Animal control gave us the choice of having them carted off (i.e., destroyed) and leaving them alone. But my downstairs neighbors have two dogs. So we built a little maternity ward for her out of two endlessly heavy slabs of glass brick that were lying in the yard near her corner; the dogs shouldn't be able to get in, she can get in and out OK, and she has a luxurious back yard corner.

The young are weaned between 70 and 125 days, when they detach from the teat and leave the pouch. The opossum lifespan is unusually short for a mammal of its size, usually only two to four years. Senescence is rapid. So were they leaving the pouch for the first time maybe? |
