Title: Voyager Found Injured in Kitchener, Ontario
Post by: AlisonL on 23-Jul-14, 04:37:00 AM
From the Canadian Peregrine Foundation website:

Territorial dispute ends up with some injuries! A 2013 Rochester female named Voyager has some injuries!

Mark Nash Reports:

July 21st - 2014

We do have some sad news to report. Yesterday, I was contacted by the Kitchener Waterloo humane society with reports of a downed peregrine that we assumed might be one of the young fledglings that was produced at the Sun Life nest site this season, and with only one surviving fledgling, we expected the worst. There is good news and bad news to share.

The good news, I asked for a photo of the birds leg bands to confirm the peregrines identity, and it turns out to be a sub-adult female, banded with Yellow and Red tape over its Silver USFW band and a Black 95 over Green BA. It's not one of the resident KW peregrines!!

The bad news, is that the peregrine has some serious injuries to the wing & wrist along with other obvious evidence of punctures very consistent to wounds sustained in battles with another raptor. The sub-adult peregrine female turns out to be a peregrine produced in Rochester New York in 2013, one named Voyager, donning a Black 95 over Green BA coloured leg band.

Rudy Kruppa from the CPF was kind enough to pick up Voyager from the KW Humane society and drove her to team members of the Owl Foundation that met him half way in between the long drive between Kitchener and Vineland. We are waiting for updated news on her status.

We have our fingers crossed for her.

A huge thank you to the KW humane society for calling us so quickly and to Rudy for picking her up and driving her to medial assistance so quickly!!

Again, another fantastic team effort of caring people!!!!

We are waiting on reports from the KW group as to the status of the resident adults at the KW nest site to see if there were any life sustaining injuries with them.

Fingers crossed that there was no serious injuries sustained on their end.

I hope Voyager's injuries are not as serious as they sound, and that she will be able to make a full recovery. Hoping for the very best for this beautiful young peregrine.

Oh no, how sad for Voyager. Seems our babies cross the border where there are so many falcons already, just like Rosetta did. I wish there was room for all. Be well sweet Voyager. <3  Getting crowded out there. :(  Praying for her and hope no others were injured!

Oh dear Lord. I'm hoping for the best.  Voyager is Beauty's daughter, after all.  She is fierce, with a fighting spirit.  Let's hope for a full recovery.  I started at candle group for her, called V.  You can find it at http://www.gratefulness.org/candles/candles.cfm?l=eng&gi=V (http://www.gratefulness.org/candles/candles.cfm?l=eng&gi=V)

She's so beautiful too.  In spite of what's happened, I'm so glad she's made it this far and I hope she recovers.  If she's got this much moxy at only a year and she heals well, she'll be a force to be reckoned with once she reaches adulthood.

While I can see she is still sporting sub-adult colors, it's interesting to see that she may have chest feathers like Beauty's and a cere like Dot.ca's.  She's a beautiful combination of her mom and dad.

So very sorry to have to report this.  Rest in peace, precious Voyager.   :crying: :crying: :crying:

!!! Very sad news to report about Voyager -the little Rochester N.Y. female retrieved in the KW area.
July 24, 2014 - Kitchener - Sun Life Centre

CPF Postmaster Reports:

July 24th - 2014
Voyager update:
Some sad news.

Marion reports this afternoon:
I was in contact with the Owl foundation today to get an update on Voyager and was told that she was examined on July 22nd. She had serious injuries to her “wrist/hand” or metacarpal bone,, it was completely destroyed in addition to the server bruising on her radial ulna. They contacted the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources and got the approval to put her down. She was put down yesterday - (July 23rd - 2014).

As an adult wild bird with such serious injuries they felt she would not have done well in captivity and would not be able to fly up to perches. Sadly, we agree the only humane thing to do was to euthanize her. They said she was 762 grams at intake and was very thin.

This is terrible news. I am so sorry for the loss of this courageous, beautiful young falcon. It sounds as if some time must have elapsed after Voyager was injured before she was found, for her to have lost so much weight. Poor Voyager. I wish they had been able to help her.

Thank you, FlaDonna, for emailing me this news before I read it for myself.

I'd like to share my reply to Donna, and her very wise answer...
"Thanks for the warning, Pal. I was just looking at her pictures on my wall calendar. Sadly these accidents happen all the time in the wild, but we're unaware of most of them. Therefore the creature suffers a cruel death. Thankfully she was found, was in good, caring hands and sent on her way the most humane way possible. All this is said with my wise mind. So why am I blubbering, and sick to my stomach?  :^("

Donna's reply was, "Because you reason with your mind and feel with your heart."

Many thanks to those who found and cared for Voyager. Larry, I'm especially sorry for your loss." She did, however, survive past that year mark, which is something to be acknowledged and celebrated.

So sorry to hear of the loss of Voyager, but, at least she got a chance to soar and do what falcons do.  She'll be in many hearts forever with all those we still remember today. . .  Christiane

Title: Voyager's Lessons for Us All
Post by: loheron on 25-Jul-14, 01:26:15 PM
Last year I had the privilege of naming one of the baby falcons at the Times Square Building in Rochester NY.
The name I chose for her was 'Voyager'. To me, it emphasized the adventurous nature of the peregrine falcon, and the best in spirit of people when they are moving forward with life to whatever our destiny is.
I learned today, that as often happens in nature, Voyager had to be euthanized in Canada after an apparently savage battle.
One in five peregrines makes it to year two. Voyager did not make it, but in her time, I'm sure, she carried on the spirit of the peregrine, and contributed her part in this recovering species' proud legacy and awesome future.

I'm so sorry, Larry.  Voyager was a beautiful Peregrine who'll never be forgotten by the many who loved her.

Well said, Larry.  I remember questioning the name of Voyager for a female at the time, but it was the perfect name for her, even though her voyage was brief.  I'm very sorry for your loss, and that of all the other rfalconcam fans as well.
