Title: Snow!!!!
Post by: Donna on 26-Dec-10, 11:51:17 AM
It has arrived in NJ. Now we wait and see how much! (http://i643.photobucket.com/albums/uu154/Ivory40/gif/WindowSnow.gif)

It hasn't gotten here yet, but I decided to come in to work for a few hours to get a head start in case it's slow traveling in the morning.

But, according to my backyard birds it may not be too bad.  I filled the feeders on Friday.  Usually if there's bad weather coming they're empty by nightfall.  When I left the house they had only gone through 1/3 of the seed.  We'll see.

My birds disappeared, only Mr Squirrel out there having a feast!

Even the squirrels weren't scarfing it down.  Normal leisurely snacking.  Got home at 4:30 & feeders were at the halfway point and still some seed on the ledge.  I refilled, of course, but it's just odd.

People were driving like there was a foot on the ground already, but it was blowing right out of the tire tracks down to dry, bare pavement.

I know this is a strange question, but is there a storm headed for Rochester & thereabouts too?

So, how is everyone doing?  Just very light snow in Rochester.

Accuweather is calling it "Blizzapolis".  And that may be true in NYC and along the coast, but here in Ulster county each time I check the predicted accumulation is lower than the last time.  5.8 inches is nothing to scoff at, but certainly no blizzapolis.

Probably have a little over 3 inches now but the wind is whipping and the snow is blowing. Where's that calm peaceful snow?

And only in NYC will you find 12 people, a snowblower and 2 bucket  (small) loaders to clear 3 inches of snow from one city block.

From the haggis cam...

I think we had about 10 inches but the drifts were up past my knees. The wind is still awful.

I got maybe 3-4 inches by my house.  The roads are clear but a little slick.  Took me an extra 15 minutes to get to work.  People who could walk here are calling out due to weather.  I just don't get it.

Ei! You are actually working today?? OMG! Ireland will be all tucked up til this time next week... which probably goes some way towards explaining why the IMF is taking over...

Well, we're used to this.  You're not.  And I work in health care.

3-4 inches is like a light dusting here in Rochester!

Everyone be safe out there!

It is sunny here but chilly! I know "be quiet!"  But hearing your snow reports I hope all of you are careful up there and make sure you have extra goodies and blankets in your cars.  Stay safe and warm!  :tongue2:

Snow report from the south:

8 inches Sunday morning in Taylorsville, NC - reports from Raleigh, NC weren't good, so since our path led us east, we didn't leave until 2:00 PM for our good condition 8-hour drive home.  The roads west were just about dry, but the got progressively wetter heading east.  I-40 East and I-85 North in NC had no traffic to speak of.  Durham to Richmond was not good - ICE closed I-85 south of Petersburg.  Rich was suffering because we were listening to the Giants fiasco on XM, but it did make the 1.25 hour stopage bearable.  East of DC (pretty much at Andrews Airforce Base and Rt 4) the snow came down!  Hard!  Fortunately, we were less than 20 miles from home.  Followed a truck that was smoking, stinking, and obviously lost almost all the way home (couldn't get around the fool - roads weren't good).  4x4 up the driveway (maybe 2-inches blowing hard) and we were home in a bit over 8.5 hours!  Amazing what no traffic can do!

Cold and sun is coming out from the Chesapeake today!

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

It could have been worse.  You could have been listening to the Bills fiasco!   :hurt:

I've been wondering how everyone else was faring with the storm.  We here in the Eastern Panhandle of WV have apparently really lucked out
When I looked at the satellite image the night before last, it *looked* as though we were on the western edge of the system, and all we got here was a few episodes of flurries, and that INFERNAL WIND!  Now the WIND ADVISORY continues

We almost came home via the I-81 Corridor, but knew we had to turn east in Northern VA, which is(as you know) often an adventure in and of itself.

There were a few times in my 38 years of nursing when the hospital I worked at sent an ambulance out to get me and a few others when the roads were closed. We had to relieve people that had been pulling doubles, were tired and needed to get home.

I remember one blizzard where the NYC buses weren't running, so I walked to the hospital.  I think I wound up working 20 hours.  Thankfully, I hitched a ride home with a friend-in her husband's police car!

I never had to get picked up by the hospital, but more than once I was one of those who worked doubles.  And, are we ALL (retired?) Nurses here??? :2thumbsup:

No, I'm a geek instead of a nurse, so I can actually do my job from home when the streets are impassable.  My sister and brother-in-law are both hospital pharmacists and my sister-in-law is a nurse, which lets me enjoy lots of health care talk vicariously.

No I'm a retired telephone employee. In 34 years I only missed 1 day of work because of snow.   I lived in a different telephone territory, so they couldn't send in a truck to pick me up.  They also couldn't count it as an unexcused  absence because my town  closed all the roads 10 minutes before I was going to leave for work.
