Yellow-billed Hornbill
The Southern Yellow-billed Hornbill is common in Djuma, South Africa where WildEarth conducts its live safaris. These are screen captures from safari.tv. Hornbills have a unique breeding strategy. Prior to laying her eggs, the female creates a nest in a cavity of a tree. She builds a wall using mud, droppings and fruit pulp until there is only a small aperture remaining. She lays and broods the eggs. The male feeds her, and later the chicks, through that small hole. When the chicks are ready to fledge. The wall is torn down. By sealing off predators, there is a high hatching success rate.
There are 54 species of hornbills in Africa and Asia. More information is at: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hornbill and at: http://www.earthlife.net/birds/bucerotiformes.html

Those photos are incredibly dramatic angles! I figure one can get used to anything, but that beak is a lot of plastic to carry around attached to one's head...

Y is for Yellowlegs, the Lesser one
There are a lot of birds starting with yellow! I choose the Lesser Yellowlegs, because I have seen one. It was a lost bird from I suppose the US. It was very sensational for me and lots of other people to see him. The Lesser Yellowlegs is a shorebird. Here are 2 pictures from the internet.

Y is for Yellow Warbler -- I love the males in breeding finery, like this guy I photographed along the shores of Lake Erie.

Y is for Yellow-crowned Night Heron, of which I have too many photos. Here are three samples: 1) Taken in the Caribbean in the Turks and Caicos islands. 2) Taken in the Galapagos 3) Most undignified...looks like he's just hangin' in the hot tub. This one I also took in the Galapagos.
