And I thought my morning was busy! ;) Great catches, MAK - love the different view of things with all the water. It does go down and the new dirt brings new nutrients for the soil. My morning pictures might get posted later. Maybe ;) Did a complete walk-around of the property and all things considered, we are in very good shape (there was a much water rushing around the north side of the house where there was no construction as there was on the south (pool) side). Did some cleanup, raking, and more planting. Need to get some dirt. Basement is completely dry and there were ponds and rivers outside that door.

More pics from MAK this am. Taken from Broad St. bridge Genesee river rages north towards Main St. bridge. This is looking south up river towards Court St. bridge. All rocks under water leaving nowhere for shore birds to fish and hang out This area usually filled with gulls, ducks and herons. The High falls (WOW) The gorge Another angle of high falls. Water in this part of gorge usually relatively calm. There's actually whitecaps down there! Looking north from pedestrian bridge. Another area that's usually calm The island on the gorge side of pedestrian bridge It looked more flooded than yesterday morning.

Looking at Main st. bridge From high falls pedestrian bridge. Notice how much more flooded island is since a few days ago This pic really shows how under water the island in the gorge has gotten! Pretty darn good, actually! Remember when Joyce first started watching and she was using binoculars with a camera built in? Ei - I miss those camera-binocs now and then. I've even thought about getting another pair. They are still pretty reasonably priced. It was fun to take them places. They had good optics, and I really liked taking video through them while I was watching at the same time. Mak - Pretty ingenious. You do with what you have and all of us enjoy seeing them. Since I am out of state, your tweets are fun to get every morning too! I don't know how you did it, but try to brace everything as much as you can, and hold your breath when you take the pic. Joyce

I have a couple more tips, if you haven't already figured them out, which may not apply depending on what kind of camera you have. If you have a camera with a flash, and you can turn the flash off, you should. Otherwise the camera sets the exposure based on the assumption that the flash will fire, but the flash won't be effective through the scope and the photo will be underexposed (dark). At least that's been my experience. Secondly, and this only works if you have a self-timer on your camera and an adapter that secures the camera to the scope. If you do, you can set the timer to take the picture, and take your hands off the camera entirely. Since any motion will be multiplied by the scope's high magnification, even the act of depressing the shutter button yourself can cause things to be not as sharp as they will be if you can use a timer or remote shutter control. Sometimes if it's really windy, and the wind is buffeting the scope, I attach my camera to the scope, set the timer, press the shutter, and then try to lean down on the tripod legs with my hands to try and steady it in the wind while waiting for the camera to take the photo. I sometimes like the "circle" effect as well, but most digiscope experts recommend zooming your camera until the circle disappears. I'm not an expert, by any means, but I've been practicing and am gradually learning what works and what doesn't. With my scope and my camera, I almost need perfect atmospheric conditions to get a good digiscope photo, meaning bright sunlight, a fairly dry day (no humidity in the air, which is a challenge in Kentucky), and a day that's not so hot that I get heat waves (also a challenge in summer in Kentucky). I just got back from a trip to New Mexico where those conditions were exactly right, and managed to get some nice closeups of Sandhill Cranes, which I'll eventually post once I get them all organized.

Lola the take off shot is my very first one. When I looked and saw that I had it I was ecstatic! People driving by must have thought I was nuts standing in the middle of the parking lot yelling and raising my arms in the air all by my lonesome.
Bird Crazy she acts like she belongs there too! She is the queen of Mercury!! ;D
MAK...I love that picture of Beauty taking off from Mercury...it is great.. :2thumbsup: And she looks like she is part of that statue indeed....She really does belong there!!! She is the Queen of Mercury and Rochester  Let's make Beauty the Princess of Rochester, there is only 1 Queen and that is Mariah! (http://i165.photobucket.com/albums/u62/hmanies/Smileys/zerberus.gif) :2thumbsup: Yes she can be a Princess with her mating with "Prince" Archer, Her Royal Highness the Queen is Mariah she may have to be in exile but she is still Queen Yes I agree too! Princess Beauty it is and although I wasn't around here during the days of Mariah most definitely she should hold the crown of the Queen!!! :winner: ----->>> IS MARIAH

Yikes! I didn't mean to start anything. Ok people in defense of myself I said Beauty is the queen of MERCURY! Set me straight ...did Mariah hang out on Mercury like Beauty does? Please don't send out the lynch mob, I didn't mean to offend Mariah or her fans(of which I am one)! I would never try to take away Mariahs crown!!! :gum:

no harm no foul. I have no problem with Beauty being Queen of Mercury, I just drew a line at Queen of Rochester she can be a Princess though. To my knowledge Mariah never sat on Mercury. At least no one ever said they saw her there.

as I said no harm no foul. I know Mariah isn't coming back to Rochester (I just wish we knew where she is at I hope she found a new territory). Beauty is now our Lady of Mercury. Ruler of the Rochester skies. Long as she gives us babies to watch I'm OK with that. Which is part of the reason I would like a nest box put over on the KP site so the lady over there doesn't get designs on downtown. I don't think I want to go through any more fights. even second hand watching from the internet.

