Both eggs were spotted Thursday morning as Savannah briefly left the nest to eat.  The eggs are expected to hatch next week.

It's confirmed: we have an eaglet! Congratulations to Savannah and Derek! It hatched this morning, there is still one egg left, and we won't know the sex of it until we do a DNA test. (The baby is the little bit of gray under Savannah's beak in this screen shot.) Thanks to everyone who follows the Eagle Cam! Be sure to keep watching as the eaglet grows.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – An eaglet at the Carolina Raptor Center continues to grow and flap its wings while staff continues to research how its sibling died last week.

Staff entered the nest on Thursday and retrieved the dead eaglet.

Medical staff examined the eaglet and found nothing abnormal.

"She was a female, and had plenty of abdominal fat, meaning Derek and Savannah were feeding her well. Her lungs, liver, and air sacs were all normal," said Michelle Miller Houck, with the Carolina Raptor Center.  "She had been much smaller than her sibling all along."

Medical staff also examined the surviving eaglet, which is three weeks old.  The eaglet weighs four pounds and 14.62 ounces.

The eaglet was immediately returned to its nest after handling.  Savannah and Derek continued to feed the eaglet several times throughout the afternoon.

In two weeks, the eaglet will be taken to a 30-feet tall hack tower, which looks similar to a tree fort, where it will learn to live on its own and get acclimated to the wild.

A full medical examination will take place prior to the move to the hack tower.  At that time staff will do a DNA sample to determine the sex.

The eaglet will be released around 12 weeks old.

HUNTERSVILLE, N.C. -- An eaglet at the Carolina Raptor Center is now about four weeks old and staff is preparing to transfer the bird to its new home.

The eaglet now weighs more than five pounds and is ready to start learning how to survive on its own.

In the next week or two, the eaglet will be taken to a 30-feet tall hack tower, which looks similar to a tree fort, where it will learn to live on its own and get acclimated to the wild.

A full medical examination will take place prior to the move to the hack tower.  At that time staff will do a DNA sample to determine the sex.

At 10-12 weeks of age, the eagle will be ready for the doors of the hack tower to open so it can test its ability to fly. Staff members will continue to feed the eagle while it's in the hack tower.

CRC staff do not plan to fit the eaglet with a tracking device.

CRC's newest bald eagle was born the weekend of March 4.  Its sibling died March 31.  Medical staff examined the eaglet and found nothing abnormal.

The eyes of the world have been watching Derek and Savannah through the 35 day incubation period and during the past four weeks as the remaining eaglet has been growing from a small gray fluff ball to an almost full sized bird. The WCNC EagleCam has given eagle enthusiasts, school children and researchers a unique insight into a bald eagle nest.

WCNC has installed a solar powered camera in the hack tower to give eagle cam watchers a few more weeks of footage before it flies away.
 

Kinsey, along with 2 other Eaglets-siblings who were blown out of their nest, have all been moved to the hack tower today.  A live webcam has been placed in the hack tower.

I know it is said that they don't have emotions like humans but I can't help but think that it must take away from there spirit and drive in some way. I feel bad for them.  :(

And I think of it as they know they had a successful nest...baby grew up and left just like it should.  Maybe a bit quicker than others, but this is the timing they know.  Any parent is a bit out of sorts when the kids leave-don't know quite what to do with themselves with a changed routine.

Two of the Eaglets have left the hack box.  The one left could be Kinsey, who was younger than the other two.

Poor baby. Hope they all make it to adulthood.

CRC Eagle Nesting 2012

At 4:07 pm, Savannah Eagle laid the first egg of the 2012 nesting season. “She had been kind of stooping over the nest bowl for a while when we saw it for the first time,” said Kelsey Hoke, Visitor Experience Manager. “I’m so excited! This is my first eagle season.” Bald eagle eggs are a dull white color and don’t have any other distinctive markings. The shape is “rounded ovate” similar to a domestic goose egg. There is no shine to the surface of the egg.   :clap:

I am sad to report that the eaglet was killed by a predator overnight. More information to come.

HUNTERSVILLE, N.C. --  Early Thursday morning, staff members of Carolina Raptor Center entered the eagle aviary and found the remains of the eaglet hatched on February 9.
It appears that the almost four-week-old chick was attacked overnight by an unknown predator.

Enhanced predator protection is in place at the eagle aviary, and there were no obvious breaches in the enclosure, providing little evidence as to the identity of the predator. There are numerous carnivorous predators that are naturally found in Latta Plantation Nature Preserve.

