Could not get the sound to work, Ei, but I read the piece. Yes, a Driveway Moment. Another piece from that sad time - one I had never heard of but which the younger ones knew - was a story that was read in full on NPR last Memorial Day - called "The Things they Carried'. I never moved for an hour. I found this story (http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=125128156) by that name...looks like a book I might like to read... Perhaps what was broadcast on NPR was a long extract... As it took an hour, I assumed it to be a short story. Whatever it is, one can feel the awful heat, the terrible loneliness. It's rough and raw and at times even funny. It will leave a lasting effect. The freshmen are detailed to read the book before they come to college, and there are various class activities and assignments built around it. The idea is to build civic awareness and engagement, and to foster discussion of topics raised in the book. It's part of the "American Democracy Project," and has been very successful in raising the consciousness of our new students. It's really a great program.

I saw that it's required reading at many schools, yet I'd never heard of it before today. I have many, many memories from that time...I'm definitely adding it to my next book shopping trip. |
