Kate's blog It’s very cold this morning: 14 degrees at the airport, 21 degrees in my city backyard. Assuming the Cathedral of Learning is just as warm as my backyard (1.5 miles away), the temperature at the nest has been below freezing since 8:00pm last night. For whatever reason, Dorothy stopped sheltering her egg around 9:30pm. Peregrine falcons don’t begin incubation until they’ve laid their next to last egg in the clutch. However, they do shelter the eggs to keep them from freezing. In her younger years Dorothy would have been on top of the egg in weather like this, not merely standing over it, and it would look like she’s incubating. But she’s not. The egg is certainly frozen and will never hatch. This spring Dorothy is 15 years old, retirement age for wild peregrines. She has a reason for not protecting this egg. I don’t know what it is. :(

She had a hard time laying the egg, we watched her laboring and it was honestly the toughest time I've seen a female trying to lay an egg have on cam. The only exception to that was at Cobb last year where the female died as she was egg-bound.
Yesterday and Saturday we watched all day as she tried again to lay another egg and no go. She was exhausted last night.

I was watching plus reading posts about her difficulty in egg-laying. Sweet Dorothy.

Dorothy must know it's time to retire and take it easy. She has contributed her fair share to the population of Peregrines out there. Thank you for Beauty dear Dorothy!

CORRECTION to my blog this morning about the frozen egg. Yes it was frozen but it might be viable. It wasn't incubated yet so who knows. Might hatch. Kate

Dorothy laid her first egg on March 20. It appears to be her last, yet she has not begun incubation. In her prime Dorothy laid an egg every 2.5 days until she completed a clutch of four or five. She always hatched all or all-but-one. Last year her age began to show. Her time between eggs was prolonged, three eggs did not hatch, and one of the hatchlings was too handicapped to live. Back in 2010 I wrote about what happens when female peregrines age (click here). Dorothy is now 15, two years older than the average adult life expectancy of 13. So we’re learning something. Yesterday Mary DeVaughn coined the term “hen-o-pause” on the Pittsburgh Falconuts Facebook page. I don’t know if birds experience anything like menopause but it explains Dorothy’s solo egg and her lack of desire to incubate. She’s certainly the right age for “hen-o-pause.” By Kate Poor Dorothy!

Well, like I said before dear Dorothy has made her contribution to the population of Peregrine Falcons (Beauty being one of them ) and if she wants to quit now it's fine by me. Relax and enjoy retirement Dorothy, you've been an awesome falcon and mother!

What a rough year for Dorothy. It looks like she's trouble producing yet another egg this morning, possibly artound 7AM (see comments from March 24 post for info on the other). She spent last night roosting on a rail above the nest box that would put her right above the new spot this morning that looks a lot like an egg yolk. It's just not her year.
Latest tweet! :crying:

She probably doesn't understand what is happening to her and why she can't lay her eggs. She's been doing it for over a decade, must be quite confusing for her.

It's not easy getting old for any of us-human or falcon. ;)

After I blew this up, I saw this:
"This is a closeup of the remains of the recently expelled bound egg. She absolutely needed to pass this egg, but there remains a possibility of an infection from it or a problem with the next egg in line, if there is one. She continues to look stressed, with her feathers "poofed" out more than they should be for the ambient temperature. But, again, it is very good that she was able to expel the bound egg."

I've been watching Dorothy for a bit this afternoon, and she does seem a little off the norm. Bless her heart, she's a beautiful Peregrine. She is just standing over the egg and snoozing. :(

Well Kate tweeted earlier that she and E2 were seen mating this afternoon ..so she's obviously recovered! I don't know what the future will bring...my first experience personally with hen-o-pause in action. In other elder falcons I've seen on cams, they just stopped laying eggs entirely..no issues like this. I should also point out that KathyQ is 15 this year and she just laid 4 eggs, so is SW in Cleveland. And we have Erin and WW here who are both 16 this year - so we'll see if they lay eggs successfully. Learning experience for all of us.
