both adults spent a great part of the day together either on the nest ledge or around the area.  It was heart-warming to see them together.  As I write this shortly after noon on Christmas Eve, they are both together again.  One in the nest box and one on a nearby ledge.

Both adults have spent quite a lot of time on the Sheraton ledge and the neighbouring perches since the start of the year.  I have also been seeing adults at Mount Sinai, but never all four adults at the same time.  Today, at 1 p.m. as I checked the locations, two adults are on the Sheraton nest ledge and two adults are on the south louvres of Mount Sinai!

Does someone have an alternate way to contact Mark Nash at CPF?  Their website is down (getting a 404 website not found error) and I tried emailing him, but that bounced back with "domain not found".  I know the email address was good yesterday-he had replied to something I sent.  Thanks!

Many thanks to the Folks of Rochester Falcon Forum for the quick email this morning. They were happy to report that in the wee hours of the morning, Rhea Mae put down her first egg of the 2010 nesting season.

I had been watching the webcam last evening and Rhea had been spending many nights sitting at the nest ledge. But last night she was on the nest tray. After dark she climbed into the tray and layed down. This morning, egg # 1!

Many thanks to everyone who emailed me and gave me the heads up.

Linda Woods just emailed me to say that Rhea Mae has laid a 2nd egg.  Don't know when it happened.  WooHoo!  You go Rhea Mae!   :flowers:

You know, I've been watching the Sheraton all day...I knew she had to have another egg under there...but I was aggravated with the bright light, so I shut it off.  Then I read Carol's post & decided to try again...opened it up to Tiago on the eggs & Rhea Mae arriving on the other end of the ledge...next frame was this one!

An extended visit to the Sheraton nest ledge confirmed the band numbers of the adults, Black on Black, 29 over H, for Tiago and  Black on Red, P over T, for Rhea Mae.

And long after my camera battery gave out on the “stand-by” mode, Tiago finally moved off the eggs to reveal 3 eggs. Rhea Mae was quick to return to her time incubating. Tiago didn’t waste anytime leaving the nest ledge. Just like his dad.

Ei-I found this on the Kfalconcam site-

On August 16th, I was able to finally be at the right place at the
right time and see the leg bands on this female that has been
fraternizing with Tiago. Perhaps, Tiago is just following in his
father's footsteps ( Windwhistler) and she has followed. With the
assistance of fellow peregrine lover across the border together we
were able to ID this female peregrine. Her name is RHEA MAE and she is
a 2006 Hatch from Rochester, New York.

Then I found this:

And wasn't Tiago with Wind before Rhea Mae?  Hmmmm...

Tiago took over his father's site - he was born at the King street site.  I think his mother was Mandy but I'll have to look it up as I'm not 100% going on middle aged memory alone!.  His dad of course was the famous Windwhistler - the bigamous male that ran both King and Sheraton sites simultaneously.  

Windwhistler was born at my site in Etobicoke at the now Sun Life building.  His mother was Alberta and father was Toby.  Alberta was born at the Wainright breeding centre in Alberta (hence the name) and was brought to Hamilton as a foster chick for release.  That's as much as I can remember without looking it up..lol!

Thanks Kris & Carly!  I don't know why I didn't remember that...I remembered all about 2-timing Windwhistler, but not that Tiago was his son...hope he doesn't take up that habit too!

I know there is a database of band #'s from the mid-west, not sure what the URL is.  Maybe someone could post it?  It's sometimes hard to track down a band #, since there is no universal list.

I doubt he'd try it with Rhea Mae.  She's got big yellow feet and she knows how to use them!   :2funny:

I know I have it in my research folder at home-but it's only mid-west peregrines.  The other site is the Patuxent bird banding lab (again, link at home)...but you have to send in a band # and wait for a response.  A few other state sites list the bands used in a given year in their annual peregrine report, but it's spotty.

Rhea Mae ousted Wind but I thought Wind showed up at another building last year.  Does anyone remember this?

Not sure if she has been seen this year.  I hope so. 

Wind appeared at Mt Sinai Hospital last year after a one year absence (it's not far from the Sheraton actually!) with a new mate however due to rooftop repairs they were not successful nesting.  I heard the repairs are ongoing for this year as well as the entire roof has to be replaced and given it's a Hospital, it's not something that can be postponed without jeopardizing the safety of patients and equipment inside.  

She has been sighted though, a few weeks ago Linda said two were on site and last week someone saw one on site so not sure what is happening there.  Im sure Linda will update the site once she has something to report!

Tiago and Rhea Mae now have 4 Eggs. The image is difficult to see for most of the day, except for those early birds that are up before the crack of dawn.  But, just by chance I clicked on the Toronto Sheraton Camera and finally , Luck, 4 eggs sitting in the tray. Now that’s enough Rhea Mae, start incubating!

I do have to agree with Linda.  I hope that there won't be any more.  There are too few Watchers in Toronto to cover all the nest sites and the tall buildings popping up around the Sheraton are hazardous to the young fledglings.

A quick visit hoping for a photo opportunity, with no luck. Both Rhea Mae and Tiago are hanging tight for incubation. I’ll have to try another day for a picture of the 4 eggs.

Thanks to an email from my friend Leslie Kinrys,I was alerted to a posting on the Tommy Thompson Park (Leslie Street Spit)banding station blog which reported seeing a banded Peregrine Falcon for most of one day perched in a tree,near their banding station. This sighting took place sometime between April 7th and April 13th.  The band number was clearly seen and photographed(a photo may be added later) which was black over black,30/Y. CPF was quickly able to provide the identity of this bird. The Peregrine was named Stormin,who was banded in Toronto at The Sheraton Centre  Hotel on May 28th 2009. It’s great to hear back about one of the Peregrines which CPF  helped band and is most rewarding for the volunteers who helped take care of the Peregrines during fledging time and the staff at the Sheraton Centre Hotel itself,who are such good stewards of their Peregrine family.