“We are particularly saddened by the death of the eaglet in this way, because we put forth tremendous effort to protect our birds,” said Executive Director Jim Warren. “The predator protection includes chain link fencing that is dug into the ground to prevent predators from digging under barricades.”

Savannah and Derek have produced chicks since 2006, and this is the first predator attack in the eagle aviary since the aviary was opened. There is no evidence that any of the resident bald eagles were involved or injured in the incident.

It is common practice at Carolina Raptor Center to investigate all predator attacks and aviary breaches. The center has informed the appropriate officials at US Fish and Wildlife. Center leadership will provide additional information to the Carolina Raptor Center community of staff, volunteers and friends as it becomes available.

Carolina Raptor Center extends sympathies to the thousands of EagleCam watchers and supporters who mourn the death of the eaglet.

Saw on FB that one of Derek and Savannah's eggs appears to have gotten broken...was reported by a cam watcher.  :(  With just one egg left, I sure hope this one hatches for them.  After what happened in 2013, they deserve a better year.

2014 Eagle Egg Likely Infertile
Thanks to all of our Eagle Watchers this season for your rapt attention to this page and the EagleCam. Today, in lieu of Ask the Eagle Expert, we are letting you know that it is unlikely that the eagle egg will hatch this year. Although we have not removed the egg as to not stress the birds, it appears that the egg was not fertile in the first place. This could have happened for many different reasons, but most likely the disruption from the aviary construction early in the season was a contributing factor. We hope that you will continue to watch Savannah and Derek throughout the year and that we will have eggs again next season. Please post any questions here for further information.   :(

Hello, eagle friends. Derek and I wanted to let you know that it looks like our keepers will remove the eggs tomorrow. The plan is to examine them to try and determine what might have happened this year. They also might replace the eggs with dummy ones for a week or two so that we won't want to reclutch this year. This is good, because we are kind of tired of sitting on eggs and need to get back to living life in the eagle aviary. There are also plans in the works to talk with some other folks that watch wild cams or who breed bald eagles to understand what their experience might be. We'll try to keep you posted with information that is relevant. If you have any questions, we'll do one last Ask the Eagle Expert this week on Wednesday at 10 am (tomorrow) right here with Natalie Childers, our favorite programs director.

Oh no!  None of them hatched?  Reminds me of 2011 with Beauty and Archer.

Their egg didn't hatch last year either..kind of sad for them.  Some say age could be a factor..have to see when they candle them if they weren't fertile, just like last year.

So sad! They did all that remodeling too so no predators can get in!  :(

Sadly, none of the 3 eggs hatched and the hatching window has closed.  According to the FB post, all 3 will be collected this coming Monday.  :(

How old are the eagles?

I believe I read they're in their 20's but people at the facility say they're still of the age to breed.  Savannah and Derek are both captive birds, with permanent wing injuries, and they've hatched babies in the past but not since 2013. The eggs will be checked for viability, according to the question/answer posts on FB.

My keepers want you to know that the eggs are not going to hatch this year. Here's to us for nesting TWICE this season! We are champs. The Bird Curator will pull the eggs on Monday and check them out. Then she'll give us an update about what she sees. Expect that on Tuesday or Wednesday when everyone gets in and can discuss the findings! Happy Spring.

Was the eaglet abandoned by its own parents?

Yes, I read that in the piece, DG... but it STILL seems that the chick was taken away from its parents. Even if the site was too exposed?? Anyway - I am probably missing something quite simple... like myself...

Well that explains it and it sux the eaglet has to leave 2 sets of parents and 2 sets of parents have to give up an eaglet!

Savannah laid her first egg yesterday!  Hopefully, they'll have a baby of their own this yr.  it was also said, because they started nesting early this year, they weren't able to get a camera up and running without disturbing them.   If the opportunity arises, they'll try to get something up but no guarantees.

"Yesterday we made the decision to remove the eggs from Savannah's nest. The eggs were quickly candled to be absolutely certain there was nothing growing inside and then dissected to check for any signs of viability. There were none. As far as we can tell the eggs were never fertilized. D&S still have time for a second clutch this season and we'll give them a few weeks to see if they do. We'll update you all if and when that happens. Our resident bird care staff are incredibly disappointed but not at all surprised by the lack of fertilized eggs. Hopefully we'll be able to pinpoint what's going on with these two and set them up to succeed in future years. Trust me when I say that we want bobble headed eagle babies as much as you all do. As always, thank you thank you thank you for your unending support in Savannah and our organization. We appreciate it more than you know."

I read a year ago that they were in their 20's but not really sure of their exact age.