I hear ya BC. I too hope there are no more territorial battles. Although it is a Pefa's nature to do this and I have no doubt it will happen again. I just hope that there are Watchers that witness it and help if they can. Every day I wonder where Mariah is. Hoping she is doing well wherever she is. and I still don't give up hope that someday we'll see her again. I have a heart shaped pendant that I wear with her name on it. Just so I never forget.  I am so happy that Beauty and Archer have chosen Rochester as their home and that we may have a 2nd Pefa family next year! Watching over young fledglings is my favorite thing to do. Lady is a good "title" for Beauty and Lady Pefa. ;)

OK, so now we need to mount a tripod in the bed of your pickup and set you up with a motor drive mount on the scope with video feed to a dashboard cam with a joystick to point the scope. Then add a mobile Internet connection for video streaming.
It will be like that African Safari site on wildearth.tv except in it will be in Rochester.

Ok, I'm going to remind people that we have a FalconWatch blog that was set up just for this purpose. Items posted there are automatically distributed to the forum, facebook, twitter, yahoo, email, etc. (Several media outlets follow us on twitter, and our facebook fan list is growing daily.)
When pictures from watches are posted directly to the forum, the redistribution process is circumvented, and then someone has to manually post the pictures to facebook, etc., which introduces its own set of problems that ultimately results in some people not seeing falcon watch pictures.
Rfalconcam's mission statement starts with the words:
"To increase environmental awareness and education by providing high quality still images..."
Let's do our best to fulfill our mission by not taking shortcuts. If there are problems with the FalconWatch blog that need to be addressed, let's discuss them so we can get them fixed.

Shaky,
The forum topic with MAK's pics was originally posted as a single subject with a specific date. I revised the title so she could continue to share her morning watch pics under one topic. MAK admits she is a little techno-challenged, and has a hard time with inserting links, images, etc. Donna has been helping post her pictures. Rather than having many separate topics for each watch, I thought it would be easier to view and follow MAK's daily pics under one topic. Carol and Dana just followed suit.
Personally, I would rather see a thread under Rochester Falcons that says Falcon Watcher Photos where everyone can go to see them under one heading. I understand the mission and purpose of the FalconWatch blog, but to be honest, it is much easier and faster to post to the forum than using the Dashboard program in FalconWatch. Plus there is also a comfort zone in posting to the forum. Sometimes it is intimidating to meet the expectation of "providing high quality still images." I only wish I could be good as Chad & Chris who post pictures of Seneca & Cheyenne on the Cleveland forum.

I know how it started. I was fine with a small topic, but when it expanded and started to become unwieldy, that's when I stepped in. Regarding the mission statement. It's not the "high quality still images." It's the "To increase environmental awareness and education" part that needs to be stressed. We do that by spreading the word as far as possible. Taking shortcuts like posting to the forum is not going to accomplish that, at least not without a lot of extra effort on the part of volunteers who don't necessarily have the time or skills to do it. Posting pictures to the forum is fine as long as it doesn't become the primary repository for the images. The forum is not a photo gallery. It's not designed to be one. Using it as such is asking for trouble, and we are guaranteed to run out of storage on our server if a skilled volunteer doesn't step in to remove the files. Using the forum to store pictures is like using a screwdriver to pound nails. That's what hammers are for. Similarly, online photo albums are for storing photos. There are many to choose from including Facebook, KGallery, Picasa, and flickr. The FalconWatch blog is not difficult to use, and it gives the author many more tools for putting together a story than the forum can. It also indexes the posts by date and category for easy retrieval later. Plus it's cleaner because the comments and off-topic discussion are kept separate from the actual posts -- a big advantage for anyone wanting to review events or just catch up after an absence. And finally, it provides a mechanism for broadly disseminating information and accomplishing our goal of increasing awareness and education. (The dissemination also creates additional copies of the information contained in the posts, essentially giving us free backups, and we all know the importance of backing up our data!) If there are real problems with the FalconWatch blog, let's create a topic to discuss them. Then we can work on improving it. Also, if there are online watchers who would like to ghost write for watchers on the street, they can use the topic to volunteer their services. Anyone with WordPress experience and extra time on their hands should have no problem using the FalconWatch blog. I would love to see someone condense each day's tweets into a single watch report. Imagine what could be done with a season's worth of clearly written, easily accessible watch reports. A comprehensive end-of-year report could be written. Throw in the Imprints posts, the charts for egg brooding and feedings, the falcon family tree, and a few other tidbits, and you've got a really nice article worthy of publication. This is citizen science.

No one is saying MAK's morning reports aren't greatly appreciated. I thank her all the time, since I'm unable to get out much, except for the weekends during the Winter months.
I think Shaky has a great idea about summarizing the tweets onto a daily Falcon Watch report. Does anyone want to volunteer to do this?
We are, in fact, citizen scientists. Every one of us. I've always said that the Rochester Watchers know more about Peregrine behavior in a city than the "experts".
If we all get in the habit of leaving Watch Reports in the appropriate area, outside the Forum, it will become easier each time we do them. I know I'm also guilty about not posting my reports there as often as I should. Remember, these posts will flow to all the RFalconcam community, including the forum.
The RFalconcam site has great potential to be the best Peregrine depository of information anywhere. Let's make this the come-to website for "experts" and "non-experts" to learn all about city Peregrine Falcons. We have a vast amount of knowledge to share with everyone.