Great news!  Maybe she'll head to NYS to visit with her cousins in the States!   ;)

I'm not sure we've ever had news of one of Rhea Mae and Tiago's young after they left Toronto.  I do believe that Stormin was a small male, but I'm not 100% sure.  I'll have to check my pics when I get home.

Both cams not working at Sheraton...Rhea Mae cam frozen since 10:24 am yesterday.

The cam situation there has been most frustrating & aggravating this year.  I keep wondering if our old main cam is still functional enough to donate to the cause.

I agree, the cam closest to the eggs is bad...too bright, can't see anything. What did they do?

I think the cam is broken...I think it got stuck on the night setting so any sunlight blows out the picture, and it's a sunny ledge most of the time.  We'll just have to count on the on site watchers to count beaks during the day...should start hatching end of this week.

Definite problems with the Sheraton Cameras.  Received the following two emails from Linda Woods:

Hi Carol,
No luck with rebooting, I think we may not have internet anymore. Just as I got to the nest, they did a hand off of the nest, and I clearly saw all four eggs.  Perhaps next week at the earliest for a hatch. I'll have to check everyday.  Rhea Mae and Tiago are doing a good job.

 A quick check on the Sheraton and Tiago was doing his time on the eggs. They like to keep tight under the camera, so even seeing them live can be difficult.  But I saw no sign of hatch this morning. No egg shells yet.

Both cameras are down, and at this time I don’t have a clue as to why. Incubation continues, and with the cooler weather today, Rhea Mae and Tiago are hanging tight to the eggs.

Linda checked the Sheraton nestsite again yesterday, no hatches yet.

She attempted to work on the computer again with no luck.  She's hoping to have things back up and running soon.

Back to the Sheraton this morning to try and resolve the camera problem. A quick peek into the nest ledge and there I saw two parts of an egg and Rhea Mae munching on another half of shell.  Darn it! I didn’t  have my pocket camera with me, so photos will have to wait until this week-end.  I expect the other two eggs to hatch this weekend.

By the way the Sheraton cameras are back, of course. I got the right hand camera ,Osler cam, going this afternoon, and the nest box camera this evening. Keep an eye for camera pics for the chickies.

I don't know anything about their setup so I don't know what's causing it.  Maybe Linda has some idea.  Just have to wait for evening or a cloud to pass by

I asked her about it awhile ago and she thought it might have to do with new, very reflective buildings that have been built near the Sheraton.  Possibly causing all the light.

It doesn't seem to be more light to me-the Osler cam doesn't look any brighter.  I suspect the aperture settings are off kilter-like when our team was tweaking the new cam to get better night vision-it sometimes didn't reset in the morning & the picture was overexposed.  But I don't know if it's a camera adjustment, software, auto adjustment sensor...lots of things it could be.

I was so busy saving that I didn't notice she was feeding them-or trying to.  It looks to me like the pile may be larger than 2, but I'll reserve judgment until I can count beaks!  :clap:

Hey Everyone;
I was to the nest site today around 11:00am ? and waited for a handing off. I missed it trying to confirm leg bands off the male. The two of them are really quick about it. I tried to take a picture but the actual camera blocks a clear view of the little ones. Rhea Mae and Tiago have nested in the lower left hand side of the nest box, as they did last year. This makes it difficult to take an actual photo. Altho the image on the webcam is better angle, it is a lot different actually viewing the nest live. The lens has a lot of dust and dirt on it, throwing off a lot glare. I hope to clean it when we band the birds.
I could see two chickies... oh so sweet and so teeny tiny.... but cannot confirm a third. But I will take the word and observations of all the eagles eyes watching the webcam. THANKS everyone!
If someone has noted a feeding schedule, pls let me know, so I can time it to be there for the next feed.  :thumbsup:

I definitely saw 3.  There was another feeding around 3...so every couple of hours...and there were 3 heads for sure.  Of course, I got home & went to copy the pictures off my flash drive...and nothing!  I was in such a hurry to leave I guess I copied them to the common drive at work instead of my flash...tomorrow for sure!

Speaking of Wind, the peregrine, has she been seen???

I believe "Wind" is currently nesting at Mt.Sinai Hospital, on University Ave, Just up the street from the Sheraton Nest site. Don't have an ID on the male as yet. Need a power scope for that. Wind paid us a visit last year when we observing the Mt.Sinai nest site. She came very close to us. We we dove for cover, she came to rest on a area, where I was able to confirm her leg bands. Friday, the same person was again observing the pair and confirmed the band colours of the female, but not the numbers. But given creatures of habit, her resting spots are the same as last year, so I'm confident that it is Wind nesting at Mt.Sinai Hospital.  That would be wonderful if it is Windwhistler, as her mate. Both Wind and Windwhistler were hatched in 1998, so that is pushing the age. Windwhistler was hatched in Etobicoke,( Toronto )

I was so happy to here that Wind was ok last year.   :clap:

YIKES!  The nest cam is worse than ever!  Sun is really bright there this morning...and someone is up on the standpipe

Linda, thank you so much!  I am so glad that Wind is around.  I was thrilled to know where Rhea Mae is but sad when she displaced Wind.  It is a story we are so familiar with now with our birds.  It also gives hope that Mariah is around, which I think is the case!

She's back sitting on them...the best capture of 3 eyases is attached.  Can't say if there might have been another under the pile...

Finally, I was  able to capture and witness a feed.  After so many days of missing it by a few minutes. Today, I just arrived and Rhea Mae  began feeding her three little ones.

One egg still to hatch.

The three Sheraton Centre peregrine chicks are eating well and sleeping lots.  The fourth egg is still unhatched and at this time, I’m not sure it will. If it is going to hatch, it should be with in the next day or two.

Rhea Mae and Tiago continue to be good parents.

You know, I am assigned to Toronto overnights a lot in my flight schedule.  I cannot wait for a chance to go below the Sheraton City Centre Toronto to catch a glimpse of Rhea Mae flying out of the hotel to play with her children!

John Carlos - You can get in touch directly with Linda who monitors the Toronto Sheraton Falcons.  She is "windatmyback" on our forum, and you can click on the email icon and possiboly meet up with her.

If you are there for any length of time, she could use all the help she can get when the young-uns start to fledge.  They don't have a group like we do in Rochester, and it so difficult with all those buildings.

I second that!  After seeing what the watchers have to go through in Toronto, our watches have been relatively easy!  So many tall buildings over there and the nest boxes are spread out!  And then there are the reflective windows!

Hello ALL

We have finally been able to confirmed the banding date for the Toronto Sheraton Hotel Banding,,,,
Banding has scheduled for 10AM in “The Pinnacle Room on the 43rd floor” – Toronto Sheraton centre Hotel, downtown Toronto .
Set up at 9:00AM, banding at 10AM.  We must be finished and out of the Pinnacle Room no later than 12:30pm as the Sheraton has to clean the room up for another function that has booked in the early afternoon directly after us!
In addition to hosting the banding again this year and providing their spectacular facilities overlooking Toronto , the Toronto Sheraton Centre Hotel has also graciously offered to provide juice and cookies for all.

Hope to see you all on Friday May 28 at 10 AM.

Just as I had anticipated, all three chicks are now out of the nest tray and free to wobble the nest ledge. I arrived this morning just in time for a morning snack. They are really impressive looking birds.

That ledge is quite safe and good for running back and forth from cam to cam. I love this nest site because of the running room. She sure did nest there last year. Don't worry, they are fine. Wait til banding.  :o

And not just Rhea Mae & Tiago-this is RM&T's 3rd year (I'm pretty sure), but that ledge has been successfully in use for many years before that.  I know of Wind & Windwhistler for quite a few years...might have been others before that.

Always has to be a rebel in the bunch!

So after a day of searching for Quest and yet again not finding her, your traveling road crew ended up at the Sheraton in a room on the 42nd floor just below the nest site.  Our first excitement happened when both Rhea Mae and Tiago flew off of the Sheraton and flew together in front of our window.  WooHoo!  Love those Peregrines!   :clap:

Both landed on the scaffolding on the right side of the very tall BMO building across the way.  Seems to be a favorite spot, where they have a wonderful view of their scrape. 

Right now Tiago is on top of the Sheraton and Rhea Mae is across the street on the BMO building.

Now the Road Crew is relaxing and winding down from a long day on the prowl.  Lisa McK is mesmerized over the colors fluctuating up and down the CN Tower.  :wow:   Kathy O is concocting unusual beverages, playing bartender.  :martini: Joyce is enjoying these concoctions.  :penguinspin: Yours truly is Laughing and Laughing.   :hysterical:

Tomorrow will be a fun day spent with our friends from Canada banding Rhea Mae and Tiago's 3 eyases. 

Oh, my there's a full moon!

Oh, back to our story.  We cannot wait to find out what the babies will be named and will report as soon as we find out.

I thought the camera was stuck...until I realized the shadow moved.  I think they've been traumatized! They need food...they'll feel better then!

I was fortunate enough to be able to go the banding of Rhea Mae and Tiago's eyases today.  It was really great meeting the "Rochester Gang" after 6 years of only knowing their personalities through the kfalconcam and the rfalconcam forums!  I also talked to Linda Woods (of the Canadian Peregrine Foundation) and told her that I would like to try to be an official watcher this year.  I took photos of the banding and will post a few eventually.  I had a great time -- it took my mind off my sadness for a little while, but I was really tired and had to leave before the end.  Anyway, it was a truly significant experience in my life and I will remember it for a long, long time!  Especially the kakking and the flailing of those wonderful big yellow feet!!!

This past Friday, the three little ones were banded and given names.Rhea Mae and Tiago have three males this year.Detailed information on the occasion will be posted here along with many photos of the newly names chicks and VIP’s in attendance.  The names of the three boys are as follows,

Star- Scribe:  named by The Sheraton Centre Hotel

Lorenzo:  named  by Jan Chudy

Legacy:  named by our good friends and dedicated Falcon Watchers from Rochester, New York. These ladies followed and rescued Rhea Mae when she was just a fledgling.

Today a check on the three boys, I arrived just in time for lunch.

I like the name Legacy a lot and think it is quite appropriate for one of Rhea Mae's offspring.  It would work at least equally as well for one of Beauty and Archer's kids.  I looked for a synonym but couldn't find anything that worked.  "Heritage" came closest to conveying the meaning but isn't much of a name.

These images taken this morning and this afternoon.  Good time for a morning nap by the stand pipe, and since that was good this morning, it was good enough for this afternoon.  Today the oldest is 36 days of age and should be ready for it’s first flight any day.

First Fledge!

Toronto Sheraton Centre has had their first fledge of the season. Star took flight sometime early this morning, Unfortunately it was only seen by his siblings.  Numerous sweeps of the area throughout the day and at 8p.m. there was still no indication as to where this little guy has flown.  The adults were not  giving up any secrets either. Food went to the ledge this evening at 7p.m. Legacy had his fill and even a second helping. Lorenzo was content not to partake of the evening meal and kept to himself at the other end of the ledge. Lots of flapping by Lorenzo and looks like he’ll be the next to take flight.

