Title: 22 Year Old Red Tailed Hawk Dies in the Wild Post by: patsy6 on 03-Sep-13, 05:42:34 PM From Braddock Bay Raptor Research Center Facebook Page:
Incredible story of a bird banded on 3rd of September 1991 at Braddock Bay as part of the Summer juvenile Red-tailed Hawk movement that we have been recently witnessing at Braddock Bay being discovered after having died 22 years later in Pennsylvania. This makes it one of the 10 oldest wild Red-tailed Hawks on record. Thanks to Jeff Bouton of Leica Optics and ex BBRR bander extraordinaire for passing on that amazing story! September 3, 1991 was not an exceptional day for raptors at Braddock by any account. I captured and banded just 10 Red-tailed Hawks that day (on others we'd banded >100). However, one of those 10 birds would turn out to be exceptional. One ...of the largest birds of the day, which took the largest band size acceptable for the species (7D), was just reported found dead near Marion Center, PA. This means the bird lived >22 years in the wild making it the 10th oldest wild Red-tailed Hawk on record! http://www.pwrc.usgs.gov/BBL/longevity/Longevity_main.cfm (http://www.pwrc.usgs.gov/BBL/longevity/Longevity_main.cfm) (it will appear here on the next update) Title: Re: 22 Year Old Red Tailed Hawk Dies in the Wild Post by: Donna on 03-Sep-13, 08:52:27 PM That's amazing!!! :hawk: Thanks!
