Quote So was this just a winter foray of discovery? Will 19/K be back at the Capitol come spring? Or will we find a new male has taken over at the Capitol? Will 19/K become the new male at the Woodmen? Does this mean he displaced his own offspring (Mintaka)? Seems like changes are a coming all over!! I used to watch it but haven't checked it this year. I'm not sure, Kris. The cams were down from September 9 of last year until about ten days ago, so it was not possible to know what was happening. The only views I have had in the last few days have been of someone's lower back and tail feathers. I hope Hera is still there; if she is, it will be her tenth year at the nest. I wonder if 19/K went looking for a new nest site because of the loss of all his chicks last year. At the Woodmen nest, the chicks survived the same terrible storm. Also, back in 2008, all the chicks were lost at the Lincoln nest. The nest box does not offer enough protection; the site is very exposed and extremely windy. A good solid nest box with sides and a roof, and the bottom part of the front closed in, would be safer and give more protection. Title: Re: Woodmen Falconcam 2014/2015 Post by: DebInTexas on 15-Jun-15, 04:46:54 PM Looks like the flying begins at Woodmen. Posted today on Woodmen's site: "It looks like the young falcons are starting to fly the coup, literally. Sunday morning, one of the female falcons accidentally hopped out of the nest and over the side causing concern among falcon watchers. The falcon managed to land safely on the fifth floor balcony. Mom knows where the bird is and will continue to care for the youngster. Raptor Recovery officials advise that the bird will eventually fly back to the nest or to another building. Two more falcons are on the 28th floor ledge and can be seen in cameras 1 and 2. They should soon join their big sister in making their first flight. The whereabouts of the fourth falcon is unknown. We suspect she successfully completed her first flight and is perched on a nearby building. As the birds continue to grow and strengthen their wings, they will make longer and longer flights. And soon, Mom and Dad will be teaching them how to hunt for food."

Falcon Watch 2015: It is with sadness, we announce the death of one our WoodmenLife Tower Falcon chicks. We don't know many details, but it seems "Lilly" was fledging and fell. The three remaining chicks are definitely testing their wings as well but faring better. They are keeping our building crew busy, as they have to keep taking the adventurous chicks back to the roof of the building as they are found. This morning Charlotte was found at the courthouse across the street, and with a little help from the Nebraska Humane Society, she was reunited with her brother and sister. Fly free, Lilly. :sorrow: Title: Re: Woodmen Falconcam 2014/2015 Post by: MAK on 20-Jun-15, 12:43:48 AM :sorrow:

Yes! We just received an update yesterday: Max our male chick seems to have taken flight, and we haven't seen him for about a week. The remaining two females: Charlotte and Penelope have had a few issues: one seems to have broken her collar bone and the other one was caught up in a net on a nearby building, and seems to have gotten a little thin. Both have now been taken to Fontenelle Forest Raptor Recovery and are safely recuperating. Penelope was successfully released and immediately took flight. However, Charlotte did not, and will be taken back to the Raptor Recovery for additional rehab. While we were on the roof, we also saw Charity (mom), who landed on the roof when she heard Charlotte squawking.
