Title: The ABC's of birds - Letter A
Post by: Patti from Kentucky on 01-Nov-10, 02:29:42 AM
Wow, I have so many photos that begin with the letter A...I'm having trouble restraining myself from posting way too many...but I'll start with only two. I went on a "Wings" birding tour of Southeast Arizona in May of 2008, and saw many new birds, including these American Avocets:

And from the same tour of Southeast Arizona...the Acorn Woodpecker. These guys were everywhere, and they're strikingly beautiful!

A is for Auk and Auklet! I love the name! They are not at all "aukward" but a small elegant birds that live primarily in Arctic regions. The Auk family includes puffins, murres and guilllemots as well. My photographs of auks are nothing more than minute specks! Here is a crested auklet from Wikipedia.

Anhinga
The anhinga is also called darter or snakebird. It sits low in the water with only its long sinuous neck visible, hence the snake reference. It is a diving bird, but unlike other water birds, it cannot produce oil to protect its feathers so it must frequently dry its wings to prevent its becoming water logged. It is related to the cormorant and is frequently confused with the double crested cormorant. I made this photograph in the Tortorguero region of Costa Rica.

fixed the BBC link, aafke, sorry!
gayle, that auklet looks like he needs to cut back on the espressos.
I'd think an auklet would prefer chocolate.

Albatross They have incredibly long, narrow wings. They are the largest of seabirds and feed on squid, fish and refuse. They nest in large colonies on remote oceanic islands and they rarely come close enough to be seen from the shore.

OK...I couldn't stand it! I remembered some pictures we took of the Waved Albatross in the Galapagos Islands (the Island of Espanola). In the Galapagos, where there were no land predators, the birds are very tame; in some cases we had to step around birds nesting on the trails. The Waved Albatrosses were nesting while we were there...so we saw birds on nests; birds doing a courtships dance, and birds with small chicks. Occasionally we'd get to see one walk from its nest to the cliff where it could launch itself back over the ocean to feed, and they're very ungainly on land! Photos are: 1) Albatross courtship dance 2) Close up of Waved Albatross (on nest) 3) Waved Albatross with fluffy chick between his/her giant feet!

A is for American White Pelican
The first photo we took at Yellowstone National Park, which is one of the places the pelicans nest.
The second photo was a November in Florida; a migratory or wintering flock. They were so striking as they flew overhead in large groups.

A is for American Black Duck
I just found this lurking in an obscure folder on my computer! Most raster bird ranges extend to the Rockies, But in one of my books, it shows the black duck's range ending at the Mississippi River. Not to worry, I made this photograph on the east side of the river in the backwaters. The black duck produces hybrids with the mallard.
