Title: Amsterdam nestbox
Post by: Aafke on 21-Jan-10, 10:58:10 AM
A few days ago I saw lots of feathers in the nestbox, probably from a prey. Today I saw a peregrine. All snow is gone. The second webcam picture is from December 16 greetings Aafke

Hi Aafke, I made a Kodak album from my visit last year. One fledgling (male )is on top of the smokestack above the nestbox, sometimes fed by one of the parents. Also some pictures of the nestbox with an eyas ready to fledge..All the other pictures are from the second fledgling (female).Enjoy.

This is so sad. We went through this with DeMortel and what a horrible few weeks it was. I'll never forget it. The intruder won..S2. It happens, we cry, we mourn but in the end, after all the name calling and our minds clear, we welcome her. It's human nature to feel this way but it's also nature why this happens. I just don't like it during hatching. :crying: Hope all goes well at this nest. Poor babies :(

Watchers on the ground say there is a new female ,which is taken the prey from the male .They say he tries to reach the youngsters with the prey but she takes it all.He is flying around with her like he is accepting her as his new mate.It looks like the fourth egg is broken, good be a hatch. They still don't get enough food but they are alive. It does not look good at all.I hope maybe Tine can tell us more about what is going on or maybe Aafke , Where Are You................ Hope for the best !!!!!! Greetings Carla

I was wondering, since there is no aircraft operating since Thursday,(volcanic ash)and this nestbox is in the neighbourhood of Schiphol Airport , there is only silence and the sounds of so many other birds could this have influenced the falcons. They are not used to this silence, and they can hear each other better.Just wondering.

Thought I would share some sentiments...
Many of us remember from Ma, Pa & S2 that the Dutch do not intefere. Nora from the Netherlands posted the sad news and ended her post with..."Our policy is to let nature have her course, no human intervention. Let the peregrines live their own lives, let them be peregrines in the peregrine way. We'll watch and learn." I really like the statement let them be peregrines in the peregrine way. I need to remind myself of that every now and then as I warm up to Beauty & Archer.
Juanita expressed this on the Cleveland board...[/color] "Nora, I am so sorry about Bea and her sweet precious babies. I feel her spirit waited until they joined her and they are together now. It is difficult not to cry and grieve at a time like this, for how can we not get attached to such glorious peregrines."
~Joyce

Hi Donna, The mom was driven off, but watchers don't know if she was killed. She is not found yet.The male did not get a chance to feed the babies because the new female took all his food and she did not feed the little ones. It's very sad. There is a new female and maybe there will be new eggs.I cannot think clearly about that. Greetings Carla

DeMortel all over..except Pa did his best to feed the eyas's. S2 was sneaky but Pa fooled her after a few days by caching food and letting S2 take one and he went to get another to feed his kids. What a good dad he was...yes, 1 died but the rest survived and S2 finally took the reins and helped. Poor Ma and this poor mother also. I'm sure it happens all over and we just don't see it unless there's a cam. I feel awful but I'll live. Thanks Carla.

Just wondering what's going on there. Every now and then I see a falcon there and was hoping for a 2nd clutch, if it's a new female. Poor Eemsmond huh....sitting away and nothing will hatch. Nijmegen should have a hatch any day now. Thanks.
