Sad news this morning from this site.  They had two hatches this year and last night a bad storm with 100km/hr winds may have blown both the babies out of the nest as it's empty this morning and they were still white fluffies so no way they could fly.  Chicks missing at Woodman as well although some are being heard, if not seen on cam so a few may have survived the storms.

Lincoln is reporting that maintenance workers found the bodies of the two babies this morning.  :(

Good news from Woodman though, they are reporting all 4 chicks survived the storm.  I guess there is an area behind the box they can get to hence the empty nest boxes this morning.

I read about Woodman on FB...great news but so sad about the lost babies. Fly free, little ones.  :sorrow:

One of the 2012 juvies from the Lincoln nest has shown up in Texas. That year there were two chicks, both male. After banding, they were named Lewis and Clark in a "name the chicks" contest.

Lewis (10/R) has travelled a long way from Lincoln, Nebraska to The Woodlands, Texas -- about 849 miles. I wonder if he is spending the winter there. His parents, Alley and 19/K, do not migrate, so I find it a little surprising that Lewis has gone so far south.

Lewis is a very handsome tiercel. I think he looks like his Dad, with his solid dark hood:

Didn't I read that 19K was looking around recently at another nest somewhere?  Must be he decided to go back home.

It is a small nest, and I think it is very unsafe. It is very windy up there, and there is not enough protection for eggs or chicks.

You probably remember that the chicks were swept out of the nest in a storm last year. And way back in 2008, all three chicks were also lost from this nest in wet weather.

I wish that they would replace this unsuitable nest box with a strong, well built nest box with sides, a roof, and the bottom part of the front closed in. I think it could be the difference between chicks who survive and chicks who don't survive.

Just my opinion.

Yes, 19/K went to the Woodmen nest in Omaha in February, which belongs to his son Mintaka. On March 7 they battled for the nest, and Mintaka won. 19/K returned to his mate and his nest in Lincoln.

In December of 2014, Lewis, born at the Lincoln nest in 2012, was sighted in The Woodlands, Texas.

In December of 2015, Lewis was identified once again in Texas, at the same building in Houston where he had been seen a year ago. He must really like that area.

There were two chicks born in Lincoln in 2012; Lewis and his brother Clark. Clark, too, is alive and well. He has his own nest and mate at a Nebraska power plant; he and his mate raised chicks in 2015.

Alley (banded black/black A/*Y), and her mate 19/K have their first egg, laid on April 1. Hoping for a second egg later today.

Alley and 19/K incubated five eggs this year. However, only one of the eggs hatched, on May 16.

On June 6, 19/K was found on the ground, unable to fly. He was rescued by Lincoln Animal Control and taken to Fontenelle Forest Raptor Recovery, where X-rays showed that he had a dislocated elbow.

The following day, the lone chick was banded and found to be a male.

(http://i1195.photobucket.com/albums/aa393/falcoperegrinus1/July%202016/dinan-at-banding-1a_zps433cdzzw.jpg) (http://s1195.photobucket.com/user/falcoperegrinus1/media/July%202016/dinan-at-banding-1a_zps433cdzzw.jpg.html)

After a naming contest was held, he was named Dinan to honor John J. Dinan, former Nongame Bird Program Manager at the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission, who initiated the Peregrine Falcon projects at the Nebraska Capitol and WoodmenLife Tower.

Left on her own to care for Dinan, Alley did an outstanding job of raising her only chick. She taught him all the flight skills and life skills that he will need as an independent peregrine, flying with him for countless hours each day.

Dinan spent the night of August 20-21 on a ledge below the nest box. This is the last time he was seen in the area around the Capitol. I think that he moved farther afield to begin life on his own.

Alley remains at the nest site, and 19/K, aka Papa, is still in care at Fontenelle Forest Raptor Recovery. However, he has been making steady progress.

The most recent update on 19/K from Fontenelle Forest Raptor Recovery, two days ago:

Great news about the recovery of 19/K, the Lincoln capital building peregrine falcon that was injured earlier this year!

19/K has been moved to our largest flight pen and is doing very well! Watch as Betsy Finch, Manager of Raptor Rehabilitation, checks in on his progress as he flies from one end of the pen to the other.

19/K is one of the peregrine falcons that lives at the state capital building in Lincoln. He was found on the ground with a dislocated elbow earlier this year. The injury was repaired and he has been recovering at our rehabilitation center. Barring any setbacks, our Raptor Recovery staff is hopeful that he will be released in the near future.

A peregrine showed up on the sky cam at Channel 10 news in Lincoln on September 22. The bird appears to be unbanded.

I don't know whether she (?) is looking for a home, or is just passing through. Not the best time for a new bird in town, with Papa still in care and Alley on her own in Lincoln.

A couple of days ago an unknown peregrine was in the vicinity of the nest box while Alley was on top of the box. Was this the Channel 10 bird? Dinan? Someone else?

Too far away, and too unclear, to be able to tell.

There is an article today in the Lincoln Journal Star (which I cannot access without a subscription). The few words I could see stated that Papa (19/K) could be released as early as Monday.

One of the state Capitol's longtime resident falcons has recovered from a dislocated elbow and could return to his nest as soon as Monday.

Nothing about this on the Fontenelle Forest Raptor Recovery Site so far.

Thanks for the link, Kris!

After almost four months in rehab, the date and time have now been set for Papa's release. From Fontenelle Forest Raptor Recovery today:

Great news. 19/K will be released at the state capitol building on Monday at 10:30 a.m.!

Can't wait to see him back home with Alley! I hope everything goes well for both of them from now on.

19/K in care,  back on June 20; a very handsome tiercel.
