Title: Backyard Cooper's Hawk
Post by: Paul Hamilton on 10-Feb-11, 09:22:24 PM
My daughter, Catherine, came home early from school today to discover this bird perched outside our window.  She described it as a "small big bird" -- not as big as a peregrine.  From the size and rounded tail, I think it is a tiercel Cooper's Hawk, the same species that was in the nearby Library of Congress a few weeks ago.  My wife, Mary, took this picture.

I love the intensity of these birds.

Love that face!  Good catch, Mary   For those of you planning to visit Washington, DC - consider coming across the river to Arlington.  As you can see, lots of hawks, couple of bald eagles, and I saw my first PeFa on the I-395 side of the Pentagon.

a special cross-eyed intensity, in this case.
I've had a coopers hawk across from my window all winter, and have had a couple of close encounters with him. amazing critters. Thanks, all three of you. Four, counting Lil' Strabismus there.
