June Summers, President of the Genesee Valley Audubon Society, and Rochester Falconcam member Carol Phillips paid a visit to Jemison and provided the picture above, along with a report of her progress so far.  She continues to be feisty and is eating everything given to her.  Jemison also enjoyed the cooling spray of...

sounds great, thanks; and sounds like he's healing fast. I would assume that at rehab they'll know when he is really ready to go --  and the sooner the better!

The photo of J with water droplets on his head is hilarious and very lovely. Unfortunately it also reminded of me of something ... at about 1:25 in this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3ERAV57bqaU

Anyway, thank you to all of the caring people who have worked together to help J.

The place in Syracuse did a good job of getting Mariah back in condition for flying and hunting last year.  She left the transfer box "like her tail was on fire" and arrived back in Rochester within a few days.

Another big "thank you" to everyone who had a role in both rescues!

I'm very happy to hear that Jemison is fit enough to go to a larger facility with a flight cage. I do have a question though...
When s/he is deemed fit enough to be released, will s/he be brought back to Rochester,  or released nearer to Montezuma?
Just wondering.

I think it will depend on when Jemison is ready to be released and whether Beauty & Archer (and Callidora if it's soon enough) are still around.

..want to add my deep gratitude to all who helped in Jemison's rescue..we need to make them all honorary members of our group and acknowledge them in some small way!
Now might there be some bulletin which could be issued to downtown businesses, asking them to instruct workers to contact one of the watchers instead of using a broom, etc. to fend off a fiercesome fledgling?

I asked June yesterday if she had heard anything about Jemison's condition.  She has received a short email from the rehabber saying that he was doing very well, but no details.  We'll be sure to let everyone know when we hear more.

I'm just wondering how Jemison is going to learn how to hunt without anyone being around to teach her once all the others head elsewhere for the winter.

Am so sorry to read this morning that Jemison will not be returning to Rochester when she is finally released from rehab - they're afraid Archer and Beauty won't recognize her and consider her an intruder - but I'm wondering without her parents to teach her things, how will she do in a strange area?  How will she know what's safe and what isn't?  Am glad she is recovering well tho.

This is the reply I posted on the other thread (http://rfalconcam.com/forum/index.php?topic=3101.msg24295#new)

I read the update on J.  Will she be able to learn how to fend for herself without the help of her parents?  How sad to know such a wonderful start came to such a unfavorable ending.  I hope she can be free some day.  She sure did get the hang of flying early and she was sooooo very good at it.
It breaks my heart.

Sue-most of what Jemison needs to know to survive is actually instinct.  When Jemison was first injured, Paul Hamilton posted a research article (http://elibrary.unm.edu/sora/jrr/v031n04/p00347-p00352.pdf) showing that injured/rehabbed/released juvies do just as well as their non-injured cohorts in the long term.  I have faith Jemison will do just fine!

And just to add to that-another point that Alison posted on the Imprints comments-when peregrine falcons were being reintroduced after they were almost extinct, the birds were hatched in captivity by falconers then released from hack boxes.  None of those pioneer birds had parents to teach them anything, yet they survived and thrived and are the ancestors of the peregrines we worry so much about today.  Jemison will be fine!
