A peregrine falcon nest box could be removed from the tallest building in Sussex so maintenance work can take place.

But residents living in Sussex Heights, Brighton, are upset and claim they have never been consulted about the plans.

A petition has been set up to save the nesting box which was put onto the roof of the building by Graham Roberts from the Sussex Ornithological Society in 1998 to help protect the nests.

Sussex Heights has been home to a number of breeding pairs of urban peregrine falcons since the mid-1990s. There has only been one year when they have not nested on Sussex Heights.

Resident Allan Sayers said the board of directors from Sussex Heights Ltd claimed they had discussed the situation with the residents but he says no discussions have taken place.

The nest box, which has a webcam, allows an insight into the life of the peregrine falcons and how they bring up their young. Last year it was watched 125,000 times.

I asked the original poster for more information, and here is yesterday's update:

The board of directors of the building decided without consulting the residents.   The reason is that normally we undertake no work on the building during the breeding season Feb through till June...... for years that has not been a problem but we have a new Chairman and he has just pushed this through without any consultation with the residents association.   The residents have seen no data to back up the boards' decision and we have been asking for that since we found out about their plans less than two weeks ago.  The buiding is planning redecoration and essential work over the next 7 years and it is my belief it can be done without moving the nesting box.  The SOS and RSPB are of the same opinion.

Tonight the board are holding a board meeting after which they say they will give us their decision.

The board members are mainly normal residents just like the rest of us but they have shown utter disregard for their fellow residents over this.

wow!!! you guys have really boosted our petition already... the more comments we get from real enthusiasts around the world will let this tiny board of people know just what a silly thing they are planning.  They are talking about it only being 6 years that the box will be down and the birds can come back then.... thats so dumb.

I have watched this nest for several years, and would hate to see the peregrines lose their nest. Perhaps with enough media attention and protests, it will be possible to prevent this from happening.

The difference is that the board of directors said their nest box can go back up in 6 years. Kodak has never said if they would let ours be put back when they are done.  :(

Six years is preposterous.  They may as well say it will never go back up
