I will post more when I hear from her sister in law. At least it's over! Thanks Jeanne. Thanks Jeanne & Donna! Been sending healing thoughts... Title: Re: MAK's surgery Post by: Donna on 08-Apr-15, 01:58:13 PM OK, Sue just called me, MAK had the long surgery, they took a foot of her Colon out because she had so much scar tissue from her Hysterectomy and that scar tissue was pretty bad, it attached it's self to her bladder. They did what they can, tested it for leaks, (sounds weird) and she is in recovery. It was not a pleasant surgery for our MAK. This is what I know so far. It went pretty well for her, now she has to recover and take it easy! PHEW!!!
Title: Re: MAK's surgery Post by: Carol P. on 08-Apr-15, 02:12:29 PM At least it's over and she can rest and recover now.
Thanks Donna, Jeanne and Sue for the update! Title: Re: MAK's surgery Post by: amytraveler on 08-Apr-15, 02:18:37 PM Thanks so much for the update. Praying all goes well fro here on. Sounds like a difficult and extensive surgery
Title: Re: MAK's surgery Post by: jeanne on 08-Apr-15, 02:27:23 PM Donna, thank you so much! Sounds like a miserable surgery but at least it is done!
Title: Re: MAK's surgery Post by: Lynne in New Hampshire on 08-Apr-15, 02:32:19 PM Can only get better after all that!! She's a fighter and will be out watching Falcon's soon !! Prayers her way-thanks for updates!
Title: Re: MAK's surgery Post by: patsy6 on 08-Apr-15, 02:46:53 PM Glad to know the surgery is over and that she is in recovery. It won't be easy for her, but I'll bet this is the worst it'll be. And I think it's entirely fitting that she's being taken care of by the "Unity" health care system.
Title: Re: MAK's surgery Post by: PatriciaRose on 08-Apr-15, 02:54:06 PM From the sounds of it, MAK did excellent in surgery! Four hours is a good time and not uncommon for some attachment to bladder. And if they tested for leaks and they didn't find any that means she did not end up with an ostomy(opening thro stomach for waste to come out, while re-attached colon heals) and this is FANTASTIC! Which means she does not have to have any further surgery to re-connect in the future! My husband Frank had the surgery in Feb and wasn't as lucky and ended up with the ostomy(but it hasn't been that bad) and will go for the re-connect on April 23rd. Glad things went well for her!
Title: Re: MAK's surgery Post by: Joyce on 08-Apr-15, 02:58:34 PM I just spoke to MAK's sister-in-law. In addition to what Donna shared, MAK was not back in her room as of 2:30pm. Her doctor says she has to be up and moving right away at least three walks a day around the station. No rest for her. Her sis-in-law said she would hang a bird in front of her if that would help. That made me think...I still have Baron von Pefa on my fridge. Think I'll try that when I visit. LOL

I'm very weak and in quite a bit of pain and can hardly hold my phone up so this will be brief. I was a mess when they cut me open from what I hear-surgery took twice as long as it should have because of it. Thanks for all your kind word's and concerns. I walked to the end of the hall and back last night and am about to do that again in a few minutes. When I can do it I'll get on my laptop. I'm up for visitors for those of you who were asking. Love y'all! — feeling blessed.

I'm having so much gas pain that it has raised my blood pressure to a critical point. I also have a low grade fever and so hoping it's not the start of pneumonia. That's all for now!

Title: Re: MAK's surgery Post by: Donna on 23-Apr-15, 02:23:49 PM Update from MAK:
Hello my good friends and supporters! So I went to my surgeon this morning to get checked out and get my stitches and staples removed. Here's the story I was told of my surgery-he started out laparoscopically spending 1.5-2 hours removing scar tissue from a previous surgery. He ran into a hernia and an absess the size of an orange attached to my colon caused by severe diverticulitus. That's when he had to cut a 10 inch incision to remove those making the operation last 5.5 hours instead of the 2.5 hours he projected. He said if I had gone much longer with this I might not be here to tell the story. He also had to cut out a foot of my colon which was just be being strangled. I have shed the 30 lbs. of water weight I gained being on intravenous in the 6 day hospital stay. Although I still have swollen feet that seems to be resolving itself which in turn has lowered my blood pressure to much lower levels, but still a bit high. I go back to see him on May 28th. All in all, he thinks I'm doing well considering all that he had to do-my incision and drain site look good and hopefully only onward and upward from here. Title: Re: MAK's surgery Post by: Lynne in New Hampshire on 23-Apr-15, 02:29:53 PM :yahoo: Good News !! Do what they say and things will get better. Once you can move around the swelling should start going down !! Hang in there ! Waiting for our morning watch reports !!!
Title: Re: MAK's surgery Post by: patsy6 on 23-Apr-15, 02:37:28 PM Wow, MAK, it sounds like you really went through the mill. Perhaps you should celebrate the anniversary of your surgery as an additional or other birthday. The day you got a second chance at life. I have one of those birthdays. There's a reason why you're still here, and I, for one, am very glad, whatever it is!
Title: Re: MAK's surgery Post by: Kris G. on 23-Apr-15, 03:04:31 PM Great news! Walking as much as you can plus elevating your legs while sitting will help reduce the swelling in your feet. Sounds like things are on the right track!
Title: Re: MAK's surgery Post by: Dot_Forrester on 23-Apr-15, 03:43:36 PM 'm so happy to hear the checkup went well and you are feeling better. Nothing like a surprise surgery when you went expecting something simpler, right?? It's a darn good thing you went in when you did. Take good care of yourself and remember when you get frustrated that you might not have even been here. We're sure glad you are! Go MAK!

