Title: Houghton-Hancock Lift Bridge, Michigan Peregrines Post by: AlisonL on 16-Aug-17, 01:25:29 AM In 2012, two nest boxes were installed on the Houghton-Hancock Lift Bridge, one on each bridge tower. The following year, a pair of peregrines showed up for the first time.
This year, they raised three chicks, who were banded on June 23 and were named Hank, Esther and Bridgette. Two of the beautiful juvies came back to the nest for a visit. I have not seen any of the birds for several weeks, so I believe that they may have migrated. However, this evening I found an unwelcome visitor at one of the two nests. Once, only the tail and wingtips were visible as the owl perched on the cam, but earlier this month the GHO showed up again around 6 p.m. one evening, and this was no short visit. The owl was still there at 2 a.m., and may have stayed all night.
These birds are beautiful in their own right, but they can be deadly to peregrines.
