Would you believe it?!  MAK is on her way home from Arkansas by bus and what does she see around 4:15 today...a falcon flying above the Liberty Building (with twin statues) in downtown Buffalo.  She says, "Woohoo, my 1st one in 15 days! SWEET!"

Congratulations - that's a first watch report for Buffalo too.  That's a lot more than what Kathy O, Lisa, Dana and I found when we went to Buffalo on the last day of the year.  We came up empty handed at 4 locations.

Sounds like MAK saw the Statler pefa.  Glad to know a falcon's still out and about.

Actually, it was Dana, not me, that went on the last trip to Buffalo with you gals and I believe that MAK saw the Statler Pefa, not BB.  But who knows for sure.

1-19-11 - McKay Tower, U.B. South Campus - 1 Peregrine on nest box branch at ~5pm.

1-16-11 - LaSalle Park -1 Peregrine calling while hovering & swooping around chimney top of water treatment plant - nothing else around.

(LaSalle Park is on the Buffalo Harbor where Lake Erie enters the Niagara River. Plant is at Porter Ave & Amvets Dr.  This could have been a Statler falcon.)

With so many nest sites in Buffalo, they are going to need a lot of help on their Watches.  If you live in or near Buffalo, please consider helping out.  You can leave a message here or contact Sage.  Any help you can give will be greatly appreciated.  Those young fledglings can get into so much trouble on those first flights!

Carol, maybe you and Joyce and Kathy should take  your wonderful pictures and slide shows to the media in Buffalo.  Put the pictures in the Buffalo News, on their website, on the news programs.  Maybe it just needs to be publicized a bit more in Buffalo.

Hey Big Frank.  Sorry to say we were too far away in each case to get any kind of ID.  It was bitter cold, so we did most of our watching from inside a warm car.  Hopefully, when the weather gets a little warmer, we'll attempt to get ID's.

I agree with Donna.  Rochester needs more publicity too.  Who has a PR  background?   Who can taol to Marcotte at D and C?    The words needs to be spread, not only in Buffalo, but in our own city too. 

What a fun report!  Since I've visted all those spots, it was like almost being there. I am so glad you finally spotted a pefa at the grain elevators.  Yes - that is the side I saw both on last year, except they were a little farther back on building.

The only ID I can confirm is BB, the female at UB.  I saw her purple USFW band last week.

Until we return in early April, we'll be tracking eagles and ospreys in southwest florida.  :)
 
CT and UB are fairly easy, well, very easy!  Statler takes more effort having to work around those buildings.  Grand Island bridges and Niagara Gorge much more difficult, but luckily, there will be an intern for those three sites this year!   :2thumbsup:  And when you go to the grain elevators, if the two aren't right there, look on down the road on the cement elevators, just past the little harbor.  They are seen in both areas and flying over to Tifft as well.

And next time you visit Buffalo, there are two pefas along Delaware Ave between Gates Circle and North St, which desperately need spotting.  With all the trees and relatively narrow street, it's not easy to find them once the trees leaf out.  First photos of them this year get the prize!   Suggestions for where to place a nestbox will also be appreciated!  I'm thinking Millard~

Had fun all morning watching an Anhinga swimming around the lake outside our lanai, going underwater for quite a ways, surfacing, repeating.  A couple days ago I counted 18 Anhingas paddling around, going under, going the length of the lake, then they flew off.  Today also egrets and big turtles.

On Wednesday 3/16, I was in meetings from 9 to 5 (literally), followed by a company dinner.  With little time to spare, I took a detour to see the UB falcons.  For me, there is no better way to wind down, than to get a falcon fix. It made the dinner all that more pleasurable.

"BB" was on a NE ledge of the Mackay Tower - sitting and preening.  As I was getting ready to leave, I saw the tiercel on the corner of Clark Hall, which is the closest building to the Mackay Tower.  I took a few pictures, and then headed to my car.  As I approached the road, he took off, and I went back to see if he was on the tower.  He did a couple aerial displays for BB, then landed on top of the tower.  It was difficult to see him with the smoke coming from the tower.  BB moved to the nestbox perch.  In the below photo you can make out her ID -N/58.  



