Title: Woodmen Falconcam, Omaha, Nebraska 2017
Post by: AlisonL on 08-Feb-17, 12:13:19 AM
I have not seen much activity at the Woodmen nest lately. One of the birds was at the nest today, but only allowed one view of bands before leaving.

Another peregrine visited Omaha in January, spending time at a building not far from the Woodmen Tower. She was identified by Jackie Fallon as Chayton, banded black/red 17/Z, from a Kansas City, Missouri area nest.

She may also have visited the Lincoln nest, since an intruder banded black/red showed up there. It was not possible to read the bands. Alley took a dim view of this incident, and made sure the intruder moved on.

I was looking through the Woodmen archive and during a shift change, saw the four eggs and one looked like it may have a pip!  Guess it's about time, as the first egg came on 3-20.

Update: The Woodmen website says 3 hatched this weekend.  Sure looked like four to me.

All four hatched since yesterday afternoon.  This is feeding this morning around 10:30.

SHOCKER

http://magazine.outdoornebraska.gov/2017/05/another-shocker-eggs-abandoned/ (http://magazine.outdoornebraska.gov/2017/05/another-shocker-eggs-abandoned/) More

In another unexpected twist, the Capitol’s Peregrine Falcons appear to have abandoned their five eggs shortly after they completed their clutch.  The pair had just welcomed their fifth and final egg late on 27 April or early on 28 April.   Events seemed to be playing out as expected as the birds’ commenced the month-long incubation period.  Then, inexplicably, the falcons left the eggs unattended Sunday (30 April) morning in the cold and rainy weather.  Both birds have essentially been away ever since.  The only reasonable conclusion is that the birds have now abandoned their clutch.

*No explanation why this happened, someone did say maybe intruder!!!

There was an intruder spotted there on Saturday, Sunday and Monday by a watcher.  I expect there has been a change here or is about to be.  Both were quite attentive to the eggs prior to that.

Good news here!

A Foursome! And the Banding Day is Set

It looks like the fourth falcon egg hatched last night – this morning we spotted four heads trying to get food at the first feeding of the day.

Banding Day Scheduled
Nebraska Games and Parks and Raptor Recovery Center like to schedule the banding about 20 days from hatching. When the eyasses are 20 days old, they’re strong enough to handle being out of the nest for a bit, but not strong enough to fly away or fight being poked and prodded.

We’ve scheduled the 2017 banding for Friday, May 19. New this year: a Facebook live video! We’ll be documenting the banding as it happens, so you’ll want to log into Facebook that morning. We’ll announce the specific time at a later date.

Naming Contest Coming
During the banding, the falcon experts will determine the sex of each bird (based on their size – the male falcons are smaller than the female ones), and they’ll be banded so that we can trace their journey throughout their lives.

We’ll launch the naming contest on WoodmenLife’s Facebook page right after the banding on that Friday. Stay tuned for more details!

June 13 2017:  AdorABEL (band number B/88) was found lifeless on the 5th floor landing of the WoodmenLife Tower today.

In happier news, ABEL (P/87) was found alive at 16th & Farnam, and he was delivered back to the roof of the tower.

The other two falcon chicks were spotted on the ledge yesterday and are presumed to be fine as they start to fly away.   :crying:

WoodmenLife   :crying:

It is with a heavy heart that we announce that Charity, our female falcon nesting at the WoodmenLife Tower, has died after a collision.

Charity arrived in 2015 and mated with Mintaka, our male falcon.

The falcon cam last spotted a bird 11 days ago. It is believed that Mintaka is searching for a new mate. We will know for sure if Mintaka has chosen to keep the WoodmenLife Tower as his home if he returns with his new mate by late February or early March to make their new nest.

See how this story unfolds at falcons.woodmenlife.org in the coming months.

I’ve watched this nest for years and was so sad to read of the loss of Charity.  I do hope Mintaka finds a new mate and returns to this nest site in the future. Fly free, Charity..you’ll be missed.  :sorrow:

It is very sad to have lost Charity. She was a very beautiful peregrine, a wonderful mother to her chicks, and a loyal mate to Mintaka.  :crying:

According to the Woodmen site, she had a collision with a window while chasing a pigeon.

It has been difficult to know what was happening at the nest this winter. In previous years, I have usually seen a bird at the other nest on many occasions during the winter, and sometimes one at each nest. This year, with the five small cams down since October of last year, there has appeared to be little activity at the nest.

The last time I saw the bird I believe to be Charity was on December 13:

Apart from some back views through a very dirty window, I have not seen much activity at the nest.

One was on top of the nest box a couple of days ago:
