Title: See The Baby Falcons! Albertville Man Sets Up Live Feed Of Nest (Kestrels)
Post by: Donna on 15-May-10, 06:12:27 AM
ALBERTVILLE, AL - An Albertville man is giving the world a view of something unique atop his shed. It's not every day you get to see baby Kestrel Falcons grow up! Thousands of people are keeping a close eye on their daily progress, too.

Jay Mostella noticed earlier this week that a falcon had made a nest in his shed. He found that two of the three babies had fallen behind a pole, and were unable to get out or be fed. Mostella did some quick research and decided to step in to help.

Mostella pulled the babies out of the hole and hand-fed them worms
, because they didn't have enough strength to stand on their own. After feeding the babies, he and his family put them back in the nest. Mostella then set up a live webcam so he could watch them and see if the mother returned to care for them. She did, and so did the father.

Title: Question for Kestrel experts
Post by: Donna on 16-May-10, 09:00:06 AM
I was talking to Jay last night, the guy who runs this Kestrel Cam. He didn't know he had Kestrels til they were over a week old. They are in his shed. The mom and dad come through a hole in shed. His question is: Will the babies follow mom and dad and eventually go out through the hole they use? This is all new to him and wants to make sure all find their way out. Also, do Kestrels have to be reported and banded? The cam is down right now but right in back of the 3 is a gap and they like to go in there. If they go any further, they will fall into the wall. He was going to fix it so they can't get trapped but is afraid if he tries, the mom won't come back. Should he fix it or just leave it and see what happens? Thanks for any answers.

The Kestrels had 5 babies, 2 died when they fell into a crevice and mom couldn't reach them. Jay fed the 3rd worms and crickets and Tuzzy is doing well now. The mom made this nest inside his shed, usually Kestrels don't make nests, they just use whatever is there already, pebbles, stones or use an abandoned nest. There is a small hole in which mom and dad use to enter the shed. Will the 3 babies try and use the same hole to get out when they fledge, which should be in a week or so? Jay, who is a young lad is trying to learn all this and wants them to be safe. Mom and dad never stay in the shed, they hang out on the tree in back of it.

Pictures of Jay feeding the kestrels who were wedged in a hole. When he rescued them, they were very mal-nourished. 2 died but these 3 are doing well and should fledge soon.