In one photo of the male, it looks like an all black band, but it is not absolutely clear. This would be consistent with "Yankee" from the Canadian falls side.  I suspect it is the same pair as last year.

Yesterday evening a parent sits outside the nest while the eyases huddle with one another - on the perch ...comes in to check on babies, and four cuties looking for attention.

Good News! I notified the Buffalo DEC that I am 99.9% positive "Jean" from Syracuse (2008) is the female at the Buffalo grain elevators along the lake shore. I think she has been in that area for more than a year because I once spotted a yellow band on a falcon flying around there (hoping it was Zephyr). The is no yellow band anymore, but I was able to photograph different views and piece together black /green, 98/V.

On Tuesday morning May 10th I stopped by hoping to see the new nestbox occupied.  Then I went over to the abandoned grain elevator and found a falcon sitting on the far back roof.  I was there from 6:30am to 8am taking pictures of this falcon while it remained in the same place.  I sat on a rock waiting and hoping for this bird to move its legs.  Finally, I saw the silver band and then the black/green on left leg.

It wasn't until I saw a photo posted by Sage on facebook, that prodded me to look at my photos.  I removed the memory card from my camera, and never got around to viewing my pictures.  It didn’t occur to me that I might have caught a band ID.

Downtown air battle (Statler)

When a young red-tailed hawk flew by the nest of the famous peregrine falcon pair nesting on the Statler Building, it was all-out war.

"It was like the U.S. vs. Russia," said Statler owner Mark Croce. "The peregrine just took it out."

While bigwigs below were wrapping up a news conference outside late Wednesday morning, the falcons overhead were busy driving a hawk into the ground. It smashed full-speed into the middle of Delaware Avenue and would have been struck by a car had the street not been closed to traffic at that moment.

An extraordinary set of factors -- including a construction worker who just happened to know how to handle wild birds and some emergency help from the Erie County SPCA Wildlife Center -- will allow one very luck red-tailed hawk to live to fight another day.

The scene unfolded Wednesday with top city officials, including Mayor Byron W. Brown, standing in front of the Statler to announce the removal of a sidewalk barricade as improvements to the historic building's exterior get under way.

As the news conference was wrapping up, two construction workers from the federal courthouse project across the street were hauling debris outside. One of them, Jack Malecki, turned just in time to see a hawk driven into the pavement.

Croce saw Malecki crouching in the middle of Delaware Avenue. He called over a police officer.

"It just looked like he was acting suspicious," Croce said.

By this time, Malecki had picked the hawk up and set it down on the courthouse sidewalk.

Malecki, a foreman with DeSpirt Mosaic and Marble Co., was working on the courthouse building's terrazzo stone floor. He also happens to keep a peacock and pea hens at his home near Newfane and has plenty of bird-handling experience.

He asked a friend for a shirt, covered the hawk and held it by the legs while the DEC was contacted.

Croce and the police officer questioned Malecki and were relieved to hear the injured bird wasn't one of the two Statler falcons. Croce said he was equally thrilled that Malecki had gone out of his way to save the downed hawk.

"It was such a beautiful bird," he said. "This hawk was fabulous. It was big. It was gorgeous. I'd never seen anything like it in my entire life."

Minutes later, Connie Adams, a wildlife biologist with the state Department of Environmental Conservation, had the wounded hawk in a carrier she'd brought with her and drove it to the SPCA Wildlife Center. She didn't hear any movement inside on the way up.

"I was like, 'Oh my God, it's dead,'" she said.

But when SPCA officials looked inside the carrier, the hawk was breathing.

The animal suffered from spinal shock from hitting the street, leaving it temporarily paralyzed, said Assistant Wildlife Administrator Beverly Jones. SPCA employees infused the bird with anti-inflammatory medication, gave it fluids and left it in an oxygen chamber overnight.

By Thursday morning, the bird was standing.

Jones said the hawk is a female and only about a year old -- it's missing the signature red tail feathers that the mature hawks get when they are two years old.

