Title: LATE COURTSHIP?
Post by: Abacab on 25-Mar-10, 07:32:16 AM
If memory serves me , Mariah had already laid eggs by now.?
I know Beauty & Archer have been spotted at the box, but are there any signs they are nesting other places? Hats off to Shaky and everyone associated with this site. It blows the old Kodak one away.

I don't have my full chart here at work, but the one posted in the old yahoo board has a 1st egg range from March 24-April 9 for the M&K years-so B&A aren't actually behind schedule, though Archer was later arriving than Kaver used to be.  Don't know how that will affect things.  The ground watchers may have seen them elsewhere, but the courtship displays at TS seem to me to be typical for the chosen scrape.  Time will tell...this is my first time closely watching a new pair set up a new territory at a previously unused location, so despite watching here since 2004, I'm learning something new every day...

Congrats on your first post on the new forum Abacab.  To add to Ei's post, The Watchers have seen no evidence of another site being chosen by A&B.  They are most active around the Times Square Bldg and the nest box located there.

Keep looking for that first egg!   :D

Can someone identify?

It's Beauty...she's been there for quite some time now...

Hi Abacab,

You can also check the topic "Pictures from the Rfalconcam cameras"
http://rfalconcam.com/forum/index.php?topic=1096.0

That's where members post and identify. Study the photos and you will start to see differences.

A quick way to check when you can't see the band ID - Beauty has more stripe marks on her chest, and salmon coloring.  They appear all the way up to her neck.  Archer's chest is more bright white.  Archer has more white above the cere (part of the beak).  Beauty's moustache (sideburns) are not as narrow as Archer's.

Good luck!

Hey Joyce doesn't Archer have a white spot on the back of one of his wings?

Right now Archer does.  Last year he had one too, but then it disappeared.  So I don't think it is a permanent ID mark, but if we only see the back of a falcon on cam, and it has a white spot on the right wing, we can assume it's Archer.

I believe the white feather in Archer's scapulars is a permanent identifier.  When it disappeared last year, it was due to molting.  Since it reappeared this year, it is apparently a feather which will always grow in white.

It's a great way to identify Archer!

Thanks Marcia.  Always something new to learn.
