Title: Paradise Post by: MAK on 15-May-10, 10:48:40 AM Just thought I'd share what I've observed while at my nephews farm in Nunda,NY. He has 9 acres of land' Off the back of his house is a great view of hills and 3 ponds just on the other side of his property where Canadian geese, red winged blackbirds, deer, groundhogs and a mystery white bird that I haven't identified yet. Out in the front yard I filled 3 bird feeders and have attracted white crowned sparrows, chipping sparrows, house sparrows, morning doves, cardinals, blue jays,1 yellow warbler, gold finches, red and grey squirrels, chipmunks and rabbits. OMG I'm loving life here in what I've named paradise. Oh, did I mention they have 2 horses named Filly and Lacey,a barncat named Stubby (so named cuz she has a stub for a tail)which came with the house 2 yrs. ago when they bought it. And last but not least their dog named Brandy and 2 house cats Lucky and Tinkerbell.(2 goldfish also) Phew so much to keep up with here! Having a great time!
Title: Re: Paradise Post by: MAK on 15-May-10, 01:52:13 PM I just spotted a kestrel on a fence post out in the horse pasture. I forgot to mention on my previous post that I flushed a pheasant out of the tall grass in the field behind the house yesterday while riding through on the atv. This morning I saw a northern flicker in the backyard eating ants no doubt. I also watched a turkey vulture soar over the ponds. Ahhh a nature lovers paradise!

I'm sitting all week at my dads house on the lake. He has 2 dogs, 2 weird frogs that live underwater in a tank in his house, 3 gerbils...a Bear in the back woods and some deer. I'm hoping to get a glimpse of the Bear soon. Lots of SNAKES..so I run like the wind up the path to his house, praying I don't step on one or SEE one. I'm creeped out by the snakes but so far, haven't seen any. Lots of feeders in his yard and I'm not good at ID's yet. I'll get there yet. HAVE FUN. Title: Re: Paradise Post by: Donna on 15-May-10, 07:30:17 PM I just spotted a kestrel on a fence post out in the horse pasture. Gonna check out all the bird houses also to see who's home. His house is set back in the woods and he has no shades on any windows. Tonight, I'll go around and put towels up on all the "necessary" windows. I'm no exhibitionist. :o  Title: Re: Paradise Post by: MAK on 15-May-10, 07:57:48 PM Right now there are 4 white tailed deer and 2 wild turkeys on the property beyond the ponds out back. Title: Re: Paradise Post by: MAK on 16-May-10, 07:26:40 PM  Today I saw a mom and pop Canadian geese with their 5 babies swimmimng on one of the ponds way outback. I also saw a gorgeous red tail hawk being dive bombed by a red winged blackbird. 3 deer were in the backyard this morning. At the feeders I saw a red bellied woodpecker and a white breasted nuthatch joining the crowd. For some reason there were chimney swifts flying in and out of the garage. I found no nest so I can only assume they were eating the flying insects(of which there are many) that were congregated in there. Weather was sunny and a bit cool. That's it for now. :gum:
Title: Re: Paradise Post by: valhalla on 16-May-10, 08:05:59 PM You planning to take pictures of any of this, little piggy?? I'd love to see the spread you are on!

Has Archer been there at all to greet his new family? I'm losing track as I am hardly home this week. Sleeping at Dads has not been fun. Who on God's Great Earth would say.."OH, the dogs have to sleep on the bed". They have a double bed, 2 huge labs, who take up all the room. I sleep on about a 12 inch wide piece of mattress. I got rear ends in my face, tongues lapping my mouth and barking to go out in the middle of the night. I think I slept maybe 15 hours since Sat night. I tried the couch but they follow and both jump up. Can't lock them out of room or they BARK to get in. I can't wait until Sunday when I can be home in my nice comfy Waterbed. I can see spoiling your dogs but THIS IS RIDICULOUS! Ethan is a yellow lab, he was the best dog ever when my dad got him as a seeing eye reject. He never barked as he was trained not to. Then he met Josie, the choc lab and he learned to bark and bark. Josie has been through behavior training and it didn't work. When I try to get her off the bed, she growls at me. This is what I have to deal with all week. I'd rather sleep with a bear. The only good of this week is I'm seeing lots of birds in his yard. Yesterday while out back, early am, I heard this loud crack, it was just getting light out and I saw beyond the cluster of forest my dad has in his backyard, a dark figure fall to the ground with a thud. I believe it was a bear in a tree and the branch gave out. Then I could hear the rustling of him taking off deeper into the woods. I wish it was lighter out. He probably fell from about 50 feet up. :surprise: Title: Re: Paradise Post by: valhalla on 19-May-10, 08:00:35 AM Donna - I don't think Beauty has let Archer on those babies yet, but she's going to have to do so soon (potty and all that stuff)!
Title: !Q Post by: MAK on 19-May-10, 08:17:35 AM  Hey Donna I have the same problem in bed with the dog. They have a nice big king sized bed with lots of pillow top comfort but I only get about a foot of it myself cuz the dog has to sleep right on top of me so I can't move. She's no light weight either being part black lab and some kind of hound. I especially like it when she wakes me up by licking my armpit! No pictures unfortunately my camera won't work for me. This morning I found one of their fish expired. Good grief I hope the kids don't get too upset. Anyway, yesterday I saw a pileated woodpecker. The chimney swifts are trying to make a nest in the garage. I say good luck with that cuz when the folks get home that garage door won't be open all day while they're at work. Still lovin' it here in paradise. Sorry it's not the same for you. Hang in their my fellow piggy! :gum:
Title: Re: Paradise Post by: valhalla on 19-May-10, 08:31:02 AM Don't feel bad ladies - one Siamese cat (Bart!) used to take up the entire middle of the bed. Rich and I are still finding ourselves surprised when we bump into each other in the middle of the night
