Title: The Eyas Naming Polls are Open Post by: Yarak on 07-Jun-14, 10:19:26 AM Quote It's time to vote for your favorite names for one of Beauty and Dot.ca's Eyases! The polls are open! We received 60 terrific name suggestions. The Rfalconcam's Naming Committee evaluated all submissions and pared them down to 7 names in each of the three categories: male, female, and gender-neutral. (The committee had planned... Winning male name: Mercury with 35 votes. Winning female name: Christa with 12 votes. Winning gender-neutral name: Genesee with 32 votes. What does this mean? One of the three eyases will be given the winning name from either the appropriate gender-specific poll or the gender-neutral poll, whichever received the most votes. If the eyas is male, he will be given the name Mercury because it received more votes than Genesee. If the eyas is female, she will be given the name Genesee because it received more votes than Christa. The eyas and its three siblings will be named when they are banded. Although Christa will not be used this year, it is still a great name for a falcon, and we'd like to thank George Liebmann of Greensboro, North Carolina for submitting it. The names of the people who submitted Mercury and Genesee will be announced at banding. Where do the other names come from, if we are not using all of the Top 3? Who provides the "extra" names? Seems to me we have 3 names already, and need a 4th... but what do I know!!! Anyway... Ta! Slainte! Title: Re: The Eyas Naming Polls are Open Post by: DoggyMom on 09-Jun-14, 11:08:28 AM Seems to me I see 4 eyas, too. Is one going to travel in cognito?
Title: Re: The Eyas Naming Polls are Open Post by: Donna on 09-Jun-14, 11:12:02 AM We are only naming 1 eyas. If the 1st one is female, it will be Genesee, if the 1st one is male, it will be Mercury! I think that is how it's done! Shaky correct me? :gum:

Ok I don't understand. Males are males, females are females (so far I understand), but I thought gender-neutral was if another name was needed or it wasn't determined for sure on male/female. If a male would be Mercury, why would a female go by the gender-neutral name and not the female name that came out on top? I realize Genesee was second by total votes, but why use a name designated at gender-neutral if it didn't have to be? It just doesn't seem right. :nono: Title: Re: The Eyas Naming Polls are Open Post by: Shaky on 09-Jun-14, 07:18:17 PM Our dog answers to Goofus more than Sparky.... Ok I don't understand. Males are males, females are females (so far I understand), but I thought gender-neutral was if another name was needed or it wasn't determined for sure on male/female. The gender is never determined for sure. There is always some doubt. But regardless of the amount of doubt, DEC always assigns a gender. So in your scenario, a gender-neutral name would never be used because DEC would never say they are not sure of the gender. Quote If a male would be Mercury, why would a female go by the gender-neutral name and not the female name that came out on top? I realize Genesee was second by total votes, but why use a name designated at gender-neutral if it didn't have to be? It just doesn't seem right. :nono: These are the rules that have been used for years. When name suggestions are solicited, we give everyone a chance to submit a name. Rather than limiting the choices to gender-neutral names because the gender of the eyases are not known at that time, we allow people the option of submitting a pair of gender-specific names. A fair poll is created for each of the three "gender" classes where the most popular name in each class is chosen. At this point, there have to be some objective criteria that only one name can meet. The first criterion is receiving the most votes, or in the case of a tie, receiving the most nominations (and in the case of a second tie, winning a coin toss). The second criterion is to be appropriate for the gender of the eyas. The name that meets these two criteria is the name that is given to the eyas. Genesee meets both criteria for a female eyas. Mercury meets both criteria for a male eyas. Last year, Rosetta meet both criteria for a female eyas. The year before, Orion met both criteria for a male eyas.
