Title: Scenes from my backyard
Post by: Dumpsterkitty on 21-Nov-10, 02:26:30 PM
Taken today hanging out my bedroom window The first 2 are fairly classic... These 2 I'm adding at full ginormous size...the composition is awful, but I managed to catch some fascinating details best seen at full size. In the second one, the interesting bit is top right. Ei

And a few more from this weekend... I caught this tufted titmouse in the act...he looks none too happy with me ;) I looked out the window and saw this deer napping in the back... I thought I saw some movement on the other side of the tree...but I didn't see anything at first other than the bird... ...until he turned his head around to look at me... Talk about camouflage! Ei

The deer were back today. They stayed long enough to get enough pictures for a small album (http://www.kodakgallery.com/gallery/sharing/shareRedirectSwitchBoard.jsp?token=970812838506%3A1004472741&sourceId=533754321803&cm_mmc=eMail-_-Share-_-Photos-_-Sharee). No need to sign in.

I am quite blessed to share my yard with so many beautiful animals. They seem to know it's safe. I actually live on a main highway, but the way the house is situated it blocks the backyard from the road. Even in the front/side yard they rarely go past the halfway point to the main road. They will cross the small road directly in front, but they know to watch for cars. Browsing pictures today I found this one of a young buck-you can just barely make out the knobs on his head. He looks a bit scraggly, but he was actually fine-it was spring and he was shedding. I saw him later in the summer & he had fattened up nicely. Anyway, when I have stale bread I'll throw it in to the yard for the squirrels. He found a slice and I caught him with it. He's not quite sure what to do with it, but he wouldn't drop it. Ei

Yesterday I just managed to catch a glimpse of the family of deer that travel together-I saw several moving up the hill and counted 6 more. After they had mostly moved on I spotted this young buck pulling up the rear. Too young to be with the bachelor herd, too old to stay close to the does. It was nice to see one of "my" fawns make it this far. Ei

While I was looking out the back window today I caught a few visitors... Mr. Squirrel chillin' Some of the Juncos are particularly dark this year Movement on the hill caught my eye... The whole herd had come racing down the hill. I think I count 11. There were 3 more off to the right and 2 more still coming down the hill. This one stopped to say Hi! on her way through. Ei

Nice pics! We have deer that come in our backyard too but we don't see them so much in winter- just their tracks. In summer, we see them in the field next to our house-they get into our garden and have ruined a few trees. :(

And today's interesting chapter...I decided to buy some whole peanuts for the squirrels, hoping it would slow them down a bit in trying to raid the seed feeders. I didn't get a picture of the first taker-a tufted titmouse! A little while later one of the squirrels finally took a nut... ...and promptly buried it in the snow!

Today's deer watch started at 0:dark:30-there was just enough light to make out these 2 resting in my yard... (fill light added) Then later this morning this cutie stopped by... And for the past half hour I've been watching a 3 legged deer work its way up the hill. I didn't get a good picture because I didn't want to get too close to the window and spook it. I didn't want to see it struggle to try and run. Then a branch snapped in the wind and it ran up the hill just fine. Other than missing part of a back leg, it looks perfectly healthy. Amazing.

Very cute...poor 3 legged, they learn! I saw it earlier this winter not long after it broke the leg. I figured it wouldn't make it through the winter. I'm happy to see I was wrong. And that face is precious!

I would guess that handicapped animals, as long as the disability doesn't interfere too much with the ability to forage, or doesn't set them up at risk for infection, etc., probably do relatively well in the absence of predators. So as long as you don't have coyotes, wolves, bears, or other predators hanging around, he may continue to do just fine. It seems like it's predation that separates the fit from the unfit.

I don't have many predators in my immediate vicinity, but there are some in the deeper woods these herds travel to. I guess he's been lucky so far, particularly not picking up an infection when the broken part finally fell off. He is keeping up with his herd, so I'll let you know if I see him again.

Last year I cut out some old branches from this shrub to encourage new growth below, intending to top it off this year. But look carefully-the cut off old branches were a perfect spot for a nest...won't be trimming this one any time soon! That was last week. This week I had to mow the lawn-Mom Robin was not pleased, but I did the area by the nest as fast as I could. But I had to take a peek-with my camera- I left them quickly so they won't get chilled. And one more item that won't be used during nesting season- My clothespin bag. Don't know what's nesting-didn't see any eggs-but I guess I'll find out at some point!

I can't believe how much bigger they are in less than a day! I dared 2 pics 'cause Momma was already totally ticked off at me for mowing near her babies. The unhatched egg is gone. They probably pushed it over the side. Have to look under the nest when I go back outside.

One good thing about the bizarre weather-my Peace roses managed to bloom before the Japanese beetles got them for the first time ever! And the House Finches have fledged their first clutch of the season! Too dark to get a pic of the babies, but Dad was showing them how to land and eat from my feeders!

I am such a sap. The squirrels have figured out how to get onto one of my feeders. I usually just chase them & they stay away for a while. It started pouring rain a little while ago. I saw one on the feeder. (horrible picture-sorry) Couldn't chase her...she's got milk. She's stocking up for her babies.

I saw Momma going in & out when I was mowing the backyard. I also had a fledgling House Finch on the ledge this afternoon...Mom & Dad were trying to teach it to eat on it's own...it said FEED ME!

It's that time of year again to resurrect my backyard photo topic... The reason I can't breathe & my eyes look like 2 &^%holes in the snow after a day of yard work Don't know whose nest that is But worth it because I uncovered my bleeding heart looking none the worse for wear Mr. Bluejay posturing for Mrs. Bluejay Even caught him displaying his crest for her!

Coming home from the post office today I saw a turtle on my neighbor's front walk. Right next to his recycling bin. So I assumed it was a plastic turtle going for recycling. When I got upstairs I saw it crawling across the street! A snapping turtle I do believe! I have no idea how it got to my neighbor's walk, but i'm sure it was heading for the pond at the end of the street.