The SPCA probably will keep the bird another week or so to make sure it's truly fine before they attempt to release it back into the city.

"She's going to be OK," Adams said. "What that teaches you is, you don't want to be a red-tailed hawk flying near a peregrine falcon's nest."

Erie County SPCA doctor Karen Moran gives a Red Tail Hawk an examination and administers fluids and food Thursday, one day after the peregrine falcons on the Statler Building drove the red-tailed hawk from the sky and into the sidewalk in front of the Federal Courthouse building.

Getting big!

BUFFALO, NY - We will be able to check in with the chicks - the peregrine falcon chicks- today at the Central Terminal .

The DEC will be banding newly hatched chicks who reside at the Central Terminal Thursday, June 2 at 3:00 p.m.

The DEC is concluding a day of peregrine falcon census taking with the banding.

The Central TErminal Restoration Corporation in 2009 constructed and installed a nest box for the falcons. It is now home to two adult Peregrines and a number of chicks.

After the banding of the chicks, known as eases) they will report on their condition.

Ten eyasses were banded Thursday in Buffalo, five males, five females.  Four eyasses at UB were not banded because they were too big, already spending a lot of time on the flight deck and all the way over to the far side of the ledge. 

South Grand Island Bridge had 2 females and 1 male, approximately 26 days old, all healthy. 1 unhatched egg was recovered.
 
Statler had 2 males and 1 female, approximately 30 days old, all healthy. 1 male bird was named Dominic, after Mark Croce's son (as requested).  Mark Croce is the new owner of the Statler who allowed the DEC access to the 18th floor nestbox for banding.

Central Terminal had 2 males and 2 Females, approximately 20 days old, all heathy. Chicks were named with railroad themes: Phoebe Snow, a train that ran from Buffalo to NYC, Commodore after Commodore Vanderbilt who ran the NY Central RxR, Chessie after the Chesapeake RxR, and Lehigh after the old Lehigh Valley RxR.

North GI Bridge had no active nest this year.  Cement Elevator pair has discovered the box, she made a scrape immediately but they possibly had a failed nest earlier at the grain elevator so it may be a bit late for another nesting.  Niagara Gorge nest had one egg but neither bird seemed much interested in brooding it.

For our Rochester fans who may visit Buffalo, especially CT,  here are the right-leg tape colors:
Phoebe yellow
Commodore green
Chessie red
Lehigh blue

Whether it be a black bear roaming through town or deer jumping cemetery fences, enlightened residents and officials seem more willing to give wildlife a fighting chance for survival -- unless it's destroying personal property.

They banded 2 males and a female.  The new owner requested one of the males be named Dominic after his son.  ( I read this all somewhere but can't find it right now.)

Move here, MAK!   ;D  Car...yeh...our main pefa-mobile, 13 y/o,  is about to cost us $3500 in repairs this week.   :surprise:  fix it?  or diminish retirement to replace it?   ???  took it from one mechanic to another today.  inspection month. 

UB birds were still there today and we didn't see anyone at the pefa-watching station UB set up!  One year ago today, we were on hand when Harry Potter got in trouble and had to be rescued, boxed up and returned to the roof. 

Oh, Yankee was on lookout and BB took off after a vulture who made the error of entering the UB campus!

ASAP, I would think, things are getting flappy there.!

Things are pretty flappy at UB this evening. This is the best way I can get my fledgling fix.  Looks like two have fledged.  Only two left on the perches and moving on and off the ledge on either side of the nestbox. 

Pics below from this evening.  An adult must have been above them with prey, because I could see feathers falling and these two were vocalizing (can't hear them on cam), flapping, and looking up.

The one that is on the right perch stayed out there flapping most of the time.  This one doesn't quite have the balance down pat yet.  The closest one has been hopping and jumping from perch to ledge and back. I suspect that one will go first.

As dusk approached they came back into the nestbox.  One nibbled on scraps and then both were beak to beak. 

Will there be a morning fledge?

