Oh, drats.  Just missed them.    :frustrated:

It seems that no matter when I look, no one is in the nest box!  :(  I think Archer & Beauty wait until I've gone to work or am having supper and then arrive.  So thank you all for capturing and sharing all the photos of A & B when they are on camera!  :thumbsup:

The local newspaper had a detailed article about the renovations going on at Kodak Tower.  Many of you will recognize the ballpark that used to be visible from the nest box.

I recall M&K would usually start molting just about the time the juvies got their wings firmly under them...so mid-late July.  The pics Lou took of Beauty July 25th looked like she was molting, so I'd say he's right on schedule.

Have been trying to catch them while @ work. I work on high enough floor to see scrape clearly. (Well, better w/binocs, got to bring in.) Hope they decide to come back and claim Times Square scrape for next year. Maybe there'll be young ones too. I'll keep watchin', gotta catch them one of these days. Nice not to have all the 'other' birds around all the time too. Can always tell when the falcons are flying cause the birds go to ground in the immediate areas of their flight.

Here's some of the terra cotta tiles (http://www.flickr.com/photos/garavin/sets/72157622013007560/) they discussed in the article.  I walked by a bunch of them when I was moving between buildings and grabbed a quick shot of them with my cellphone camera.

Archer says: "That's my feather!" I have a hard time telling which side the feather is from.  Is this off the right wing?  I know it is not a primary, what do you call this feather?  Secondary?

Saw either Archer or Beauty, not sure which, flyng Eastward from Times Square about 10:30 a.m. today. All the other birds shortly thereafter started flying again. It was like, whew, about time they left! The 'other' birds were hiding on bldg. ledges, down on the river stones, in the 'duct, etc. What a beautiful site, to see one of these wonderful creatures in flight!

Here's one thing I see as a problem with this forum. This is the 86th post on a thread that started back in June and still continues to run with a subject line that is irrelevant to current posts. I'm guessing that it is because many of us are hesitant to start new threads, but it certainly does make things a bit confusing.

I suspect that I am not alone in being unsure what the difference is between the first four major threads of the Rochester falcons section. (or are the called something other than threads at the higher level?)

I'm wishing that I could feel enthusiastic about it, but, try as I will, I'm still having difficulty. Of course, it does not help the forum, and acceptance of it, that there is relatively little to report right now, and that is nobody's fault. Perhaps all will start anew and with more excitement and joy, when the next season comes around.

The way I see it, Diana, is this is still a work in progress.  I come to this particular thread to post pictures I've captured of Beauty & Archer and I see it as being relevant as long as they're there.  All the smiley posts are in one place...panda posts...etc. unlike the "old" board (which I have not abandoned) which was one giant thread thousands of posts long.  I've skipped the snakes thread because I'm just not interested, but all my Sheraton Toronto captures are in Rhea Mae's thread for those who choose to follow them.

It may make sense toward spring to tweak how this board is set up and what the main topics and threads are called once we see how everyone uses it.  The Norfolk and IWS eagle boards open a new thread every day to report cam captures and discussion...maybe that will work here.  Norfolk also has a thread just for live photos and another by one extremely dedicated watcher who posts a daily summary from all sources.  One thing I do see is that the mods & admins are being flexible about moving and adding things as ideas come up (thank you all!)...we have all winter to figure out the best way for this forum to work going forward.

This thread works very well for me.  I always know when I get the message that I will get some info about Archer and Beauty in the Times Square Nest Box.  I'm a happy camper.

I think this particular thread has stayed very much on topic. Most of its replies include pictures of Archer and Beauty captured by the Main Camera at the Times Square nest box. If that's not on topic, what is? And the topic really didn't start until August 1st when the forum opened. The initial post was there to demonstrate how the forum was laid out.

I have no problem with this thread. Sometimes, I try to change the subject to Archer at nest on 8-26-09 or a time.

Annieinelkhart attached the pictures to her post instead of sharing the links from the archive viewer. Alison did not log in as a member of the forum. She viewed it as a guest. Guests cannot see attached files. That's why she couldn't see the pictures.

I have modified annieinelkhart's post to include the links. This should fix the problem.

Just so everyone knows, we tweet falconwatches so you all can see what is happening instantly.  You can see what is happening in the nestbox, and we report what is happening outside.  In this case, they were actually Carol P's tweets (known as WanderingFalcon on Twitter).  If Carol P is downtown, she'll call one of us to tweet the watch for her right away.  If I am downtown and I see A&B on Changing Scenes, then you know why you don't see any activity in the nestbox...but they can come and go at any time..and that's when the online watchers can post what's happening.

I'm pretty sure I saw Mariah today on a street light on 104 W about 3 sections up from the Veterans Bridge.  I'm just not used to seeing her "in traffic" like that.

I couldn't get into a good spot to get a tag number because of traffic, but if it was her, she was big and beautiful!

It makes sense too, with the proximity of the bridge at Maplewood Park.  And she'd be far enough away from A/B and yet still within her "area".

There were no falcons on the main cam since October 11.  That was the last time I saw both in person, but Larry had Beauty on the Communication Tower at lunch on 10/12.

The Main Camera is working again, but it looks like there is a problem with one of the motors. This is not unexpected for something that has been exposed to Rochester weather for 8 years.

Rfalconcam will be replacing the entire camera system with something that is faster, more reliable, and able to capture video.

As I mentioned earlier, the cost of the system is about $2,000 more than the Rfalconcam budget allows. Some of you have have made donations to help pay for the camera system. Thank you very much. Every bit helps.

DITTO on Kudos to Donna.    I'm so happy you found her home.  As Carol mentioned she has been visible this weekend.  I saw Beauty just before dark on Saturday on Old Changing Scenes (see Twitter), and last evening Brian and I found her on Widows Walk railing.  As you can see, she looked beautiful in the setting sun.

Possibly a wing?  If Beauty is eating on the building above the nest box, parts are probably falling into the well, which is quite deep.  That's why we had a ramp built in case the little ones fell down there.

She's nearby.  Last week she must have had lunch at the old City Hall right next to the nest box.  The back entranceway was COVERED in feathers and...well the leftover remnants of a dinner devine.  Didn't have the heart to tell my coworkers the truth when they started talking about cats!   :2funny:

It sure looks like you caught Beauty at the nest box this morning Donna.  I was downtown after that and Beauty was up on the Times Square Bldg. at the base of the NE wing.  Dana and I actually saw the camera, which was pointed straight up, bring itself back to the lower ledge, just above the nest box. 

The automatic pointing system is not working properly and no one is available to fix it during the holiday break.

Now if we can just convince Beauty to perch on that ledge.

I just don't think she will be that cooperative.  :2funny:

Yes, it has been snowing today.

It's snowing out there right now.  We're expecting some really nasty weather over the next few days.  Snow, low temps and winds around 30 mph.

We had about 4 inches yesterday and tomorrow more and 40 to 50 mph winds...Love snow...hate wind.

She's a Winter gal like Mariah. The whole weekend is suppose to be bad as far as winds and snow. Oh well...welcome 2010.  :sick:

19 here in Maryland and the winds are howling at 45 to 50 mph throught 6 PM Sunday night!  Snow showers are in the mix for Monday morning (I go back to work for the first time in 2 weeks - THAT should take care of my good mindset before I even walk into the door)!