Title: Re: MAK's surgery Post by: MAK on 30-Apr-15, 07:45:45 PM  I gave myself a scare this week. My incision started draining a bit at the top of it and kept sticking to the binder I have to wear for 4-5 more weeks to keep things in place til they heal. I thought I had an infection and it looked like the top of my incision had opened up. I was freaking out-afraid to do much of anything cuz I thought my whole incision would split open and expose my guts! I called my surgeon's office Tuesday morning but he couldn't see me until today. The simple answer is that it looks like it's separated there because that's my new belly button! You'd think they'd tell you about something like that! The drainage is normal and the solution is that he wants me to wash the area with soapy water twice a day and sit in front of a fan to make sure it dries properly. I have to call him on Monday and if I want him to check it again next week he said he'd be happy to do so! Big PHEW! Love you guys!

I'll bet once that's out, the healing will go much faster. I'm thinking of you. Nora in Florida Me, too. Might want to ask if there are any stitches that you can't see while you are at it. About a year after my hysterectomy I had a tiny boil along the incision scar...and out came a piece of dissolvable suture. My periodontist didn't believe me when he did my gum surgery & used them...had to go back to have them removed...they never dissolved. Title: Re: MAK's surgery Post by: MAK on 07-May-15, 04:48:15 PM Saw doctor today, he took out the staple that was left behind in my belly button and also found a long dissolvable stitch in there so he pulled that out too. Said the staple must have been under a scab and that's why we missed it cuz I didn't find it until 4 days after I started washing the incision twice a day. It's been 4 weeks since my surgery making it the half way point of my recovery. I go see surgeon on May 28th and hope that I will be able to shed this binder and start driving again-I can't sit up straight when wearing it and I don't think it would be very safe to drive with my seat reclined. I should be good to go just in time for fledge watch! ;)

Title: Re: MAK's surgery Post by: MAK on 12-May-15, 08:59:43 PM Feeling a bit better every day Patty. Still have some drainage and soreness in the incision near my belly button area. Still can't sit up straight with this binder on so I have to reach to type, therefore I don't do much of that on my laptop. I can't sleep in my bed yet as it's very uncomfortable laying flat or on my side so my life these days is spent in my recliner. Still hoping to be healed in time for fledge watch. Thanks for all the support everyone, I appreciates it!!

It'll get better every night just like I've gotten better every day. I'm hoping that when I see my surgeon next Thursday I can stop wearing the binder and hopefully drive. It's a very low car that I had trouble getting out of before so I have concerns with that cuz I don't want to strain myself-I'm still healing on the inside so I won't jeopardize my progress. Another wait and see thing! I will definitely have someone with me when I do try it just in case I need help to get back out the car. I don't want to be stuck in my car yelling "I got in my car and I can't get out"

MAK is in the hospital again. She was admitted for multiple blood clots in both her lungs. She was having trouble breathing and knew she had to go. The 1 big clot has done some damage and they have an IV in both arms. She will most likely be there a few days to a week. Blood thinners are in her future maybe for 6 months or forever. She was in good spirits last night considering. I wish her a speedy recovery.....again!!! Poor MAK! Title: Re: MAK's surgery Post by: Carol P. on 27-May-15, 07:48:39 AM Get better soon MAK! :rose:

I'm home from the hospital and so thankful for all the peeps that care about me and pray for me. I'm sure that's what got me through my surgery recovery and this latest scare. It will take weeks for the blood clots in my lungs and legs to dissolve and get absorbed into my body. I'll be on Xarelto (blood thinner) for at least 3 months and will be having lung function testing. The echocardiogram showed the right side of my heart is a bit enlarged but since the ventricle looked normal they aren't too worried about it. I'm a lucky lady to be alive and to have so many friends out there pulling for me.Thank you so very much!!!! love and peace MAK  Title: Re: MAK's surgery Post by: Tapper Gal on 29-May-15, 08:12:21 AM Excellent news!!! :mbanana: goodnews: :abs-cheers: :bravo: :yahoo:
