1  Rochester Falcons / Rochester Falcon Discussion / two questions ???? on: 02-Mar-12, 10:22:11 AM
Do we know for certain if Mr. is banded or un-banded?

Since I gather this is the new dominant pair in this territory, when Beauty is released back into the wild it would probably be best if she didn't return here?  Since Mariah returned after her release at Montezuma (as I recall) it would seem to me Beauty would have to be released further away to discourage her return.  Any thoughts on this?

Thanks

Where is third NB?  Can you disclose?

Any sign of Unity brooding at KP?  If not could the DEC  or someone in authority go get those two eggs and substitute them for these two?  Since B & A are certainly attentive to this NB and there appears to be little evidence of Unity knowing what to do at her early age.  My guess is B & A would continue to incubate the eggs from KP - esp if they could be quickly exchanged.  Far fetched ?????

If you enlarge the photo and look closely, it sure looked like it was NOT empty.  The little one just didn't survive.

Yea, I just did the same thing - looks fairly certain there is an embryo in the egg.  Too bad but at least fertile - maybe there is renewed hope for the remaining eggs.

The Tiercel appears to be un-banded.

6  Rochester Falcons / Rochester Falcon Discussion / Great Smithsonian.com Article on Peregrines on: 19-Apr-11, 05:06:20 PM
Here is a link to an article I came across about Peregrines in NYC.  It's an interesting read for both newbie or experienced "bird nerd".  It chronicles the early work by Cornell in the early '70's in reintroducing Peregrines in the East.  I didn't' know about the hybridization, for example.  An interesting read - enjoy!

One of the things I really enjoy about this site is the opportunity to Learn!  I am sure many of you share this feeling so I though I'd share some research I did with all of you.  I have been watching the live video of Beauty and her egg laying and I realized I knew very little about egg laying and bird reproduction.  I did an internet search and came across this website from the UK which I found fascinating.  It does a great job explaining the basics and also many of the differences between species and all sorts of interesting tid bits - why are some eggs white and others colored?  Why does it take several hours between eggs and is this true for all species?

At the risk of coming across as a total bird nerd   nerd  here is the site - enjoy!

I hope this is in the right section of the forum - I know you'll move it if it should be somewhere else
10  Other Nature Related Information / General Nature Discussion / Help w/ Raptor ID on: 22-Feb-11, 11:08:42 PM
Weekend before last I was in Toledo for daughter's volleyball tournament.  We pulled into a McDonald's for a quick rest stop when I noticed a large Raptor flying low across the parking lot.  It flew into a small adjoining woods and perched high up in the largest tree on the far edge about 100 yards away.  The first impression I had of this bird was its size - about the size of a Red Tail, but slimmer and with a long tail and short wings of an accipiter.    The girls went in to the restaurant and I grabbed my binoculars.  The bird was perched facing me and I noticed a dark head - it appeared uniformly black and a uniformly light colored breast with only a single bar crossing its breast at the level of the shoulders.  I couldn't see any other distinguishing marks except the long tail.  I figured this is a Goshawk (my first) and probably a juvenile which woudl explain the inconsistent breast.  It was a handsome bird.  I was pretty excited - the girls cared less!  Can you help with this ID?
11  Rochester Falcons / Rochester Falcon Discussion / Re: Deer living below Platt St [Pedestrian] bridge on: 22-Dec-10, 08:15:03 AM
They were on the West Side, RG&E.  I've seen deer in the area before as well - never seen them swim the river and for now, it is running too high I think for that to be a possibility.  Surprised they are staying in such a confined area with so little food.    Deer have become so adaptable to urban/suburban life among the humans!  It seems every little woodlot or conservation easement has deer living there or traveling thru as they move from m one "island" to another.    Just as our beloved Peregrines have adapted to tall buildings instead of tall cliffs!  (How is that for a segue back to topic!)

Merry Christmas everyone!
12  Rochester Falcons / Rochester Falcon Discussion / Deer living below Platt St [Pedestrian] bridge on: 22-Dec-10, 12:37:06 AM
I had business on State Street this morning and had some time to kill afterward so got a fresh cup of coffee and walked out to the middle of the Platt St Bridge.   I haven't been out in a while.  Nothing but some ring billed gulls flying but I couldn't help notice the deer living below the bridge.  There were three I saw bedded down next to the chain link fence and from the tracks in the snow it appears they are confined to the relatively small area between the fence and the service road.  They appear to be foraging on the trees and bushes in that area but there isn't much to eat!  Lots of human activity too, yet the deer seemed oblivious.  IS anyone feeding them?  If hunger forces them out of  that area is there a way for them to get out - perhaps into the gorge or areas down river near Maplewood, (where I know there is a resident population of deer)?  Surely others have seen them - does anyone know their fate?

An excellent question.  I'll bet someone here will know or know where to turn for the answer.  How about you GVAS Folks - have an answer?
14  Rochester Falcons / Rochester Falcon Discussion / third egg viability? on: 20-May-10, 09:24:19 AM
Since many watchers have reported seeing a pip in the egg yesterday (it shows clearly in a shot of the second hatching) I am beginning to wonder if this egg is viable.  Shouldn't it have hatched by now? I am probably not alone in this concern.

I did a little research this morning and the following image is enlarged from the main camera and taken this morning.  Look at the very bottom of the egg just above the edge of the nest box.  See the indentation - it appears as if a pebble is sticking into the margin of the egg.  At what point do we concede failure on this egg and if it hatches too much later, what are the eyas chances competing with the others who will have a substantial head start?
15  Rochester Falcons / Rfalconcam Now / Re: 4 EGGS as of 6:43! on: 15-Apr-10, 07:12:18 PM
Impressive - I just saw the photos and I'm amazed.  Even more so that some of you were apparently right there to witness it!  You can see the color variance in the new egg quite clearly on camera 2.  Also notice what  a good dad Archer is - certainly does his fair share of brooding!

Way to to go!   thumbsup