Great idea to bring MAK to help, Joyce!  Tues may work and we'll likely have two sites with 7 fledges then.  
We just found out the pefa-mobile is gone for the rest of the week and with no garage, everything from two cars is crammed into my little car.  A couple thou in car repairs this week but Roger decided to keep it and get the work done.  Monday a doctor appt and I may be getting a bunch of shots in my head.   :hurt:

I can't get on this site to post updates during the day when we're out.  Site tells me I don't exist!   :surprise:

Two pefas fledged early this morning!  One went to the roof, the other was on the opposite side of the tower, in a little niche that was fairly low.  Later in the day, both fledges had made it to the top of the tower!  One was walking along the edge and flapping, lifting off a bit. 

At the Statler, we saw just one on the perch and hope the others were inside.  We couldn't find any on the ledges.

CT - the kids are getting their dark feathers and losing the fluff which mixes in the air with the cottonwood fluffs.  Both parents were on the tower above the nest, Stash always higher.  Stella fed the kids then flew off and away.

Tuesday is the one day I won't be in Buffalo.  Twelve Rochester watchers are planning on making a trip up to Toronto for the banding of Quest's little Harlequin.

But we'll see what we can do on the weekend. I'll bet you have another fledge at UB tomorrow morning.

I love your word choice, Joyce:  "fledgling fix".  That soooo fits this year!  I find myself looking to the TS NB, and saddened.   But I am getting my "Fledgling fix"  by looking at  Rhea Mae/Tiago's nest, and I adore  Quest and Harlie's webcam.   Maybe "fledgling  fix" should be added to the rfalconcam glossary?

4 fledges at UB!  Two are across Bailey on the water tower (WT) one on a roof and the other may be o. The MacKay Tower.  Pix on FBPP.  I can get new pix on the iPad but can't get them here from iPad which is in bed with me as I feel crummy.

Great idea about a Ford pefa-mobile!  we aren't anything official though that would qualify.  Mechanic said today he has to keep the pefa-mobile til sometime next week now.  :(

UB fledges are flying around between UB campus, the VA and water tower.  One took off towards the city hopefully to circle back as there is nothing very high nearby to land on.

At CT,  Stash and Stella were perched above and next to the box and seemingly unperturbed, not sharing my uneasiness at seeing only one ledgling below the box.  None of the other kids were seen on any roofs, ledges, peaks or in the well.

This Friday night from 5-11 is that big party at CT so if anyone is able to do pefa-watching, it would be really great.  Marty said we wouldn't be charged if we were pefa-watching in the parking lot, as the party will be inside.  The parking lot will however be very active during the party and if there is a fledge incident...  :(

Plenty of other fledges to be seen around Buffalo too, UB, Statler, South Grand Island Bridge (view from Collins Marine) and Niagara Gorge (view from Terrapin Point, US side)  

I'm so nervous watching Harlie and hoping nothing inside that office scares her into a premature fledge!  Is there any plan to install a more protective box for next spring?

1) Sage, I am going to try and fledge watch on Thursday & Friday after work, and back on Saturday again, hopefully with some additional watchers again.  MAK can't make it on Saturday, Brian wants to come back.  Dan, our long-time falcon watcher (since the late 90s) is interested, and maybe some others will want to join in.

2) According to Mark Nash, the eyases have a built-in mechanism that keeps them away from the edge of the ledges until they are ready.  Upon occasion, a sibling may cause a premature fledge, but Harlie is an only child.  In the times that we have been up to Harlequin, we haven't seen any peekers out the windows.  I don't think they will scare her.  There are no plans to install a different nest box.  In Canada all of the nestsites use trays, and they have had great sucess with them.  Only their hack boxes were similar to ours.

3) My pefa-mobile is still gone for repairs too.  May not have it back until after July 4th.  I guess both of are going through withdrawal from not having a sun/moon-roof to watch falcons.  Even my fellow watchers miss it too.  

P.S. Kathy, Carol, Lisa and Dana, stopped by last night on their way home from the Toronto banding that we attended.

