Quest’s Summer Territory

Quest seems to be settling in to her summer “territory” very well. As with the rest of August, she has continued to roam up and down Cape Cod. In contrast to some of our recent maps, we’re showing her over the water at a couple of points in this one. Transmitter data from the last two days of August were not of the highest Confidence Level, (degree of accuracy), so the specific locations may be off by as much as several kilometers. Nevertheless they fall within the expected range of her travels so we feel confident including them here.

A few days ago we received another eyewitness report of Quest at the Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Refuge from Rich Johnson. Here’s what he had to say:

“Three days ago I noticed a peregrine strafing [Goose Pond] here at WellfleetBay and the volunteer naturalist there (Ivan Ace) put his binocs on it and saw the antenna profile… The photos are from Aug 17…”

And here are the pictures that Rich sent along!

On behalf of the Rochester Falconcam team and all of Quest’s fans around the world, we want to thank Rich and Ivan for their sharp eyes and great camera skills!

If anyone happens to see or photograph Quest, we’d love to hear from you!

Thank you for the updates and the photos!! I miss seeing all of them so the pictures are wonderful!! Keep your eyes to the sky!

  2. Donna Says:

This is the most awesome news again. Love the pics. Quest seems to be doing very well on her own. Great job IVAN & RICH.

  3. Carol P. Says:

She’s beautiful! It is so awesome that we’re receiving so much information and pictures of our beautiful Quest. – Carol P.

  4. Alison in Austria Says:

Gorgeous girl. How much more successful she seems to be than her brothers who earlier wore the transmitters! And how much better the quality of the sightings, since she had the good sense to go to a nature preserve where folks are out looking for photo motives of the avian variety 😀
I wonder if Cape Cod has room for a permanent peregrine? The food supply is good and the winter will be no harsher than in other parts of the east coast where falcons spend the winter nowadays. Or is the territory already claimed and if Quest shows signs of staying around, will she run into trouble with resident raptors? Is this something the Massachusetts Department of Natural Resources (what ever it is called in MA.) or the local Audubon Society can tell us?

  5. Deborah Loudenslager Says:

THANK YOU RICH FOR THE WONDERFUL PICTURES OF QUEST – MANY MISS THE FAB 5 AND YOU’VE HELPED BY PASSING THESE PICS OF QUEST BACK FOR US. THANK YOU JESS FOR THE MAPS OF QUEST’S ADVENTURE AND YOUR ENTRIES!

  6. Rosamund Says:

Allison, I was perusing the Mass Audubon site yesterday and there are pictures of two other falcons on Cape Cod but it wasn’t clear whether they were a mated pair. Cape Cod is very flat and last time I was there no tall buildings. Seems unlikely PF nesting territory except for the endless presence of easy prey.

  7. Rosamund Says:

Oops! Just wanted to note that two PFs mentioned above were reported on the capecodbirds yahoo discussion group, not Mass Audubon. My mistake.

  8. Carol P. Says:

Actually the two previous Rochester Falcons with transmitters were Hafoc (male) and Skye (female).

  9. JenP Says:

With all of the sightings of Quest, and all of the good reports, it’s making me wish the others were also outfitted! Wouldn’t it be nice to know where they all were?

  10. Maureen in MA Says:

Yes, it would be nice to know how the others are, where they are, etc.! We at least have “our” Quest 🙂 Awesome news! Much thanks to those on the Cape who keep us posted with words and pix. That last photo of Quest in that post was gorgeous!

  11. Rosamund Says:

The other PFs observed on the cape are adults, so can’t be any of Q’s sibs. No observable legbands either. At least not on my screen.

  12. Alison in Austria Says:

Quest has siblings who are all grown up. The adult falcons who have been discovered nesting in Toronto and in Detroit are siblings because their parents are the same Maria and Kaver – they are just not from the same year. But all of Quest’s siblings do have legbands – or at least did when last seen in Rochester.
Thanks for the correction, Carol P.

  13. Kathy V Says:

Thank you , both of you, Ivan and Rich, for the great photos. Looks like Quest is doing good. I am so glad. I remember when she was sooooo small. Looking forward to more. Great work.

  14. Kathy V Says:

Yes I’d also like to know if Quest will run into any problems with other raptors there. Please let us know. Do we know of the where-abouts of the other four?

  15. June Kogut Says:

How wonderful to see more pictures of our beautiful Quest. I’ve been away from my computer for a while so was pleasantly surprised today to see “more pictures”. And on my own Cape Cod. I hope I get a sighting. You’ll be the first to know if and when.

  16. Birdlover Says:

So Quest is “on tour” so all her fans can see her! What’s next? American Idol? 🙂

  17. Melissa Says:

I am so happy to see another picture and read about
another sighting of Quest! Great shot of her up on the
tree looking down; what a beautiful sight she is!

  18. Kim in Italy Says:

    Thank you Rich and Ivan!
The last pic of Quest on the tree looking down is on the forums all around the world. How cute she is!
Thinking of Hafoc (2004) and Skye (2005), I like the transmitter for the first time. So glad she choosed such a beautiful place (I’ll never forget the Cape) to spend her first end of Summer. Hope many more for her and I’d also like to know if any problems with the two unbanded PF’s. Are they resident there or is it just a peaceful vacation with easy food? Anyway a good choice to improve her hunting skills “far from the madding crowd” of dangerous cities.