A quick check of the nest ledge early this moring still has little Lorenzo and Legacy on the nest ledge. Heavy rains and wind last night made for a very wet, blustery and cold night and still its around 11 degrees calceus this morning. In comparison to the hot humid weather that we’ve had over the past day, it’s actually very cool!

The search is on to locate ”Star”, the first to peregrine to fledge this season. What a heck of a night to spend your first night away from home!

Just got word that Watchers Zoe and Big Frank will be joining Linda today to search for Scribe-Star.  Let's hope for the best.  I really hate those premature fledges!  Wish I lived closer.   :(

Keeping my talons crossed.  Fledglings from this nest have wound up in the strangest places over the years.  I think it was one of Wind's juvies that went down an air conditioning duct and had to be rescued from inside the building.  And, of course, Lily trying to take the bus to Buffalo  :rofl:

June 06, 2010 - Toronto - Sheraton Centre

GOOD NEWS!
 
Star, the missing fledgling has been found! Not too far from home either.
Harry, one of the dedicated volunteers found him a short time ago sitting on the one of the window ledges directly across from the Hotel on Richmond St.
Thanks Harry!  and everyone else that came out in the rain to once again search the area.
Al-tho, not the height of the 43 floors of the Sheraton Hotel, he is still 14 stories above street level.
This building that Star is resting on, is vacant and ready for major renovation. It’s an older building with very deep window ledges that wrap the entire building. That is a blessing,as the bird can walk the entire diameter, sheltering it’self from the intense sun we had yesterday, as well as the wind and rain from last night.
Rhea Mae and Tiago have Star in sight  and it appears that Star has a bit of a crop, so he may have had a meal.
This also explains the position Rhea Mae was last evening, cleaning prey. Direct sight line for Star.
Legacy should be the next to fly. Very little down can be seen under his wings and lots of flapping and running of the ledge yesterday.

Thank goodness.  First fledges-- especially in wild weather- are just unnerving.

Linda is a falcon whisperer!!!

I wrote to Linda & Frank thanking them for sharing the news of Scribe-Star.  I mentioned that the three Cleveland Terminal Tower ledglings were also blown off their ledge on Sunday morning.  All were found and placed back at home base.

!!! Way To Go, Star, First Flight For Legacy
June 08, 2010 - Toronto - Sheraton Centre

After over nighting   at the old day care, Star, finally made another flight.  He ended up on the Keg Restaurant.  For many years now, volunteers have wondered what it might be like to enjoy a meal at the Keg while watching a fledgling on an adjacent building.  But once again we are teased as we watch from the outside, while Star stood directly over the entrance. I found star shortly after arriving on site.

 The group of volunteers had to endeavour the day around the Keg, with the wonderful aromas of Grilled foods, knowing Star was there but could not see him.  I guess with all the BBQ smoke, enough was enough for the little guy and he took flight again around 7p.m.

He came towards York Street and banked left and headed south along York St. to Adelaide and gaining height. As soon as he turned left at Adelaide Street. I started to question myself, ” was that really a Juvie and not a peregrine wanna be pigeon?”  I last saw him gaining height heading towards the Lombard building on Adelaide ( party hat).  I lost track of him.  Bruce and I started searching this general area. I retraced my steps, re visioned the flight path.  A ha! I found him, and good for him. He had made it all the way up to the west facing side of the Lombard building and landed dead centre of the west facing glass panel window, sitting at the base. Dead centre. The sun was shining on this area and when I looked. He was sitting straight up and looking proud as punch.  Good Job, good strong flight.

From that area, he took a few more flights west, ending up on the Dominon Building at Adelaide and University, tried to head for the DBRS across the street, circled back and headed west towards University. At one time Star had given Marion and I a scare. He was last seen headed for the  Shangra La construction site, but had circlled back and ended up on a tight window ledge behind the Dominion Building.

Legacy ( Red ) Took first Today and I was not there to see it.  But Zoe and Harry did.  At last light for the day, Legacy was still on the west, south west corner of  the Bell building on Adelaide St. Where he had been for the most of the day. This building is high, so a good flight for him.

Lorenzo ( yellow) the youngest was fed on the ledge, this evening around 7:00p.m.  He is the youngest and I guess he’ll enjoy the room to himself for the next day or so until he takes his first flight.

That's odd that when I looked just now at the CPF site it says that Lorenzo (red) fledged and that Legacy (yellow) hasn't yet and was fed on the ledge.  They must have changed it since you posted, Jeanne.  Confusing as to who else fledged.   ???

Hmm, very strange.  I also can't look at previous posts on that site.

Head scratcher for sure, Jeanne.  And on the banding video, it said that Legacy is the oldest of the eyases and on the CPF post it says he's the youngest.   :crazy:

This evening, huge wonderful flights by the two fledged juveniles, Star and …. Legacy. Wow, they are keeping their height, while Rhea Mae and Tiago kept a watch on the ledge.
 
Lorenzo, who has not taken his first flight as yet, has stayed on the ledge this evening. Good thing the weather is not the best to take a first flight. Fog and rain today kept activity at a low today.
This evening after the rain stopped and the fog moved out. The two brothers took this opportunity to stretch their wings, giving guests in the Club Lounge a bit of a show.
Staff are commenting “we know when the chicks fly by, they fly close to the windows” The adult peregrines keep a distance.
Volunteers also had the opportunity to see an episode of
“Running of the Gulls” as Tiago moved them out of the area and away from the fledglings.
Hopefully sunny skies tomorrow may entice the remaining peregrine chick into his first flight.
It was a good day… after the rain stopped.