Thanks for the info, Joyce.  I'm afraid someone will lower the blind behind Harlie or do something to startle her.  Do Canada's pefa kids all leave the box so early?  I like our nest boxes with their flight decks, roofs and perches much better. 

Last year the CT fledglings and ledglings were easy to find and I could always find them.  Please let me know if you see them all.  Sorry about your pefa-mobile too.   :'(   Besides the car being out of commission, I've been feeling crummy and can't keep up the pace either.   :sick:  Last year we'd be out for hours making the rounds and go back out in the evening.  Can't do it this year. 

Sage - I'm so sorry you're not feeling well.

Kathy O, Lisa, Dana and I were at CT for about an hour last night on our way home from Canada.  All four eyases were still at the nest box, two inside and two below.  Definitely all four.  Stash and Stella were flying around quite a bit.  Stash did a drop and dash feeding to the two below the nest box around 7:20 pm.  

Stash and Stella were very agitated by something on the right side of the main terminal bldg.  Stooping quite low multiple times, so we walked over to investigate.  First we thought someone might have a dog, Pefas do not like dogs!  But, long story short, there were two kids up on top of the lower roofs, drinking what looked like (to me) a 3/4 filled bottle of whiskey.  

Bldg security came over and the state troopers were called in.  The kids took off.  Lisa went over and let them know what we had seen and explained that the Falcons had been bothered by these intruders.  They were very concerned and would take measures to keep them out.

It was dark by the time we got over to the Statler.  But, even in the low light, we could see what appeared to be three juvies tucked in on the building ledges near the nest box.

Then on to UB for a quick look before heading home.  It was way too dark to see anything.  All was quiet.

Oh, and Lisa spotted one on a light pole as we drove over the Grand Island Bridge.

Like Joyce said, Dan is very interested in joining us for a watch and we're hoping to get him to join us on Saturday.  We'll help as much as we can.

Thanks so much for the report, Carol!  I wonder where the little stinkers were today!  Roger posted a pic of two on the ledge this afternoon, but I can't find a way to repost the FB pix here.  We left CT this afternoon just as the thunderstorm was starting. 

My granddaughter's HS graduation is Saturday so I'm glad the Rochester watchers will be on hand to keep an eye on the kids.  At CT, it's safer to lean against the concrete posts along the perimeter!  :) :happy:

At UB, set up in a parking lot facing the VA.  The lot on the right though is VA (federal) property and you can get intercepted by officials who appear as if from thin air.   :confused: 

I swear it's the crappy pot-holed roads between UB and CT that cause our cars to break apart!

Ten eyasses were banded Thursday in Buffalo, five males, five females.  Four eyasses at UB were not banded because they were too big, already spending a lot of time on the flight deck and all the way over to the far side of the ledge. 

South Grand Island Bridge had 2 females and 1 male, approximately 26 days old, all healthy. 1 unhatched egg was recovered.
 
Statler had 2 males and 1 female, approximately 30 days old, all healthy. 1 male bird was named Dominic, after Mark Croce's son (as requested).  Mark Croce is the new owner of the Statler who allowed the DEC access to the 18th floor nestbox for banding.

Central Terminal had 2 males and 2 Females, approximately 20 days old, all heathy. Chicks were named with railroad themes: Phoebe Snow, a train that ran from Buffalo to NYC, Commodore after Commodore Vanderbilt who ran the NY Central RxR, Chessie after the Chesapeake RxR, and Lehigh after the old Lehigh Valley RxR.

For our Rochester fans who may visit Buffalo, especially CT,  here are the right-leg tape colors:

Phoebe yellow
Commodore green
Chessie red
Lehigh blue

One of the fledges was believed to be seen at the post office on William St

There is a big party at CT tonight ,so it may be a mess around the parking lot, but it seems there are plenty of potties!  My granddaughter's graduation is tomorrow but we'll try to get by.

