Title: Woodmen Tower nest
Post by: Donna on 18-Mar-10, 01:13:38 PM
Are they nesting?

Last week the box looked flat inside, but yesterday I noticed that the pebbles had been arranged into a "bowl" and there were many feathers on the right side. It's so nice to see Zeus and Hera fixing up the nest box. This will be their fifth season together.

Hera laid first egg Wednesday, 3-31.  I looked at the cams around 2:30 pm central time and she was standing over it.

All four are now venturing up and down the ledge.  Finally caught a shot of all 4 with one adult; two of the four are back in the box in this pic.  Dangerous time for these guys, traipsing on that ledge.

Title: Re: Woodmen Four get names
Post by: Donna on 23-Jun-10, 07:02:30 PM
Welcome Ponca, Oto, Kiowa and Dakota

The Woodmen Tower falcons have names. This season, the young peregrines were named in honor of four of the many Native American tribes located in the great plains. They are:

    * Ponca, male, band #25/C
    * Oto, male, #24/C
    * Kiowa, female, #51/H
    * Dakota, female, #52/H

The four young falcons bring the total number of birds hatched by Zeus and Hera to 19.

The falcons have left the nest and will be flying soon. You can still see them on the cameras occasionally.

Zeus was born in 1994, Rochester NY (#X/R).  Hera appeared in 2006, after Zeus' long-time mate Amelia died.  Hera is unbanded.  (This from the Woodmen website.)

Small world, after all!  I had just wanted to update this page with the 'lost' pics on the eggs and eyas, and then I got to reading more closely on their website.  Zeus has fathered a bunch of babies, that's for sure.  At least Woodmen now has a statement asking for folks to report any sightings of their offspring.  And their webcam is okay with minimal sound, but Rochester still has the best!

Thanks Kris, for that news clip.  One of the five has ventured OUT of the nest box this morning.

Three of the five are on the ledge getting fed right now (8:15 Central Time), and the two in the box are livid!

From Woodmen's FB page:  We are proud to announce the names of the newest batch of Woodmen Tower falcon chicks. The young peregrines were named in honor of five Omaha streets, all of which run through downtown. Their names are:

Cass, female, band #46/U
 Harney, female, #47/U
 Farnam, male, #07/R
 Dodge, male, #08/R
 Douglas, male, #09/R

These names represent a part of Omaha’s history – the people who used to live on them, and those who lived before our time.

The winning name suggestions were submitted by Travis Wurtele, a sales manager at Union Pacific Railroad.

R.I.P. Douglas

This morning, Joel Jorgensen from the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission received a call from James Thiele, who is with the USDA – Wildlife Services, reporting a deceased falcon had been found in downtown Omaha. The falcon was Douglas, purple band 1126 14499 and black/red bands 09/R, one of the male Peregrine Falcons hatched this year from atop the Woodmen Tower. He was found on a sidewalk along Douglas Street a couple blocks from Woodmen of the World. The bird's wing was broken and it appeared death may have resulted from a collision, possibly with a building window.

As you probably have noticed the falcon chicks have moved out of camera range. The remaining four, two females (Cass and Harney), and the two males (Farnam and Dodge), are still around learning how to hunt from their mother and father. If you are ever out walking near the Woodmen Tower, you could get lucky and hear one of the chicks call for their parent, or even see one in flight.

More times than not, we have no idea what becomes of the Woodmen offspring.  At least we know that Douglas is soaring with so many others we have lost just this year.  Appreciate your posting the news, Kris.
