Last night I watched Astrid prepare to lay her second egg, but it was really too dark in the nest to see much.

This morning:

Astrid and Ares continue to be the resident pair at this nest.

Astrid laid her first egg on April 1.

This article has some great photos of Astrid with her first egg. What a beauty she is.

Every time I check this site the eggs are being incubated, but according to this article, there are now four eggs:

First there were signs that one chick had hatched:

Then a second chick hatched:

There was also good news this year that one of the chicks from 2015 has been identified as having a nest and a mate of her own at Sint-Maartenstoren in Kortrijk. She is banded S2, a band number which brings back memories from elsewhere. So now Eva and Han will be grandparents.  wub2

The first peregrine chick in Europe hatched very early this morning at the Oudenaarde nest. Congratulations to Eva and Han!

Incubation has not been easy this year; the birds had to deal with extremely cold, freezing conditions and high winds. Eva was also challenged on two separate occasions by a 2017 juvie coming right into the nest and driving Eva out both times. Luckily, it appeared that the eggs were not damaged. The intruder juvie is banded D/E, and comes from a nest in Turnhout, 107 km away, which had four chicks last year.

First visit by the intruder on March 25, 2018. She returned once more on March 31.

There is an egg in the nest. Most recently I have been seeing two unbanded birds at the nest.  Sad

The resident female, Michelle (banded black/green P/87) and her unbanded mate, Newman, both returned safely from migration.

Today, they have their first egg.

8  Other Nature Related Information / Raptor Web Cams / Great Horned Owl Nest, Reno, Nevada on: 30-Mar-18, 06:11:12 PM
This Great Horned Owl nest is one of a kind. There are two females, nesting side by side on a ledge, and one male, who brings food to both females. This situation has apparently never been documented before.

From the Nevada Department of Wildlife:

What: Two females (based on size and behavior of incubating and defending nest) on a "man-made" cliff (aka building) nesting next to each other directly on rock substrate.

Who: Left is Sienna she is on 2 eggs, right is Jina she is on 3. A third bird (presumed male due to smaller size and behavior of bringing prey to females) is confirmed - have not seen a fourth at the same time as the other 3. He is Arie. None of them are banded. UPDATE: Two eggs have hatched. Owlet #1 is Washoe. Washoe will be the biggest since this owlet was the first to hatch. Owlet #2, Zephyr, hatched Friday when it was so windy.

Where: Reno, NV Two or more female Great Horned Owls nesting next to each other is not documented anywhere. We do not know if they are related (that would disturb them a lot to take blood samples) nor do we know if Arie is the father of both clutches. So please watch for a 4th bird!

This evening, as Mom took a short break to eat:

I could see movement inside the egg.

Mom returned one minute later to turn the eggs and settle for the night.
