Title: Jemison Has Broken Shoulder, Says Vet Post by: Yarak on 07-Jul-10, 10:50:24 AM Quote The Veterinarian who is taking care of Jemison performed an x-ray today and the results are in. Jemison has a break in her right coracoid bone, part of her shoulder. Her long-term prognosis is uncertain right now, but there's good reason to be optimistic. In young birds like Jemison bones heal fast,... Prayers for fast healing to A & B's little boy. What a rough 1st year for them. Callidora is doing great. Hope he joins her soon. Daddy has his little girl, let's hope mommy gets her little boy, (if he actually is a boy) back. Thank you for the update.
Title: Re: Jemison Has Broken Shoulder, Says Vet Post by: valhalla on 07-Jul-10, 11:04:19 AM I keep finding the glass half full and I'm going to believe that is true. Jemison will get a beefed up diet of calcium, is very young and will heal quickly. If he can be released soon, then the watchers will get an added treat, as he might stick around a bit longer to learn his necessary skill sets. A little set-back, but ultimately it is all good. Half-full, half-full ....
Title: Re: Jemison Has Broken Shoulder, Says Vet Post by: Kris G. on 07-Jul-10, 11:09:16 AM Will there be surgical intervention or is it too late seeing as this is the 5th day since the injury? This news is heartbreaking in that he won't be returning to the skies anytime soon but hopefully Jemison will be able to fly again.
Title: Re: Jemison Has Broken Shoulder, Says Vet Post by: theboot8mom on 07-Jul-10, 11:18:46 AM Seeing that he is young, how long do they think it will take to heal? What would have happened if they were in the wild, with no watchers to step in and help? It seems like it is going to be tuff for him to get back in the swing of things, being taught to hunt by his parents. Will it be that easy for all of them to get back to normal when he is released? I am just so concerned for our little Jemison. She/he was doing so well flying and then this...how sad for him poor little one. ???

Title: Re: Jemison Has Broken Shoulder, Says Vet Post by: Carol P. on 07-Jul-10, 11:38:21 AM After watching him for hours on the northside of the Time Square Bldg, and seeing how far his right wing had been drooping, I was pleasantly surprised to see that he is holding his wing up tighter to his body. It's not back 100%, but it is much improved.

Title: Re: Jemison Has Broken Shoulder, Says Vet Post by: jeanne on 07-Jul-10, 12:04:13 PM Sweet boy. He looks great though and feisty is good. He's still young so maybe his bones are still growing so that he will heal fast. Fingers crossed for our sweet baby bird.

Title: Re: Jemison Has Broken Shoulder, Says Vet Post by: Bonnie on 07-Jul-10, 12:10:42 PM I posted this in Imprints comments, but I'll post here, too. Sorry for the duplicate.
Our Jersey Girl had a fractured clavicle that healed on its own within a week and half. In fact, it had started healing by the time the Xray was taken five days after she apparently fractured it. She had two and a half weeks of quiet and lots and lots of food. She had a week to practice flying in a flight cage while still being fed a great diet. She flew out fast, strong and up and the family welcomed her back immediately. We thought we could recognize her by her unsteady landings for a couple of days, but after that, there was no way to tell her apart from her sisters. Not sure how bad the break is, but being young is definitely a good thing. Fingers crossed here. :doctor: :2cents: :2cents: Title: Re: Jemison Has Broken Shoulder, Says Vet Post by: valhalla on 07-Jul-10, 12:43:22 PM Not sure how bad the break is, but being young is definitely a good thing. Do they have to be sedated like our regular pets, do? Must be tricky. Great photo of J in Imprints blog. Thank you, Carol!
Title: Re: Jemison Has Broken Shoulder, Says Vet Post by: bess440 on 07-Jul-10, 01:35:32 PM I'm so sorry that Jemison is injured. I haven't posted hardly at all, but I've been watching every step of the way. He's a very lucky peregrine to have all of you keeping such a close eye on him. How can she not fully recover with all of our thoughts and prayers? I hope to be involved for next year's brood. I really miss it. Heal fast, little Jemison!

Title: Re: Jemison Has Broken Shoulder, Says Vet Post by: Paul Hamilton on 07-Jul-10, 03:28:12 PM I'd hoped it was only a sprain and Jemison would be back in the sky in a week or too. Alas, it was not to be.
The good news is that the survival rate of injured and rehabilitated juvenile falcons is about the same as that of uninjured ones, according to this paper: http://elibrary.unm.edu/sora/jrr/v031n04/p00347-p00352.pdf The birds often require falconry training in order to learn to hunt. However, the parents of one individual remained on terrirory until the fall, making it possible to return the youngster to their care instead. When did Archer migrate last year? Paul Title: Re: Jemison Has Broken Shoulder, Says Vet Post by: Vandrefalk on 07-Jul-10, 03:38:51 PM Doesn't Wild Wings have a flight cage? Is that where Jemison could go when he is healed? I'm hoping all things are in his favor and it was a clean break. Given the comments about his excellent flight capabilities very early, perhaps he just got a little cocky :hurt:
Sending good thoughts his way! If Jemi was such a good flyer and he is young he could heal and be released sooner then the 5 months as long as A & B are still around to teach him, right? I sure hope so, it is so sad that this had to happen to our beautiful baby. :crying:

Title: Re: Jemison Has Broken Shoulder, Says Vet Post by: Joyce on 07-Jul-10, 08:51:02 PM @Kris G. - The rehabber said that this type of fracture is common for young fledglings. The bone calcifies very quickly, and as Carol mentioned they are going to feed Jemison meat with high calcium levels. Normally, these type of fractures do not get surgical intervention (just like hairline fractures do not get casts in humans).
@Paul - We were all hoping for an injury with the quickest healing time too. We were told that having this break is better than pulled tendons which would take a long time to heal. Once healed, Jemison will have to demonstrate that he can get lift and fly from ground position. We are all hoping Jemison can be released in time to reacquaint himself with his parents and get his hunting lessons from them. You never know, maybe Callidora will remain in home territory long enough for her and Jemison to fly together in the gorge. Wouldn't that be wonderful! Think positive thoughts! Title: Re: Jemison Has Broken Shoulder, Says Vet Post by: Dumpsterkitty on 07-Jul-10, 09:10:16 PM Although no one saw the initial injury, I'd bet Jemison hit a window. So I'm VERY grateful this is the worst of it. And hopefully he's learned to stay away from windows in the future.
Do we know yet if Jemison will be staying at the Black Creek during his recovery? Or will he need to stay with a vet for a bit? And I can't say it enough times...thank you to ALL the watchers! I shudder to think where Jemison would be without you! Title: Re: Jemison Has Broken Shoulder, Says Vet Post by: falconsforever129 on 07-Jul-10, 09:38:35 PM Sending healing thoughts to our baby Jemison...It is good news actually since the watchers were able to get him/her to the rehabber and out of the street/sidewalk.
Such a sweet little one...I love the photo..it is precious..that dear little face is priceless. I sent a check to the rehabber hoping it will help pay for Jemi's food or treatments. We all love our little one and I hope to see him flying free once more.... :) :falcon: Title: Re: Jemison Has Broken Shoulder, Says Vet Post by: Tokira on 07-Jul-10, 09:41:37 PM Quote In young birds like Jemison bones heal fast,...
