Now that three of our eyases have hatched, and just maybe #4 is on the way, it's time to start planning this year's Falcon Watch Weekend.  I spoke to June Summers about it and she thought that the weekend of July 13 & 14 would be the best choice.  The young falcons should be fledged by then and flying well.

So mark your calendar and come join us here in Rochester (NY) for an awesome weekend of falcon watching, and meeting old and new friends.

It always conflicts with Corn Hill, but everything always works out.

I hope they don't wait till the last minute to let us know when it is again this year.

The Canadian Peregrine Foundation website says, "If leg bands are being put on the chicks for identification purposes, this is usually done during their fourth week, when they are large enough that their legs are fully grown, but not yet old enough to consider flying away when the banders approach the nest." That's usually anywhere from 22-27 days old. That could mean anytime next week.  Unfortunately we haven't heard anything definite yet.

Does June Summers/DEC know the oldest eyas is 21 days old tomorrow? I hope it's not another rush job like last year for Orion's banding-no fanfare like M/K years.

I am so glad that I am able to simply walk by the windows at work and see these beautiful birds in person almost anytime.  And I am so excited to be able to be here for my first Watchers Weekend and to meet watchers from all around the country!  No prior commitments or company coming this time!   :clap:

I would love to attend this year on Saturday but I don't have a car to get there. I live in Greece (not far from Delta Sonic on Ridge Rd W) if anyone is able to give me a ride there and back I would be most appreciative!

I was also wondering what was going on that weekend as nothing has really been said.  In the past couple years, the only thing that I know of is Saturday-when people gather in the park, watch fledglings, eat, drink and talk. Is there anything else planned? What's happening on Sunday?

I was going to do some research over the weekend to see what else is going on...other than Corn Hill Festival, which I've heard of but have no idea what it's about.

From June 15, 2013 through October 13, 2013 at 7:00 pm in Brackett Clark Annex

On display as part of The Gender Show, Debbie Grossman’s photographic series My Pie Town reworks a body of images originally photographed by Russell Lee for the United States Farm Security Administration in 1940. Using Photoshop to modify Lee’s pictures, Grossman creates an imaginary, parallel world: a Pie Town populated exclusively by women and girls.

Grossman is interested in playing with time, reimagining history, and reviving archival images and documents. Born and raised in Rochester, she holds a master of fine arts degree in Photography, Video, and Related Media from the School of Visual Arts, where she won the Paula Rhodes Memorial Prize, and a bachelor of arts degree in women’s studies and art history from Barnard College. Her work is in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Jewish Museum, among others.

"All the things the public most wants to see from the technology collection," that’s how Technology Curator Todd Gustavson describes Machines of Memory, the exhibition in the North Gallery. The display includes a variety of photographic highlights from camera obscuras through digital imaging designed to show the evolution of photography as well as its revolutions.

A section on Kodak showcases the cameras that changed the world, including the first Kodak, the first folding pocket camera, the first auto exposure camera and, of course, the Brownie. A selection of the most fascinating objects in the collection features, among other items, a lunar orbiter, a Technicolor movie camera, and "detective" cameras from the 1880s. "The exhibition really explores the depth and breadth of the collection," explains Gustavson. "There’s something in there to interest everyone, even people not previously familiar with photographic technology."

Mortal: A Portfolio of Woodcuts by Kiki Smith

This suite of 12 woodcut prints by groundbreaking American artist Kiki Smith was a 2011 gift of the Gallery Council. Self-published and printed in black on Japanese paper, Mortal (2007) depicts the final stages of the life of the artist’s mother. With great economy, the prints in the portfolio evoke a pathos similar in feeling to the German Expressionists.

This exhibition marks the first time that the entire suite is on view at MAG.

Every two years, Rochester’s longest-running juried exhibition showcases work by artists from western and central New York.

Carol is correct. I don't know exactly who they are but they are Rochester Falcons. I used an old Photoshop file that I played around with a while ago but never used. They are all banded so that leaves out M&K ... I just don't recall who's who. Sorry.

So they're offspring of M/K then? We had Jemison/Callidora tees in 2010, I don't recall that there was a tee offered last year with Beauty, DC and Orion on it so it would have been nice to offer a t-shirt showing our 2013 family. I did send Carol a nice group pic of them from this year's archives that could have been used but probably too late now.

He didn't say that-just that they aren't M&K since they're the only unbanded birds-other than UT, of course.

And I'm sure there will be many more items available with these guys in due time.

Hi is there a parking lot at Aqueduct Park or do you park somewhere else and walk over?

Hopefully Craig and I will be there.

Kapi has been following along but currently has a new fur baby so I suspect she won't be able to this year. I'll ask her.

