Yesterday, it became clear that one of the juvies at the ArcelorMittal nest is suffering from Trichomoniasis (“Trich” for short), a parasitic disease that is transmitted through the digestion of infected carrier birds (like pigeons) and thrives in heat and humidity

This is having a devastating effect on our Greenfinches in particular. We used to have "beat them off with a stick" at one time - they would arrive in hoards and eat everything. Now, I would give anything to have one at the feeders.

Hope she makes it!

She can't swallow so she was rescued and being treated.

Update

C&C's Ohio Peregrine Page
Update: The Trich-infected juvie from the Arcelor Mittal Steel Mill nest site is going for surgery this morning to see if the massive amounts of plaque in her mouth can be removed. If they aren't successful she will be euthanized, as she is still unable to eat on her own at this point. Thinking about her and hoping for her today!

Come on baby, pull through!

What are they doing for this baby??  The pigeon people use a product called SPARTRIX and the pigeons with very bad trich are cleaned up in a few days.

I'm guessing this is a severe case!  :(

UPDATE!!!  Looking good!

C&C's Ohio Peregrine Page
Good news for ArcelorMittal juvie! Let’s name her! Last night Laura informed us that the trich-infected juvie from ArcelorMittal survived the surgery. The plaque that was removed turned out to be a granuloma and not a product of the trich. We’re learning so much from this fighter juvie, and although we hadn’t heard of this before, we have since found out that a granuloma is a non-cancerous growth that can form as the result of trauma or injury. So, now there’s more reason to be optimistic that she can recover if she can start eating and gain weight. She is due for a re-check in two weeks, so we’ll report further as we know more. In the meantime, we’d like to consider giving her a name (so that we’re not just referring to her as the “sick” or “trich-infected” juvie. I’d like Laura to have the final say since she’s taking care of her, but we’re open to suggestions. We would like to stay away from human names (although last names can work) and anything too lengthy, but here are some ideas we’ve been tossing around: “Fracas” (a synonym for “fight”), “Oakley” (after Annie Oakley, the first female gun fighter), or “Ralston” (after the Utah hiker featured in the movie “247 hours” who had such a survival instinct that he cut off his arm to free and save himself).

Laura said that the granuloma that was removed was huge and it was no wonder she couldn’t eat! Her name is "Spirit"

Update on Spirit

Spirit post surgery update: Went to visit Laura (8-5-13) and got to see Spirit (from the ArcelorMittal site) before I went away for a few days. Even though she’s no longer on a timetable to return to the nest site (as her siblings have dispersed and returning to her natal area is no longer an option) Spirit continues to progress since the large granuloma was removed from her throat. While I was there I got to hear her “voice”—her call is no longer muffled and strained. She’s eating on her own (and is using her tongue, which wasn’t functioning previously) and has just been taken off medication, so next she will be in a flight cage. It may continue to be a long road for her, but it was fantastic to see her bright eyed and “peregrine-like” after seeing her nearly lifeless when I first picked her up. She is able to be hooded now during weigh-ins (as before she couldn’t close her mouth because of the plaque so hooding her would have actually been more stressful). This shot is just after a weigh-in and some treatment with meds (which is why the feathers are wet around her mouth). She came in at around 650 grams (where she was with the last shots of her that I posted) and at this weigh-in she was 780 grams.

Thank you for posting the update on Spirit, Donna. She has already come a long way, and I hope she will continue to do well and make a full recovery. I am so glad she has already gained a significant amount of weight.