!!! Lorenzo Flies!
June 10, 2010 - Toronto - Sheraton Centre

Just after 9am today, Lorenzo took his first flight.  It wasn’t
elegant.  I think he tried to get back to the nest ledge and did a
gentle face plant on the window just to the left of the nest ledge.
He then slid down to the edge at the bottom and flapped for about a
minute.  Then he flew over to the bottom of the ‘e’, first one in
‘Centre’.  When I repositioned he had disappeared.

Later, from City Hall, I had all three chicks in view.
Lorenzo was on the north roof of 120 Adelaide.  He was running back and
forth and flapping.  The other two were on the north roof
ledge of 130 Adelaide, flying and playing tag.  Lorenzo eventually
moved to the northeast corner and according to Jan, was joined by
one of the brothers.

That's wonderful news for the Toronto kids...thanks Kris for posting this and thank you Linda for your observations.  :clap: I wish them no injuries.

Our last peregrine to fledge ( Lorenzo ) is still keeping lower than the Sheraton Hotel. Last evening we had left him on the east side of 120 Adelaide St.  This morning I could not find him, he had moved off of that perch. I left the area around 11:45 am and returned around 1:30. and joined up with another volunteer. She had spotted him on the east side of 120 again.

After the rain we decided to view from the a higher elevation and spotted two juveniles on the north east side of the vacant building on Richmond St.  An adult was on the north west corner.

After a while the well flighted juvenile took off along with both adults. Adults returned and to try and nudge our slow flyer into the air without any luck. Eventually both adults took off again.  Lorenzo then decided he did not like being by himself and flew to the next building eastward ( 85 Richmond ) He scooted across the roof top a few times trying to find the adults. Around 7p.m. he took off southward along Sheppard Street and we lost in the mist and the flat light. We repositioned to ground level and did a search of the area. We could not find any indication where he ended up. No peregrines in view. We think he either circled back or is in the area of Sheppard St and Adelaide at 7:30p.m.

Star, Legacy and Lorenzo appear to be flying well at this stage. Two of the juveniles return to the nest ledge regularly in search of a meal from one of the adults.

  They are still using the hotel roof top and neighbouring roof tops for shelter from the sun and rain and of course, more meals. Today they were spotted in the direct area of the Sheraton Hotel and I am sure they are giving the hotel guests an air show in the evening showing off the newly acquired flight skills   :clap:

Scanning the usual spots at 11:40, I found a juvie on the middle bar of the “S”.  As I watched him, he started walking up the slope of the letter;  he then slid back down.  He obviously thought this was great fun because he did it another 3 or 4 times!  He stayed on the letter until 1 p.m. at which time he took off and went up to the south side of the roof of the hotel.  Checking at 1:55 p.m. he had gone and I was unable to find him.

Thanks for the post.  A video of that would have been wonderful!  The juvies are so curious and a joy to watch as they explore!

I don't know all that much about the Toronto family trees, but I believe Tiago-Rhea Mae's mate-is the son of Windwhistler and Mandy when he was the tiercel at the Sheraton and King Street nests at the same time.

Hurricane and his mate O'connor of Ohio successfully raised 2 offspring this year - his natural first offspring.  However he was a foster dad last year to the 3 MEC chicks who lost their mum in a territorial fight a little after they were born.  We were all excited to finally see him have some offspring of his own.  He's been at Osler for many years but it seems to be a challenge for a female to keep that site for more than a season or two.  There was a territorial fight again this year but O'connor held her own and they raised one female and one male and both fledged successfully  :handshake:

One of Mariah's offspring's offspring has been spotted.  Rhea Mae's 2009 male STORMIN (and M&K's grandfalcon) has been sighted by BIG FRANK.

"I walked out my side door,on the way to raptor watch at Rosetta McClain Gardens today at about 8am. What to my wonderous eyes did appear but a Peregrine Falcon eating a Northern Flicker atop a neighbors tv anetena,at Hollis and Birchmount. Immediately I set to trying to get the band number. First I noticed the obvious it was an adult. I thought at first it was a female,but indeed it was a male. Saw coloured tape over the USFW band,which was blue. CPF puts coloured tape over the USFW bands,when the young are banded so we can more easily identify which young Peregrine is which at fledge watch time.  Thought I read one band number but on review of the photos the band number is 30/Y Black background White letters/numbers,which means Canadian..confirms its one CPF banded.  I did a quick search and this Peregrine is Stormin,who was banded on May 28th,2009 at The Sheraton Hotel in downtown Toronto. Stormin had been spotted at the Leslie Street Spit earlier this spring and photographed  April 22 of 2010. I watched as Stormin devoured the Flicker,before ummm getting to flight weight if you know what I mean,and taking off to the west. Likely spotted again about an hour later by Pat and Nancy at Warden and Danforth. The photos are abit bloody so dont look if you are gentile. Have a stack more pics but this is a sample. The first shows the blue tape,the 2nd shows a beautiful shot of Stormin and lastly a reasonable shot of the band. Rest assured I was able to see in that and other photos the band numbers/letters.
I will post to the CPF website tonight on the Sheraton site,and on the International News,so the Rochester Ladies see it for sure. - - Frank"

Mark Nash always says that we have a Falcon Exchange Program (FEP) between Rochester and the Toronto area and that Peregrines know no borders.

And we don't know where Mariah & Kaver were hatched.  I've often wondered since so many of their offspring head for the northern shores of the Great Lakes (usually Canada).