Not for the park per se. We mostly parked in "the hole" last year & walked around. There are 2 public garages very nearby, but I'll let the locals weigh in on what would be the best plan.

If you check Ei's Landmark Map link at the bottom of this page you can see some of the parking lots and garages DT. I'm not sure what they cost maybe someone else knows their rates. 

And about Jim P ?? Haven't heard from him for a long time ?

Are there places to sit at the park or should we bring folding chairs? Other then cameras, binoc and possibly chairs, what else should we bring?

There are places to sit at the park, but not a lot of them, so they'll fill up fast.  It's not a bad idea to bring a folding chair for that and for fledge watching in the area.

I have another question.....are there bathroom facilities at the park?  :-[ 

I know there are restaurants near by but usually they require you to buy something to use them. And some of the other buildings may be closed on Saturdays or not have public bathrooms.

FYI all. I am not bringing the motor home ths year. I think people use the facilities in the restaurants that are close.

You will be sweating a lot of the moisture away, though.

There are no public restrooms at Aqueduct Park (it's a very tiny park). I believe most of the restaurants are closed, but Subways may be open, and if you want to take a short walk across the Main Street Bridge, the convention center is usually open.  And there are public facilities in the hotels, and maybe the Blue Cross Arena as well, if something is going on there.  The weekend watchers can tell you more.

We used Tim horton's last year. And the convention center

When we were there yesterday we found out that in order to use Tim Horton's you have to buy something to get a code number that will open the bathroom door.

Well, I could always use TH and buy lots of cookies.....1 at a time! LOL

Anyone who's interested in doing the Corn Hill thing...I printed a bunch of maps & such. There will be free shuttle buses from near Falcon Watch Central to the festival.

The location of breakfast has been moved to Watchers' Cove on Broad Street by the library. There are picnic tables, parking, and a great view of the falcons.

Where is watchers cove?

And no shade for those of us that don't like to be in the sun.

I see a Library on Bay Street, but not on Broad Street, do you have an address?

Watchers Cove is on the Broad Street side of the library. Plenty of shade.

Greetings to everyone attending Falcon Watchers Weekend.  I'm sorry that I can't be there but I will be thinking about you.  Perhaps on Sunday you can spare some good luck wishes for my new rescue dog, Sophie, who, until 2 months ago, was a breeder in a puppy mill.  On Sunday, she will be taking the test to become a Therapy Dog.  It's a bit soon but the test had been scheduled so we will be giving it a try.

It's a nice area by the library- I've spent many nice hours there. And you can see the babies! And anyone who wants to go to the park- it's right there.

Today is the day! WooHoo! It looks like it's going to be a beautiful day to see the falcons and meet all the watchers! I'm so excited!

Sorry I can't be there this year. Daughter is getting married at 1:00p.m. That and my health problems limit my lifestyle right now. Hey I gained 10 pounds and still don't weigh 90....working on it Ei( dumpster kitty)!!!! Still on oxygen ....boo hiss.

Well heck, I don't know where to start! What a great 8 days spent in Rochester. First, I want to thank MAK for her hospitality by letting me stay with her. Chris and Kara thank you also. What a great time we had watching all the fast N furious falcons flying the skies of Rochester. It may have taken Voyager a while to get her game on but once she did....wow, waiting was so worth it! She is magnificent!! Getting up at 4-4:30 kicked my butt but boy you have to get out early to see the show! Thanks for cracking that whip MAK!! 12 to 14 hour days of sitting, waiting for a falcon was worth the wait. We all got more exercise moving our chairs to follow the shade! Pretty soon there was no shade left, no where to go and the sun was brutal the first 3 days. A pool in the hole would have been nice.  ;)  It was great to see the locals again and finally, after 4 trips to Rochester, I met Shaky and Carrie, (what a funny guy!) I didn't take many pics, I was too fixed on the falcons and let the others with the BIG lenses, do all the work. It just makes sense. Saturday was fun and the only day I didn't use sunblock, paying for it now, I'm hurting!! Soon, the burn will go away and I will have the scars and memories of what a great time I had. Met a few from the chat too, Glo, amytraveler, Viper 1234 and his family, Joe is a cute kid and he loves the falcons! I assume one day we will see him out there with a scope, BIG lens, doing what a falcon watcher does!! I'll wait for that day. Thank you Rochester for a great week and I will be back! (scary thought huh?)  :o Had quite a few out-of-towners also! Glad you all could make it and nice seeing you again!

It was a great day-good to see everybody again and to meet new people!  Even though we left early because of the heat, we got to see some great flying by our Falcon family and I'm thrilled the "kids" are doing so well.  Thanks to all who posted pics and, Donna, Bill says thanks for posting 3 butt shots of him!  :laugh:
