Title: Live Video & New Camera Page In Time For Hatching
Post by: Yarak on 14-May-10, 10:55:26 AM
Year after year we've been asked why we didn't provide a live video feed from the Rochester Falconcam. There were a variety of financial and technical issues that kept us from offering video, and frankly we've preferred to concentrate on offering the highest quality still images available on any nature-oriented webcam site. But...

Check out the new Video stream and All Cameras view on the Rochester Falconcam! Go to the main page and refresh your browser, then click the Camera link at the top of the page and choose the Video Stream to view live video and audio from Camera 2.
Shaky and Kenn worked hard to get this up and running in time for everyone to watch the hatching this year. Don't forget to thank them!

Okay -- I'm going to show my sawdust brain... How do you "login", to be involved with the running commentary on the new live video page? I don't know what those different symbols represent -- I think there are four of them up to the right of the streaming video... Help! :-[

The logons are for Twitter, Facebook, AOL Instant Messaging (AIM) and MySpace. If you have accounts on one or more of those services you can log into them by clicking the appropriate icon. That allows you to post a short message on the "Social Stream" for the video. Note however that every time you post there, a copy of your post gets sent to whichever service(s) you've logged into, along with a link back to the Rfalconcam feed on Ustream. So if you're not into making lots of Tweets or updates to Facebook or MySpace, you might want to limit your use of this feature...

Logging in with your AIM account doesn't post anything back on AIM as far as I know. I haven't logged on to AIM in ages, but I recall that it didn't post my IMs any place where someone could see them.

I wonder if instead of using Ustream's social media chat service we could port the Ajax chat that we use on the Forum here into a frame on the Video Stream page? That way everyone could use their forum logon to post their comments on the video stream.

In addition to appearing on the Streaming Video page (http://rfalconcam.com/rfc-main/streamView.php) of the Rfalconcam site, the video appears on the Rfalconcam channel on Ustream's site (http://www.ustream.tv/channel/rochester-falcons-at-times-square-nest-box). The Ajax chat can only be put on the Rfalconcam site. This would leave the Ustream site with either a separate Social Media chat or none at all. Since we can't dictate which page people choose to view our video, we should keep the same chat feature on both pages so everyone is participating in the same conversation. The Social Media chat also does a great job of spreading the word about Rfalconcam on the Social Networking sites, which will hopefully attract more people to Rfalconcam.

I want to start this note off by saying it's not a complaint...I am WAY happier with an occasional blip in the live stream than having none at all. It's just something I have learned about my computer & Ustream to help others who may experience the same problem. (oddly, the evil work computer doesn't have a problem 'cause it's hooked into a T-1 line)
I'm on DSL (I'm sure the same will be true for dial-up) and my bandwidth isn't spectacular. So, whenever Ustream "polls" for a new ad or social media chat content, the video pauses momentarily. When it does both at the same time the video will completely freeze and reload. The best way I've found to minimize that effect is to go to the actual Ustream page (link under the Rfalconcam embedded video) and use the Pop-out option (link at the top right of the picture). That loads a separate window with just the video and no chat. It still blips when it's "polling" for a new ad, but FAR less often than with the "chat" running too. And I have learned watching other sites with Ustream that the longer you leave it running the fewer ads it shows.
Yikes! That's the first time I've heard either of them! Beauty was just kakking-she sounded like a duck!

Yikes! That's the first time I've heard either of them! Beauty was just kakking-she sounded like a duck! What really sounds like "quack quack" is that small comment that comes after you hear wings and before a bird appears on cam to cover the eggs. Maybe, "Hi, eggs!" or "1, 2, 3 . . ." in peregrine?

Another plus to the pop-up screen...it's larger, but can be re-sized to be able to see the 5 mini-cams AND Reha Mae & Tiago's bunch!
Title: Re: Live Video & New Camera Page In Time For Hatching
Post by: Dumpsterkitty on 15-May-10, 10:58:54 AM
I am NOT addicted...much! :hyper:
One other note for slow connections...I've also noticed the stream will start blipping when a large number of new viewers arrive. Resist the urge to refresh! Refreshing will only reset your ad timer to more frequent! It will resolve once the number of new viewers levels off.
I wonder who Archer was just kakking at? I could hear him in the distance. Beauty noticed but didn't seem alarmed...

I think that's on Shaky's to do list once there's something more to see...I think they'll be on youtube. Meanwhile, Ustream does archive the footage...you'll find them on the Ustream direct page under the picture. But each one is HOURS long...

As a start, I would suggest quitting your browser (close all browser windows on PC) and start over. If that doesn't work, try another browser.

It's working for me on 6 different browsers. Try quitting and restarting your browser.

I am logged into Facebook and am able to compose a message. However, when I submit it, I am told that it will be posted when approved by the "owner." I've done this a couple of times but it never shows up. Any idea what I am missing here? Kapi in VT

Sounds like you've configured the Ustream link to Facebook to require you to approve your Ustream messages before the will post to your facebook page.

This may or may not be the same problem...there's an Optimum online ad that's been interrupting my video. Whenever that ad comes up the screen goes blank...have to use the refresh button to start it again. It works fine then until that ad comes up again. I know there's no control over the ad content, but if there's anyone to contact about it, it is aggravating! Oh, and the General Hospital ad that plays even when you don't accidentally click on the ad...

I never thought I'd be able to watch our falcons in real time -- FalKenn and Shaky are phenomenal! And way techier (is that a word?) than me! I'm having the same problem as Carla -- I logged in to Facebook and tried to log in from the streaming video, but it says I'm not logged in. I did do a post from FB, but of course it stays on that page. Don't have a burning need to post to the streaming video page, but it's frustrating not to be able to figure it out :(
At any rate, it is fantastic to hear all the sounds -- wish we had had this in years past -- it does make me miss Mariah, but glad Beauty and Archer are off to such a good start! Vandrefalk

Sorry that you are also having difficulty with the ustream chat but it is comforting to know that I am not the only one here with a geek-IQ in the single digits. Yesterday, when I tried to post, I was told that my message had been sent to an unnamed "owner" for approval...never to be seen again. Today, I have been told that I have exceeded my daily message quota! Like you, I just find it frustrating to be unable to do something that really can't be all that difficult. And, I have wasted way too much time trying. Kapi in VT

Check the Ustream application on your facebook account and verify that you have given ustream permission to post updates to your facebook page.

Carla, I have tried this. In fact, I appear to be "registered" as it welcomes me and shows me as logged on by name. However, when I try to submit a message, it either sends it off to be "approved by owner" (and it is never seen again) or it tells me I have exceeded my daily message quota.
When I try to enter Ustream from Facebook, the "go to application" link on the Ustream page just takes me to a blank page. Shaky had suggested changing some settings on the application page but I can't get to anywhere that shows me settings to change.

When logged in to facebook, go to this URL .
http://www.facebook.com/editapps.php?ref=mb
You should see Ustream.tv on the list. Click on Edit Settings on the right. A window will pop up. Click on Additional Permissions and check both boxes. Click Okay.
Now log off facebook and quit your browser. Restart it and go to the rfalconcam streaming video page. Then click on the facebook check box to log in.

I'm a novice at this whole social networking thing, but I did manage to log into the ustream thing under twitter (once I remembered my password). Anyway...maybe you could set up a twitter account to use for this?

Something is not set up correctly if you have only one check box: You should have boxes for Access my data when I'm not using the application and Publish content to my Wall

The process involves a popup for facebook. I had the problem because the browser was blocking the popup. I can't speak to every browser but when you click on the facebook icon to post a comment, examine your browser for an indication that a popup was blocked and take the appropriate actions, according to your browser to allow the popup. That fixed my problem. Larry O
