Title: GVAS News
Post by: Donna on 07-Jul-17, 07:22:02 PM
Some more falcons, the little ones. Fell out of a rotting soffit on an old house in City of Canandaigua. The first two, in white down when picked up were joined by their sibling a couple days later.

The year of the falcons. These Kestrel babies were picked up in a driveway in Canandaigua City. Wierd location for Kestrels. Old house with lots of big trees. Not near open meadows for hunting. Old house is probably the nest location. Rotted out and squirrel chewed holes under edge of roof. Possible nest locations. A third one fell out two days later. Now there are three.

Bay Bridge Peregrine Falcon that took a swim in the bay has new jewelry and has been cleared for takeoff. It will be a soft release from its rehab site. Banded with state and federal bands 7/12/17. Building up with extra food for imminent release. (But can he hunt on his own)????

So my baby falcons I originally thought to be kestrels are growing up to be merlins instead. Not getting the chestnut brown coloration of kestrels and different facial marking. Bigger by a bit too.,

Band 89/BA would make it a female following 87/BA and 88/BA for Charlotte and Rachel, respectively.

OK 89 BA but she really has not learned to hunt and they are just going to let her go?? Am I wrong?

The others that have been released after rehab have done fine.

Yeah but this one has not been in long enough to know how to catch food!! Just last week they said she wasn't getting it! She's going to want hand outs! She probably should have been put back a day or so after but I guess they were afraid the same thing would happen to her but I highly doubt it. Unless injured, let them go! That's just me!!

If they haven't taught her to hunt 'successfully' then she will likely starve to death.  Seen it happen  many times - juvie released - had no training from parents and none in care and found dead 10 days later.

I think this was handled all wrong-she should have been released the following day somewhere near where she was found. Last week the rehabber was complaining that she wouldn't take the lure and he/she was frustrated that the juvie was happy to gorge itself when hand fed. I don't see how it had enough time to learn how to hunt and I'm afraid this one will probably die of starvation. Sigh... :aaarggh:

I don't see how we'll know after release, most are not seen again it seems. Look at Jemison?! BTW, anyone know how Seabreeze is?
