ABERDEEN, S.D. (AP) - Four rare whooping cranes have been sighted in northern South Dakota.

The Aberdeen American News reports that birders and others have been watching two adults and two young whoopers that have been feeding in harvested corn and bean fields north of Aberdeen since late October.

Federal wildlife officials are monitoring the site to ensure the birds are not harassed.

The birds are considered 1 of North America's most endangered. They currently are on their fall migration.

U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service specialist Jay Peterson says whooping cranes have not been spotted in the Aberdeen area for four years.
