Title: Anyone have any baby possum experience?
Post by: dale on 15-May-10, 04:51:32 PM
A possum just had babies in my back yard. Animal control gave us the choice of having them carted off (i.e., destroyed) and leaving them alone. But my downstairs neighbors have two dogs. So we built a little maternity ward for her out of two endlessly heavy slabs of glass brick that were lying in the yard near her corner; the dogs shouldn't be able to get in, she can get in and out OK, and she has a luxurious back yard corner.

I thought opossums had pouches and carried their babies with them? Nice of you to make a safe place for them to be.

The young are weaned between 70 and 125 days, when they detach from the teat and leave the pouch. The opossum lifespan is unusually short for a mammal of its size, usually only two to four years. Senescence  is rapid.

So were they leaving the pouch for the first time maybe?
