Title: Help w/ Raptor ID
Post by: brobeta on 22-Feb-11, 11:08:42 PM
Weekend before last I was in Toledo for daughter's volleyball tournament.  We pulled into a McDonald's for a quick rest stop when I noticed a large Raptor flying low across the parking lot.  It flew into a small adjoining woods and perched high up in the largest tree on the far edge about 100 yards away.  The first impression I had of this bird was its size - about the size of a Red Tail, but slimmer and with a long tail and short wings of an accipiter.    The girls went in to the restaurant and I grabbed my binoculars.  The bird was perched facing me and I noticed a dark head - it appeared uniformly black and a uniformly light colored breast with only a single bar crossing its breast at the level of the shoulders.  I couldn't see any other distinguishing marks except the long tail.  I figured this is a Goshawk (my first) and probably a juvenile which woudl explain the inconsistent breast.  It was a handsome bird.  I was pretty excited - the girls cared less!  Can you help with this ID?