True, we did have quite a few Canadian Falcons that crossed the border and vise versa.  :devil:

I would have loved to see Mariah and Kaver as eyases.  Was Mariah born with her fierce look and was Kaver a QTP2T from day one?   :happy:

They are all cute but Kaver had to be a QTP2T right from the get go!  :heart:

I've been going through my old stuff, looking for information for Ei and l'm now going through 2006, reliving the sadness of Mariah's injury and the joy of watching three beautiful eyases; Rhea Mae, Aura and Sabrina.  and who could forget Kaver becoming a super dad, taking care of Mariah and his three young ones.  I'm posting this here, because I came across a poem written by my friend Dale P for Rhea Mae when she was a young fledgling here in Rochester.  I love this.  Thank you Dale.   :clap:

Great poem! What a year it was.  Mariah's injury was heartwrenching and Kaver's devotion was heart warming.  Both the reason for many tears.  Rhea Mae and all the babies sure have come from amazing stock! 

Aural Aura!  She was definitely vocal!  And probably gave Rhea Mae practice for those stomping skills we have seen during banding for her babies!

 Downtown/Midtown Toronto Summary
December 25, 2010 - Toronto - Sheraton Centre

I developed a short summary of my involvement with the Downtown and Midtown Toronto peregrines from a volunteer’s perspective. Brief information on some of the other sites is included. The purpose for doing this was to accompany Christmas cards. Since it covers several sites, I have placed it here in the Sheraton site postings as this is where my year began.

Harry and the Peregrines – 2010 Summary

The phenomenal success of last year has repeated itself again this year. Of the available nine chicks, eight survived to the end of the watches. We also had an additional site to monitor. I worked the two downtown sites as well as Yonge and Eglinton. Because of the G20 Summit, we were issued photo id cards in case the watches overlapped the G20. Fortunately this was not the case.

The first watch was at the Sheraton Centre. Rhea Mae and Tiago had three chicks – two males, Star and Lorenzo and a female, Legacy. Star apparently likes opera. He flew into the underground parking garage, perched on a pipe and eventually flew out again. A rescue was not needed. He has a daughter this year. I attended the banding at this site. Our MPP, Glen Murray, also attended and made a nice speech. It was good to get his support. Next year, the watch here is going to be more difficult now that Jan has retired and moved to France. It was great to have her high up in her perch in First Canadian Place and in almost constant radio contact. Hurricane, born here in 2004, is the resident male at the William Osler Health Centre in Etobicoke.

The next watch was at 18 King East. Erin and her mate had two chicks – Malik a male and Zera a female. We still have not identified the adult male. Zera was trapped on a glass balcony and had to be rescued. Both chicks did well and kept their height. We have word about previous chicks. Jasmine from 2001 was severely injured and had to be put down. Ely from 2008 is raising a family in central New York State. Majesty from 2002 [one of the Toronto Five] is raising another family in Flint Michigan. She is also the last survivor from this hatch. Her parents were Ponce-Kingsley and Victoria.

Just when we thought the watches were over, Mark got a call from Toronto Animal Services that a baby peregrine had to be rescued from a glass balcony near Yonge and Eglinton. Ranger and Hunter used to be the resident falcons in this area. Clearly these were different adults. The nest is located at 2200 Yonge. An emergency watch had to be set up quickly. Frank, from the Etobicoke site, took charge. Most of the downtown team participated along with Bruce and Lyn, who lives in a nearby condo. All four chicks had to be rescued with one not making it. The survivors are two females – Cyclone and Tara, and a male – Typhoon. We took the opportunity to have the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources folks band the birds when we had them in hand. Also, Lyn kept them in her condo when necessary.

At Mt. Sinai, Wind and her partner had two clutches of four eggs. Nothing hatched. There is some suspicion that the male may Hunter from Yonge and Eglinton which was another failed nest for several years. Up there, they were on the Canadian Tire building.

In Etobicoke at the Sun Life complex, Angel and Jack had three male chicks – Blackberry, Dot-com and Mercedes. Three rescues were necessary, including Blackberry from a balcony. OMNR folks later let us know that a male peregrine chick was found dead in Guelph. It was Blackberry. Mackenzie from 2009 has a mate in Burlington.

In Ottawa, Diana and Conner laid two clutches. Unfortunately nothing hatched. Nihei from 2009 was injured and died in Quebec. Zanar from 2004 has a successful nest on the Ogdensburg bridge with four chicks.

At Yonge and Bloor, the pair from last year remain. They did disappeard for a couple of months during the summer but that was probably due to the number of building cranes in the area. No nesting attempts were observed. They tend to hang out at the CIBC building at Yonge and Bloor, the apartment tower in the Manulife Centre and the TD Waterhouse building at 77 Bloor West. There was no evidence that they were around the Four Seasons Hotel this year.

In Rochester, they have a new pair of adults – Archer and Beauty. From what I gather, they successfully raised three chicks this year. The nest box was moved to the top of the Times Square building downtown. The Kodak cameras were moved there as well.

The red-tailed hawks at Queen’s Park are still around and have raised a family again this year. They can now be found on the tallest of three pine trees just east of the east flag pole on the south side of the Legislature.

The turkey vultures in the Bloor and Sherborne area are still around. They are often seen in the Yonge and Bloor area being chased by peregrines. Large flocks of these birds often pass overhead. Welcome to once a week garbage pickup.

Do you mean is Majesty Cabot-Sirocco's sister?  They have the same parents, Ponce-Kingsley and Victoria.  She would be Mariah's sister-in-law.

Yes, Zanar is with Valiant.  I have notes at home about the 4 eyases-I'll post the details later...

