Emu running loose in Calvert County January 5, 2011 - 5:59pm HUNTINGTOWN, Md. - An emu is reportedly on the loose in Calvert County. The Calvert County Sheriff's Office Animal Control Unit says the bird has been spotted in the Huntingtown area. Police have been fielding calls about the bird since November, when it was spotted in Dunkirk. An emu is similar to an ostrich, standing over six feet tall and having the ability to run at speeds up to 30 mph. Police are warning against approaching the bird if spotted, as emus use their knife-like toenails and powerful legs to defend themselves. Anyone who spots the bird is asked to call Calvert County Animal Control at 410-535-1600. (Copyright 2011 by WTOP. All rights reserved.) I think they may have a bit of a nasty personality! Would be kind of hard to miss 6 footer!

This IS Southern Maryland just down the road from me and it IS Redneck Country where the bird is. (WUSA) --- The emu on the loose in Calvert County may have been shot dead this morning. Bobby Nutwell was hunting for geese on a private field by Chaneyville Road. Nutwell the bird ran toward the road. He says the bird looked like it would cause a traffic problem. "My cousin said, 'There he is, going across the field! So I said, 'ten four' I said, I'm going to him. And said I got him," he says. Nutwell remembers seeing the bird at least twice before. Calvert County Sheriff Bob Evans says there was a lost emu report from Anne Arundel County, but authorities have not identified the owner. "We can't see any violations that the man did. [It was] just a judgement call on his part. He's a legal hunter," says Evans. An emu has been on the loose in southern Maryland since November...
