Title: Watchers Weekend 2014
Post by: Dumpsterkitty on 21-May-14, 04:52:23 AM
So now that the 4 little darlings have hatched we should probably start thinking about Watchers Weekend.

They will likely be flying by the end of June. So one week later, which is 7/5 & 7/6? Or the following week 7/12 & 7/13? Or???

I think 7/12 & 7/13 is Corn Hill weekend. That didn't interfere last year. Just food for thought.

So what do you all think?

Later is better.   Last year was too early.  They had only just fledged and there wasn't much action yet.  Would love to see flight lessons & food exchanges!

Last year they hatched a week later so it was around 7 weeks old. It's early so check my math but 7/12 & 7/13 should be 8 weeks old.

Corn Hill is fun, too.  I took a side trip over there last year while nothing much was going on with the falcons.

Later is better-I'm not available July 3-6. I have to animal sit in paradise that weekend.

I would vote for earlier (7/5-7/6), but just for personal reasons.  I will be out of town on the weekend of 7/11-7/12, but I might be able to make it for part of the next weekend (7/19-7/20).  Majority rules, I guess.

Besides the Corn Hill Festival there must be a big something going on there!  Hotels are mostly sold out the weekend of 7/11-13!  I know date isn't decided yet-just an observation.

Is it just the downtown hotels, or are the suburban ones mostly sold out too?

I found rooms at the Rochester Plaza & Hyatt. Only the Radisson was sold out. Kayak found rooms at the suburban ones too.

Jehovah's Witness conventions again.

Actually their website shows 07/04, 07/18, 07/25. Probably some carryover between weeks.

A date has been chosen for Watchers Weekend!

It will be scheduled for July 12th & 13th.  Cornhill is planned that week, but except for hotels, it doesn't usually affect us too much.  There should hopefully be plenty of hotels available outside the downtown area.

The week before is the 4th of July weekend and the following week, downtown will be busy with Jehovah Witnesses coming into town.  This was the best weekend and it should be late enough for us to see some awesome flying by our four fledglings!

Hope everyone can make it!

Just a quick note in case you didn't know regarding the T shirt...

You can select a different T shirt style that's less expensive. For example there's a value T shirt for only $15.95 - it only comes with one color choice (white). There's another for $20.95 that does offer color choices.  You can also get it on other items - long sleeved shirts, hooded sweatshirts, etc.

To see these options, just click on the 'See All Styles' button on the lower right.  Lots to pick from!

Lou

Next weekend will be here before we know it! We have 13 people listed so far on Facebook as coming. Anyone from here coming who's not on FB?

I'll be bringing my usual paper goods...plates...plastic ware...cups...napkins...

Please reply here if you're planning to bring something.

I'll also print up some info on the Corn Hill festival... http://cornhillartsfestival.com/ (http://cornhillartsfestival.com/)

Anything else going on that weekend? I know we usually just wind up hanging downtown anyway, but some people like options ;)

Are there picnic benches in front of the Library again this year? That worked out nicely as a starting home base last year.

OK...that's all I can think of for now...can't wait to see everyone!

I think there is supposed to be some sort of official contribution to the effort by GVAS this year, whether that will be in the form of food, beverage, shelter, etc. Maybe someone else who knows more could chime in.

Last year we had a last minute change of location for breakfast Saturday. There were a few people we couldn't contact to notify them. Then when dinner time came we lost track of some people. We eventually found each other, but still...wasn't fun while we were separated.

So I created an email address where anyone who chooses to can send me your cell number. I'll compile a list that I'll share with someone local in case I have a mishap between the Town of Rochester and the City of Rochester on Friday. It will only be used if we need to let you know about a change in plans.

So...please send an email to rfcwatcherweekend@gmail.com

Please include your screen name in case I won't recognize your real name ;) and when you'll be arriving in town...and anything else you think I need to know...

Thanks!  Looking forward to a great weekend!

So...I know Nor'easter put a crimp in everyone's expectations of slowing down to mellow watches with spot checks by now...but you know me...trying to keep things organized...

Do we want to meet by the library again?

If so, Kris suggested if anyone has any portable tables that could be set up closer to the wall & keep stuff out of the sun might it be a good idea to bring them.

Anyone have any ideas who else is bringing what?

Not much else happening around town other than Corn Hill that I can find. The Museum of Play has a boardwalk arcade exhibit going on if that's anyone's cup of tea.

If anyone knows of anything else feel free to chime in. Though we will most likely just hang and watch birds as we usually do...that is why we're there, after all ;)