Wow!  Very exciting day at Central Terminal!   Chessie, one of the two females,  had an accidental fledge incident.  She tried to fly but the extremely high winds caught her and sent her into a tree.  She was hung up in the branches, flapping around for over an hour while five watchers tried to locate her.  Con't HERE (http://www.facebook.com/notes/peregrine-place/chessie-and-phoebe-fledge-at-central-terminal/242407032436657)

More trouble for the CT fledglings.  I was worried this morning about the two females that had fledged yesterday, one (Chessie) having to be rescued.  When we left last night, both males were safely high up on the tower and both females were settled on the lower roofed building just left of the main tower.  I verified with Joyce that she and MAK would be there this morning and she said that yes they would.

At 12:40 pm, I received a call from Sage.  Chessie and the boys were fine, but they were concerned about Phoebe Snow (P-S).  Martie, who works at the Central Terminal, came for a visit and was told about the missing fledgling.  He immediately volunteered to go in and check on her through the windows above the roof that she was last seen on.

While I was on the phone with Sage, Martie returned.  He found P-S in what he called (I could hear him over the phone) a light well.  This well is three stories deep and about 20 feet wide.  Room for her to move around and flap, but too deep for her to get out of without help. 

I told Sage to call Jackie W from the DEC, who I had been in touch with about the rescue of Chessie yesterday. 

Hopefuly Jackie will be on site soon and P-S will be safely back under the eye of her concerned parents.

Just to get the story straight, Kathy O, Dana and I were never requested to leave the Central Terminal.  We were not there when Sage and Roger were asked to leave and never received a call from Sage about it.  She did call Joyce, who did not listen to the message until later in the day.  We finally heard about what happened that day, later that afternoon, when we received a call from Joyce.  We had seen Sage and Roger early that morning, but left them to go to the University of Buffalo.  It must have happened after that.

To make a long story short, we spent quite a long time at Central Terminal on and off all day long, from morning to night.  We actually sat and ate our lunch there while there were people going in and out of the building.  No one approached us to tell us to leave.  Many people did come over and ask us what we were watching and were very excited to hear about the Falcons.  I even had my scope out to positively ID Commodore.

Again, I just wanted to let everyone know what happened at least from our perspective.

Univ of Buffalo Falcons - 7/3/11 - Just a quick observation.  These 4 juvies and 2 adults are a joy to watch.  I so needed a Fledgling Fix after not having any to watch here in Rochester.

The talon tagging just before dark was better than any 4th of July Fireworks!  At least to us.    :mbanana:

One thing we were a little surprised by.  There is one very small male that is probably the youngest.  He is definitely getting more attention from BB (the mom).  She actually took about 15 mins to feed him while another two juvies looked on.  We've nick named him BB Jr (Baby Boy Jr).  :lol:

Not to worry about him though, he is flying and landing wonderfully.  We all gave him a 10 on his landing on the water tower when he joined his 3 siblings.  :clap:

If you live in or close to Buffalo, you should definitely get to one of the nest sites and check them out before these young ones leave the area.

Enjoy what is out there and keep your eyes wide open.  You never know what you'll see and be sure to share that excitement and observation with the people around you.  - Carol P.

Those windows downtown are hard on the little ones.  This one was Dominic, named after the Stater owner's son.  

I've seen our CT juvies follow a parent as the parent flies directly towards the building, then veers off sharply, as if to teach the kids how to safely execute that maneuver.  Heart-in-throat time watching this!

Great job...finding all 4 juvies...maybe we can do the same this weekend.  I have been there every evening this week and unable to find all 4.  Someone is bedding down away from the tower.

Dana and I decided to spend the day in Buffalo (NY) yesterday (7/23/11) to watch the juvies.  We visited both the Univ of Buffalo and Central Terminal.  We found two juvies at UB keeping in the shade.  So, we ended up spending most of our time at Central Terminal where we were happy to see all 4 juvies; Chesapeake aka Chessie, Phoebe Snow, Commodore and Lehigh (who's crop was full & bulging by the end of the evening) and both adults; Stash & Stella.  It was a warm day, but very windy up on the hill that Central Terminal is located on.  Here's a video of three of the juvies playing and soaring on the warm winds above the Central Terminal.
