Title: Banding Day & First Flight
Post by: RFalcon on 04-Jun-10, 07:26:10 PM
Thank you so much for creating Rfalconcam.com It is by far one of my most favorite websites!

I have two questions.

When are they going to band Beauty and Archer's babies and when will the babies take their first flight?

Thank you,
Ian

Welcome aboard Ian

Fledging (first true flight) happens in the vicinity of roughly 6 weeks of age, though it can happen as early as 35 days.  The males usually fly earlier than the females-and we don't know which these guys are yet, though I personally think one male & one female

Wouldnt it be wonderful if it was a boy and a girl like Kaver and Mariahs first clutch with Archers Grandad Freedom and his sister Isis in 2002

I know it gets so confusing.  It's like a Peregrine's Peyton Place.

M&K are Archer's grandparents and Freedom is his dad. Isis would be his Aunt.

When the Watchers get bored, they start talking about all the ties and relationships to the Rochester Falcons.  It becomes quite amusing.

Title: Isis with Wind Over Wings?
Post by: ginkgi on 08-Jun-10, 05:13:32 PM
I saw a picture of a ' Wind Over Wings' demonstration at the Lebanon, CT library in the paper on June 4. The trainer was holding a peregrine named Isis. Could this be our Isis of 2002?

I'm afraid not. It would have been big news if anyone had identified her.

I found this:

http://www.windoverwings.com/peregrine.htm

ISIS
Isis turned three years old in 2003. She is a magnificent Peregrine Falcon, presumably from the Hartford, CT area. She was found in one of the parks in Hartford, after her right wing was fractured. She had been hit by a car and was immediately taken to a veterinarian for surgery. Unfortunately, the bones in her wing did not heal well enough for the demanding flight of the Peregrine Falcon, as Peregrines must fly perfectly since they catch their food in flight. Isis is an unusual bird because of her ability to adjust to new situations. If a bird is unable to be released back to its natural habitat, we begin training at Wind Over Wings by reading to the bird. As volunteers read to Isis, she became curious and interested. She quickly learned to step up on a glove in preparation for life as an educator. What a privilege it is to have this faculty member with our educational service. Isis is curious, very intelligent and loves to eat!