I had heard from June who heard from the DEC lady in Ogdensburg that one of the eyases fell into the river before fledging.  Thankfully a man had been kayaking and came across the struggling youngster.  He reached his paddle out and the young falcon climbed up onto it and was brought to a rahabber.  Soon after the eyas was given a clean bill of health and returned to the nest area.  Another happy ending.   :clap:

How sweet that the man was there when the little one needed help! 
Carol, any word on Ranger?  Bothered me that the guy thought Hunter was with Wind.  (No success with babies so if it is Hunter, that may explain the multitude of failed births for Ranger).

I cut and paste this from Donna's CPF report she posted this a.m.  This is a report from the Sheraton in Toronto.  Wonder if it was Rhea Mae or Tiago?  Maybe Rhea Mae is considering taking up ballet!   :wub:

A lovely peregrine falcon just finished his/her dinner on the fence between the Alliance Francaise and The National Ballet of Canada at Spadina and Lakeshore before taking off south between the buildings. Very cool. I had no idea they wintered here. Thought it might be of interest.

!!! Territorial activity is heating up!
March 01, 2011 - Toronto - Sheraton Centre
CPF Postmaster Reports:

A quick update with a report of our activities yesterday- (March 2nd), when the CPF head office received a call from the Solar Window washing team of a downed peregrine on the roof of 144 Front St. west here in Toronto, that had been injured after colliding with a building across the street. Mark was dispatched to meet with the building management and one of he staff from Solar who quickly got him to the roof inspect the injured raptor. Upon his arrival, the raptor was quickly identified as an adult male Sharpe-shinned hawk that was actually hiding on the flat top roof of the building under some large cables in the south east corner below the roof retaining wall. Further investigation of the happening, it appears that the male Sharpie may have been pursued by one of the territorial adult peregrines (likely from the Toronto Sheraton Centre nest) and driven into the building face in an effort to escape from the peregrine(s).

The Sharpie was then able to make it to the roof top across the street at 144 Front Street, and was laterally grounded (and hiding) from the adult female peregrine who was perched on another roof top two buildings over,, (obviously on guard). An effort was made to capture up the Sharpie to examine the poor bird for any injuries, but we are happy to report that as we approached the Sharpie, it quickly ran across the roof top to the north side and quickly took flight up and over the roof retaining wall. The Sharpie then dove down to almost the street level where it quickly flew north west with a very strong flight until it was out of our roof top view. The Sharpie flew in the opposite direction and behind another building obviously in an effort to conceal its escape from both us and the adult peregrine that was still steadfast on the watch on another roof top.

Fortunately the peregrine missed the Sharpie’s escape and there were no further incidents to report. Sadly we were unable to identify the identity of the adult female peregrine as we did not have binoculars at hand. 

If it was Rhea Mae, no wonder the poor SS Hawk was hiding.  Thankfully he escaped to tell tales of his near miss with a big bad momma Pefa.  Mariah & Kaver would be proud of their daughter.   :happy:

No one was home at the time, but it does look like they've started to scrape too!

Look who's home!  They are actually both there=you can see one in the left frame and the other in the right.

RM&T (I assume it is them since we haven't heard otherwise) are both in the nest tray-just missed catching the pic.

Someone's been laying in the scrape for 10 minutes so far...

P.S. It did not look like there was an egg in the scrape before she arrived...

She's back laying in the scrape...in the snow...looks like an egg won't be far behind!

Linda W was going to try to get to the Sheraton for a closer look today.  I'll let you know when I hear from her.

Freak snow storm here today....yesterday plus 10 ..this morning minus 12 with windchill and hasn't stopped snowing.  Several inches on ground now..I was wondering if she'd lay soon as she beat Angel last year for the first time  :2thumbsup:

  As I looked out at all the birds sitting in the trees and in the fields, with all the snow today, I can't  help but think of their strength, intelligence  and  will to live.  Amazing.  We can all take a lesson from them.  

I am assuming it is Rhea Mae since we haven't heard of a change in the resident pair at the Sheraton.  Seneca hasn't been seen since January at Brookpark Rd. Bridge.  A new female is there now-Green Girl from Harrisburg 2009.  We are all hoping Seneca decided to find a better scrape.

Just looks like the edge is cut off, but the clock on that camera is still running on the old daylight saving time rules-I think it will fix itself 1st sunday in April.

No egg that I can see this morning, but she was on the ledge for a while when I first got to work.  And lots of talon prints in the snow...

Got a quick peek before it washed out again-pretty sure there's still someone there...

Can’t be too sure at this time until I get a visual confirmation, but the activity at the Sheraton nest tray is indicating we are close to a first egg.

Last evening I checked the camera before the snow fall. One adult was in the tray and then sitting on the edge of the tray.

This morning a bird was lying down in the nest tray with all the snow around. Around 9:30 the bird moved and was seen sitting on the far end of the nesting ledge, sitting on the other camera frame. She later returned to lay down in the nest tray. She has returned this evening. I captured one shot late this afternoon / early evening and I can’t see an egg in the tray, but the adult peregrine has returned to the tray. Could she be keeping the nest warm with anticipation of the first egg? Please see pictures captured from the tray camera. Please be aware with the spring time change the clock on the camera did not adjust for the spring time  change.

More news tomorrow when I make the trip to the viewing port. Hopefully I’ll have coloured pictures to show as well.

(No egg that I can see yet but soon) One falcon, prob RM there now on the ledge.

Both were just up on the ledge-just one in the nest box right now...

Spoke too soon-no one in the nestbox now...

No eggs yet at the Sheraton Toronto. When I visited this morning, both adults were not in my view. But they did leave foot prints in the snow. The play of light on the snow, leaves a smiley face.

I think we have an egg!

Rhea Mae flew to the ledge but did not come to the tray while I was there.

