Title: Austin, Texas Peregrines Post by: AlisonL on 03-Mar-18, 06:21:34 PM For the last eight years, there has been a resident falcon on the tower of the University of Texas at Austin. She has lived there alone, although on occasion there have been male peregrines passing through. She has become known as Tower Girl. She is unbanded, so it will never be known where she came from, or how old she is.
But this year, Tower Girl may perhaps have found a mate. She has been provided with a nest box, and all of a sudden there is also a webcam. (https://picload.org/image/daogolrl/tower-girl-3a.jpg) I found her visiting the nest box several times today: (https://picload.org/image/daogolgw/austin-mar-3-1a.jpg) (https://picload.org/image/daogolrr/austin-mar-3-3a.jpg) https://biodiversity.utexas.edu/resources/falcon-cam (https://biodiversity.utexas.edu/resources/falcon-cam) The story of Tower Girl: http://www.mystatesman.com/news/opinion/herman-long-last-motherhood-approaching-for-falcon/J7kxYLKjxLDbFKpwuQbAPN/ (http://www.mystatesman.com/news/opinion/herman-long-last-motherhood-approaching-for-falcon/J7kxYLKjxLDbFKpwuQbAPN/) Title: Re: Austin, Texas Peregrines Post by: MAK on 03-Mar-18, 09:12:04 PM I hope it works out for Tower Girl and she finally gets to be a mom!

Title: Re: Austin, Texas Peregrines Post by: Kris G. on 12-Mar-18, 02:19:44 PM Tower Girl is hunkered down in the nest box. Did she do some egg laying this weekend? On BCAW, they posted a pic of the male and said they think there’s at least one egg. Title: Re: Austin, Texas Peregrines Post by: AlisonL on 12-Mar-18, 02:31:32 PM Tower Girl is hunkered down in the nest box. Did she do some egg laying this weekend? It's hard to tell, since only a portion of the inside of the nest is visible. A little while ago: (https://picload.org/image/daldoowi/austin-mar-12-2a.jpg) And a few minutes ago: (https://picload.org/image/daldooww/austin-mar-12-3a.jpg) I so much hope for Tower Girl that there is an egg. Title: Re: Austin, Texas Peregrines Post by: Donna on 13-Mar-18, 07:47:40 AM Tower Girl! :) Aw!
Title: Re: Austin, Texas Peregrines Post by: DebInTexas on 14-Mar-18, 04:51:44 PM I was watching her about 15 mins ago, and she gingerly rose up from the scrape and turned around, then did that rocking motion while settling back down, like she was getting the brood patch in place. I've seen a male bring her food to the box patio only once, which she took and flew off to eat, I assume. That was back on the 3rd or 4th. Wish someone was observing and reporting from the ground, cause there sure doesn't seem to be any bonding at the nestbox.
Title: Re: Austin, Texas Peregrines Post by: carly on 14-Mar-18, 05:52:00 PM I wonder if the male that was courting her has now left and gone back home to his real nest site? Texas is known for migrating falcons to spend the off season.
I see someone laying in the nest box. Be nice if she did have a permanent mate. Title: Re: Austin, Texas Peregrines Post by: Tapper Gal on 14-Mar-18, 06:24:20 PM My fingers are crossed for this beauty,I am hoping for the best!!!!
Title: Re: Austin, Texas Peregrines Post by: carly on 03-Apr-18, 09:30:59 PM No one is ever here when I check. I do see her there the odd time but no male ever for the last month and no eggs or she'd be incubating by now.

I just looked and caught this pic..looks like he/she’s incubating now (https://s18.postimg.org/no6ri8pop/2_EECF066-_A241-4949-_A014-4_E5303_CD95_DD.jpg) (https://postimages.org/) Title: Re: Austin, Texas Peregrines Post by: Kris G. on 06-Apr-18, 11:18:10 AM Just caught her standing then repositioning onto eggs. Hard to see any eggs because the scrape is low but she definitely lowered then rocked back and forth like they do when positioning onto eggs.

She laid 4 eggs last year as well, all were infertile. It's too bad, if she could find a juvie he might stick around. They don't nest in that area of Texas, they only over winter there ...save for this rare female.
Title: Re: Austin, Texas Peregrines Post by: carly on 06-Apr-18, 03:11:11 PM She's back now. I have to keep this cam up and see if anyone else shows up.
Title: Re: Austin, Texas Peregrines Post by: carly on 06-Apr-18, 03:18:28 PM Something caught her attention, now she's up and outside looking up in the air. I feel bad for her, I wonder if they consider giving her a foster chick to raise if it turns out she is on her own. And after some preening she flew off.
