Banding Day Update

We hope you’ll join us on Thursday, 31 May, starting at about 9:45AM Eastern time (that’s TOMORROW!) for special coverage of the 2007 Banding Day event. Be sure to watch the action on the Rochester Falconcam cameras (use the Mulitview page), and go to our 2007 Banding Day page on Imprints where we’ll reveal the winners of our eyas naming contest! The Banding Day page will be active tomorrow, and we’ll include a link to it in the News Flash on our home page.

Wow, so the old birdcam.kodak.com is dead. I’m glad I got the email about this as I’d have missed it entirely. Thank you so much 🙂

How do Kaver and Mariah respond to their babies once they are returned back to the nest? Isn’t it true that if you go near or touch a baby bird the parents won’t go back to them? I love this site and come back to it as often as i can! I’ve passed it on to relatives in other states.

Great shots of the banding. I watched the live video for the Harrisburg PA falcon banding a couple weeks ago. They did one eyes then put it back in the nest right away before working on the other 3 so the nest was never empty. Why arent’ you using this method? They also sprinkled some kind of medicated powder and checked for parasites – said they lost some eyeses to parasites in the past. Do our birds have these problems?

  4. Darby Says:

It is kindof Ironic that all the names chosen were from people from Rochester. Did you not get any names of anyone in other cities or states perhaps that you liked?

  5. Darby Says:

And poor Mariah, she looks so sad looking for her babies.

  6. Sheryl Says:

Thank you so much for posting all the views of the banding. It was awesome to view all the details in New York, while still being in Chicago. What adorable chicks and proud parents.

  7. Kate Says:

It was so awesome being able to watch the banding process. This was the first time I was able to and it was fascinating. I love the expressions on the little ones faces! I wonder if Mariah remembers from year to year that her eyases disappear for an hour. I felt sad for her that she returned to the nest to find them gone. However, I have a feeling both she and Kaver were nearby watching the men remove the babies, so they probably were quite aware of what was going on. It is just such an amazing thing to witness so closely. Thank you, again, for doing such a wonderful job providing us with this, otherwise unlikely, experience. Will we be watching flying lessons next?

  8. Julie Says:

Just out of curiosity, how many submissions did you get for the naming contest? And from how far afield?

  9. Rose Says:

You would think that Mariah and Kaver would get used to this banding, as it happens every year. But they are both clearly wary, with both sticking close to the nestbox since the chicks return. Wow 4 girls! Poor Kaver. HA HA. This is the fun part now, watching them develop their own personalities.

  10. kalea Says:

i thought there had been five eyases??????

I work in a third grade class in the small town of DeQueen, Arkansas. We have been watching the falcons on the computer since I first heard about them. I know the kids will be excited to hear the babies all have names now. They were thrilled when the 4 eggs hatched. Everyday they ask if they can see the falcons. I am sorry we missed out on the banding of the babies. I am sure that would have been something different for them to have watched. Hopefully next year they will still have the interest in the falcons and will try to watch again. I know I will be watching. Thank you for sharing this and teaching us all about falcons.

  12. Diane from Parma Says:

Thank you, thank you, thank you and thank you! It was very impressive to watch the whole banding process. The camera angles, the shots taken were awesome. I couldn’t hit save fast enough. All four females, is that common? Too many hormones for Kaver.
I hope Kaver and Mariah don’t mind me claiming their babies. Whenever I’m watching the site and co-worlers ask what I’m looking at, my response is “my falcons in Rochester” Today, many of the coworkers stopped by to see the often talked about banding day. I don’t know what I’ll do when they all leave the nest.

Thank you again for a fantastic site.

  13. Linda Says:

I missed it! I see that they are banded. Please share how it went.

  14. Cyn Says:

    Awesome!!!

  15. Diane Says:

Got to watch a small portion of the banding of the babies. Looked back a little later to see that they had been returned to their nest. Boy is mamma falcon ever mad!! She has been in the nest box ever since, wings flared away from her body and mouth wide open. Looks like she is saying “Stay Away from my Babies!”

  16. Marion Says:

I was wondering if some pictures of the banding could be posted for those of us unable to watch this morning? Thanks for all the work you do, for the falcons and falconcam fans!

  17. Erin Says:

Banding day was great fun to watch. It was amazing to see the eyas up close, they look so small and fragile, but that is an illusion when you see how big they are against someone arms. It is amazing to see how large the talons are given thier age. Mariah has been hovering over her babes since they were returned to the box. Currently she is on one of the camera posts keeping watch. She is such a great mom.

Jess a huge thank you for the wonderful updates. The naming contest was great and wonderful names were chosen.

If you guys go to shakymon.com, you can get pictures from earlier today. Go to the site, click on “Quick and Dirty 30” on the left hand side. When you get to that page, at the top it shows the current time. Under that it will show , -30, + 30. This will take you back 30 minutes at a time, till you get to the time you want. It shows 30 minutes worth of pictures. If you click on one and the hit the forward arrow key >, it will go thru the pictures one by one.

  19. Allison C Says:

Hi guys! I saved all the pictures I got from the webcam because my mother’s classes wanted to see the banding, but couldn’t while they were in school!

I made a quick website with the pictures and some captions of what (i think) is happening in each.

    http://allisoneyas.angelfire.com

The pictures are hosted on photobook, and the page is angelfire, both of which break if there’s too much traffic. If it doesn’t work, don’t fret, and come back later.

  20. Carolyn in Oregon Says:

Allison C…thank you so much for saving the photos. I loved them all! Missed the actual event, but loved the photos!!!

  21. Jess Says:

@monica – You’ve fallen afoul of an old wives’ tale, I’m afraid. Most birds do not have a well-developed sense of smell. Rescued birds are returned to nests all the time after being handled by humans.

@Darby – Locations of those who submitted names in the contest were not considered. The members of the committee who selected the names did not know who submitted each name or the submitter’s location. It’s just coincidence that the winning names both came from local submitters.