I kept my laptop on the coffee table while I went about my business for the last two hours and it finally paid off.  Almost exactly at the same time as two days ago, the adult stood off the nest box, and there were three eggs beautifully displayed.

Friday April 1st, Finally showed me the 3 eggs. After leaving I was walking passed Osgoode Hall and found a Red Tailed hawk sitting in the tree. A good day.

Now with the fourth egg present incubation has started.

After more than two years in the planning, our dreams have finally been realized with the replacement of the aging black and white infrared camera on the Toronto Sheraton Centre nest.
In addition to the incredible day time colour images that it is now providing, the night images are much better than those provided by the 1999 vintage camera that we originally installed.

Should this camera stand the test of time, efforts will be made to seek further sponsorship and partner opportunities to replace all of our older CPF nest cameras at many of the other urban peregrine nest sites that we are closely monitoring.

While the camera’s provide an incredible educational opportunity for all, they also help us learn and understand more of the ways of the urban peregrine, their behaviours and adaptations, they have long since proven to be a most valuable as a necessary management tool for the species itself, particularly as it applies to the urban management of the species, and help us gather and report on the birds activities so that we can provide up to date and accurate information on the birds activities, including their courtship, egg production, incubation times and the exact hatch dates of each nest sites being monitored. This information assists in the coordination and the scheduling of routine building maintenance activities, window washing schedules, banding times frames and helps us with predicting the fledging times of the young hatchlings.

A much added bonus, allows us to closely monitor both the health and development of the hatchlings themselves, identify the types of food that they peregrines are eating, and of course assists us at fledging times during the actual fledge watches.

!!! Sheraton Hatch?

Yesterday Zoe, captured an image from the web cam with evidence that we may have had a hatch.

Small fluffs of down can be seen in the image. I visited the nest site this morning with a quick look through the view port. Only a few fluffs of down remain, and what appears to be small fragments of egg shell. Keep checking the web camera and perhaps someone will witness food come to the nest tray.

Been watching all day & I didn't see a thing...

Personal opinion-I don't think there was a hatch Friday-not much movement off the eggs all weekend except to switch.

But I think something's happening now...Rhea Mae has that hunched up look going on...

I was lucky this morning at 10:20 am to catch a shift change and get a great view of at least three of the eggs, but slow to the go to save a copy the shot. Seconds later, while I was trying to save the great photo I had captured, one of the resident adults flew back onto the ledge and returned to the nest tray to cover up the eggs. Sadly. my first photo was lost during my scramble in an effort to copy save it, but I was able to sucessfully save a second photo showing a tiny view of the exposed eggs in the nest tray as the adult attempts to cover them up and carry on with their incubation duties.

Although there has not been a hatch as yet, its getting close!!

Observation for Toronto - Sheraton Centre

Eggsactly how big is your screen Shaky?  :-\  I tried on my monitor (a measly 19") and then on a 22" monitor on a lab machine, and I couldn't get the pictures to display side by side on either of them.  That's going to be a real bummer when fledge time comes!  Wish there was a way to put a scroll bar down the side of the window for those of us who can't see them side by side.

What I wound up doing was shrinking the window (ctrl -) so the insets were small enough to fit side by side.  The resolution wasn't great, but OK when it's wandering time.  I'm back to full size (ctrl 0) for hatch watch.

It's 1280 pixels wide.

Tiago just brought in food and Rhea Mae fed them.  I do believe there are two hatches.  Have to go back and look at the pics I just saved.   :happy:

Looks like another egg shell top on the right side of the nestbox, but Rhea Mae's such a good Mom-she's keeping them covered up and warm.

So silly me didn't think to look at my email before bed-here's 3 of Carol's captures of dinner being served.  Looks like 2 baby beaks to me!

John Bennett reports: I was fortunate to sight this Peregrine falcon on Sat Mar 3rd. The location was Halls road in Whitby just before Noon.

Mark Nash comments: With many thanks to the NYDEC, we have been able to put a name to the juvenile peregrine falcon that has been spotted and photographed by John Bennett. A huge thank you to John for the great photos that he was able to shoot. The young juvenile peregrine falcon’s identity has been confirmed by its colour leg band number as being a female peregrine that was produced in Rochester New York at the Kodak nest site last year - 2006, and her name is Rhea Mae. She has two other sisters hatched at the same nest site last year.

When RM was ID'd in Canada 4 years ago!

Donna - that is one of my favorite pictures of Rhea Mae.  When we saw that picture, the original road trip gals, Kathy O, Lisa McK & Carol P, made immediate plans to travel to Whitby and find our beloved Rhea Mae.  That was the best trip ever.  We never did find her, but we had an awesome time trying.  I have no idea how many people we showed that picture to and asked, "Have you seen this bird?  Have you seen that branch?"  Hahahahahaha!   :2funny:

I remember that trip you all took and yes, it's a fantastic pic of RM!!  :clap:

Thanks-I thought I caught a glimpse of shell among the eyases earlier, but it could have been a whole egg or half shell.  They're still sticking tight to them.

Only problem with the beautiful sunny day in Toronto-can't see bupkis!

The updates are coming in fast and furious!!! Moments ago we just received a recent update with a great photo of “THREE” hatchlings as of today!!

At least we know for sure that 3 eyases are old enough now to form a beak pyramid!

And that Rhea Mae is one gorgeous peregrine!

#4 looks brand new today-much smaller than the other 3.  It managed to get out of the pile & Rhea Mae put it back into the pile & is brooding them now.

Well, it was active enough to get all the way over where it was...and looks fine in the 2nd & 3rd pic.  I think it just flipped over & she put it back with the rest.  A lot we haven't seen over the years before streaming video...
