A tawny owl spotted struggling for its life by walkers at a lake near Wigan has been nursed back to health. The owl, which was tangled in fishing line, was hanging by its wing and experts said it would have died if the passers by had not stepped in to save it at Worthington Lake. It is now recovering at Barn Owl Bill's Sanctuary in Leyland, Lancashire. Owner Bill Higham told the the BBC that anglers should take more care with their equipment. What is there about anglers and their lines! I know a number of fisher-folk and they would never dream of leaving things about. Yet it seems that some just could not care less, often leaving our wildlife to a dreadful fate. This wee owl, I fear, was one of the lucky ones.
